    Let's Talk About Cankles

Vintage ads are always good for a laugh.Vintage ads are always good for a laugh. You know the term "cankles," right? They're described as "chubby ankles" or calves that stretch down to the ankle region without much definition. One major nationwide gym is waging war on cankles, and here's why it kind of bugs me...

Gold's Gym has designated July as "Cankle Awareness Month." According to their Web site: "The word comes from the combination of 'calf' and 'ankle.' It occurs when the calf merges with an obese or swollen ankle."

Gold's claims that cankles are the "fastest growing aesthetic affliction in the United States"--even more than muffin tops and saddle bags. "Millions of people across the country are currently affected by cankles and millions more are at risk," they write on their "Say No to Cankles" Web site. "In fact, it is estimated that if current trends continue, by the year 2012 Cankles will surpass Love Handles as the number one aesthetic affliction in the world."

Guess the country where men prefer size-14 women...

A clever marketing ploy? Yes. But let's be real here: There is no real scientific evidence that cankles will take over the world by 2012. I agree that anything to help fight obesity is a great thing. But here's the rub: What about people who are pretty much fit, yet still have cankles, or just ankles that are a tad bit "thick"? I know a woman who is as fit as they come--runs five miles a day, has toned arms and great abs--and yet her ankles are a little on the thick side. That's just the way her legs look, and no amount of exercise is going to change that.

So here's my question: Is this campaign a bit too harsh, especially when you consider that some people simply can't change the shape of their ankles?

When to call it quits: Is it time to declare a truce with your body?

cankles really don't have anything to do with weight, or at least not in the people who i've seen. i'm obese and my ankles are really quite thin for my weight, and probably normal size (or close to it) if i was a healthy weight. it's like saying that all fat women have huge boobs. definitely not so, otherwise we wouldn't have the term "flatso" (a flat chested women who is fat).

i agree with rowdygirl. they should have a campaign to "fix" men!

It's true some people naturally have thicker ankles even if they are fit all around.
I have toned athletic legs, but definitely not skinny, but on the other hand, my ankles are small and pretty! haha~

I think it's funny and you guys need to chill out. Bottom line - cankles are not attractive. But if you are happy with unattractive ankles - so be it.

I have the worst set of cankles known to man, they are abnormally large, and unflattering,.... but you know what? who gives a damn.
they are mine, they are a sad result of genetics, and im not going to gripe and moan about something i cant controll. i love me, and piss on golds for even assuming that people have control over something as miniscule as cankles.
can we feed the hungry please? instead of investing our well earned money to some complex giving, meat-head organized, health organization. its sad really.

this is ridiculous really and a terrible marketing ploy that is playing off of the delicate mindframe and insecurities of our current society. cankles are not caused by being overweight....i know many people who are obese, and guess what, none of them have cankles....even had a close friend over 450lbs, guess what, normal ankles...so gold's gym needs to rethink the claims they are making before someone is offended enough to take action....thank you...*stepping down off soapbox now*

This is just mean! Not a lot can be done if you have them. I have great ankles but my friend does not. She is a fitness fanatic and I'm not at all. This is a bunch of crap!

"How the writer can postulate that the Gold's "Awareness Month" is a clever marketing ploy, and then go on to soberly assure us that no scientific evidence exists that lends any credence to their claim... Christ, is this supposed to be humorous? Gag me with a Smurf."

      Great post.

Here's your Jokey Smurf present box. LOL.

I have seen overweight women with skinny ankles, and I have seen skinny girls with fat ankles. This is absolutely ridiculous!! Gold's Gym is just trying another shameless money making ploy to get more business. Women have enough crap to worry about, now we have to worry about something that most of us can't do anything about? Thanks a lot Gold's Gym....now I know I will NOT be stepping foot in any of your gyms, as my ankles are certainly too fat to merit any worth. All women need to boycott this institution until they understand that making money should not involve making women feel worse about themselves.

rowdygirl... I like the way you think.

I had a membership to Gold's Gym. Never again, that's for sure.

You all are losing sight of the main thing here, it's a business. Golds wants to advertise new paranoia for woman to bring them in. It's all about making money. In reality they don't give a flip about your cankles or anything else.

What I would find far more useful is a successful way to rid myself of my occassional summer cankle issue. It gets hot and humid....they swell. Really ticks me off. I can't drink any more water. I'll drown. I excercise every day. It's just every summer....ew ick! Makes me crazy.

I have had cankles my whole life...even when I was a size 2 in college. I have my dad's legs and that means no difference between my ankle and calf. It sucks because I hate wearing flat sandels and I cannot wear anklets (they just break). However, I have yet to find a surgery that could move my muscle in my ankle so they wouldn't be so big. It isn't a huge deal to me. Only every once in awhile do I think about it...but if I could fix it, I would.

I have cankles. I am a petite woman and have always worn size small in tops and size 0-3 in jeans. I always hated my ankles because I couldn't wear anklets when I was younger, which was in at the time. I am not overweight nor have I ever been overweight. My ankles are the same size, just about, as my calves. I would require surgery to file down my bones or remove ligaments to make my ankles smaller. All in all I like my ankles because I can wear heels and not worry about twisting my ankle.

I agree - Gold's is going too far. You can't change the shape of your ankles. Mine stayed the same even while I was pregnant with twins. I have done nothing to earn the shapely ankles I have - I'm a few pounds overweight and work out only sporadically. I just consider them a genetic gift because they look just like my mother's!
