Little ways to lose big pounds

    Getty ImagesGetty ImagesBy Jessica Girdwain

It's a familiar story: You pledge to honor a daily elliptical routine and count every last calorie. But soon, you're eating cupcakes at the office and grabbing happy hour mojitos, thinking, Oops, diet over.

There is a better way: Swap the all-or-nothing approach for one or two healthy switch-ups in your daily routine. "Doing this can lead to more weight loss than you ever imagined," says Marissa Lippert, R.D., author of The Cheater's Diet.

In fact, we talked to readers who knocked off 10, 25, even 60 pounds with some easy tweaks. Borrow their slim-down secrets to transform your body the real-world way.

    Swap your go-to order
"I used to eat out at restaurants up to nine times a week! By cutting back to just once a week and ordering a grilled chicken salad instead of a large bowl of pasta, I've lost 20 pounds in one month." -Kerri Butler, Joplin, MO

    Health.com: 25 ways to cut 500 calories a day

    Skip the salty aisle
"I reached my goal weight after I stopped routinely buying snacks at the grocery store. If I wanted a bag of chips or a candy bar, I had to walk to the store to get it. That inconvenience usually made me ignore my cravings." -Heather Del Baso, Worcester, MA

    Run your butt off
"When I wanted to fit into my skinny jeans again, I started running 20 minutes a day during my lunch hour. In two months, I've lost 20 pounds, have tons of energy, and just finished my first 5K. Those jeans? They're too big now!" -Lauren Castor, Anniston, AL

    Pile on the veggies
"By adding vegetables to the foods I love-like eating pizza topped with arugula and green peppers instead of pepperoni-I became so full so quickly that I no longer had room to eat things like chips or super-rich desserts. I said good-bye to four dress sizes!" -Janessa Mondestin, New York City, NY

Health.com: Best superfoods for weight loss

    Brave a new class
"Two months ago, I started going to Zumba twice a week. The crazy dance routines really tone your muscles-especially legs and abs-and give you a heart-pounding cardio workout. Eleven pounds later, I've almost reached my goal weight." -Morgan Howe, Rochester, NY

    Nix nighttime eating
"Each time I needed to lose the baby weight, I stopped eating after 6:30 p.m. five nights a week. The other two evenings were reserved for nights out. Most of what I'd eat at night was junk food anyway, so it took only two months to get my pre-baby body back." -Deborah Gilboa, Pittsburgh, PA

    Have a 300-calorie breakfast
"I used to skip breakfast, but now I never go without. I always eat about 300 calories of a healthy mix of protein and whole grains. My go-to meal: a sandwich with natural peanut butter and apple butter. It keeps my hunger down so I snack less throughout the day. In a little over a year, I've shed 65 pounds." -Bo Hale, Tulsa, OK

    Health.com: 7 breakfasts under 300 calories

    Save room for your dessert
"I budget for the treats I love. By eating healthy snacks like carrots and hummus, I have calories to splurge on a piece of chocolate and glass of wine each night. And I've still managed to lose 20 pounds in three months." -Elaine Higginbotham, Fort Worth, TX

    Get fired up
"I loaded my iPod with jams that make me look forward to going to the gym. They energize me, allowing me to pick up speed on the elliptical-and because I want to hear my entire playlist, my workouts are longer now. Two months later, I'm down 13 pounds and have killer legs." -Kara Marshall, York, ME

    Kick the habit
"I quit smoking, and right away joined a gym and started working out with a personal trainer. There was no way I could exercise and feel healthy if I kept lighting up. I've already dropped 37 pounds in three months!" -Leila Fathi, Memphis, TN

Health.com: Kick the habit without gaining a pound

    Do a purge
"I totally cleaned out my pantry. Once I replaced the foods I used to overindulge in, like ice cream, with lower-cal snacks, such as roasted sunflower seeds or Special K Chocolatey Delight cereal, I began making better choices automatically. Now, I'm slimmer than I was before I had my two kids!" -Lori Feldman, Coconut Creek, FL

    Get fit in five
"I try to fit in small bouts of exercise whenever possible, like doing jumping jacks or crunches during television commercials or dancing while washing dishes. This burns extra calories and keeps me from mindlessly munching in front of the TV. Now my clothes fit way better, and I'm more toned than ever." -Megan Tiscareno, Hammond, IN

    Don't supersize it
"When going out for fast food, I used to get the large-size value meal. Now, I satisfy a craving by ordering just one item: a small order of fries or a six-piece box of chicken nuggets. So far, I've shaved off 16 pounds in seven weeks, and I'm on track to being thinner than my high school self for my 10-year reunion later this year." -Miranda Jarrell, Birmingham, AL

Health.com: America's healthiest fast food restaurants

    Downward dog it
"Yoga has become the best thing for my relationship with food and my body. From practicing it several times a week, I'm now more in touch with my hunger cues-so I eat intuitively and stop when I'm full. I've gone down a jeans size, and my cellulite has disappeared!" -Jessica Nicklos, Morgantown, WV

    Healthy up your happy hour
"After work, my colleagues and I always grabbed dinner-and it was usually deep-fried. Then we changed things up. Instead of nights out, we started walking and running around a local track. A year later, I'm down 40 pounds." -Ellen Setzer, Cleveland, OH

    Walk with spot
"My dog and I go for a walk every day, even if it's for just 10 minutes around the block. When the weather is horrible, her enthusiasm gives me the incentive to get out when I wouldn't dare lace up my sneakers otherwise. All the walking adds up: I've lost more than 50 pounds this past year." -Jamie Altholz, Denver, CO

TO "Scarlet AND Happy go lucky".. You must eat!!! If you do not feed your body enough, it will hold onto everything you give it, and not let loose... If you do not eat throughout the day, you will eat too much when you finally do... It doesn't take much to keep your metabolism up, a little peanut butter, yogurt, baby carrots, an apple, hummas, cheese, some sliced meat, cooked shrimp (I keep frozen around when it is on sale), tuna fish, boiled eggs.. Try keeping a diary of how many calories you eat... EVERYTHING COUNTS!!! Remember to eat within the first hour of waking.. and eat small snacks throughout the day... I eat about every 3 hrs... You need to figure out how many calories you are able to eat in a day, and not go over it... EXCEPT allow for 1 splurge day... I read somewhere to multiply your weight by 12, and that is the total amount of calories to maintain your weight.. You can also try lowering your carbs and see if you can kick it into action...

When you workout, do different stuff.. Doing the same workout will not get you anywhere... Try doing Interval exercises, bursts of high speed movement for as long as you can, and then slow down the pace half way to allow your heart rate to decrease, then do it again.. Do as many times as possible... Do with and without weights.. If you are walking try doing walking lunges, walking squats, jumping, jumping jacks in between walking, power walking, do marching walks (knees high and arms moving).. REMEMBER... When you are working out, try to work as many muscles as possible,, so include your arms, and suck in your gut, try crunching while you walk.. Tuning into your body will help you recognize if you are making your muscles work.. put your hands on your abs and see if you feel them working, if not, adjust your movements.. At work I do what I call walking with purpose... Walk like you are in a hurry to get everywhere you are going, it will kick your heart rate up a little every time... If you work in a multi floor building, on your lunch hour, take the elevator to the ground floor and then walk or run up the stairs.. Do this several times on your lunch hour, and if you have a break do one then also... Bring a sandwich, and do a lunch workout, even if it is only walking outside, or running the stairs in your building.. Then do a workout later in the evening..

      Happy go lucky-
If you don't eat ENOUGH calories a day, you will not lose weight, because your body will go into starvation mode! Also, there are some health issues that can cause weight gain. If you think you are doing everything right, but still not losing, or even gaining more, you should see a doctor. You could have an issue with your thyroid.

I've lost the same five pounds about ten times. To keep it off I will need discipline which is hard for me . Since I have beared my testimony on this I am going to do it this time so that I don't shame myself.

TOO FUNNY EDANDSUE! LOL! I've battled my weight all my life. Had gastric bypass several years ago which changed my life forever for the better. However, developing a chronic illness requiring a variety of meds really has made things a bit difficult again. For what it's worth... Jim, not all of us have these deep underlying issues that make us eat. We just like food and don't always exercise. A few things I know for sure... you do need to switch up your exercise routine. You do need to make sure you are eating enough and..... It really can make a difference if you stop drinking sodas, diet or regular, and drink water, gatorade, diluted juices, lowfat milk or almond milk, etc. instead. Diet sodas always used to stimulate my appetite and now there's research all over saying they can stimulate insulin (thus fat storage) more than regular sugar.

aaiillbbhhee.....You're right, all of us DON'T want to lose weight. But for those that DO, this is a good, informative article. I read articles, whether I plan to take their advice or not, just because I find them interesting, and sometimes find good tips!

It's an article of many, if you're not interested in it, than don't bother, simple. You don't even have to take all the different examples to heart, just those that pertain to you. Like I love to walk my dog. Haven't lost weight doing so though.

For happy go lucky: 1. get your thyroid checked-even if it's "normal"-are you losing hair, losing eyebrows? that's thyroid 2. give up wheat and dairy for a month and see if that helps 3. be sure you're eating enough! My dr. said I don't eat enough!! that actually helps (more protein, not more grains) 4. try Agve nectar instead of honey-it's lower glycemic index--or even better, use Stevia, esp. in drinks
Don't give up-you are worth fighting for.

This is the dumbest article I have ever read on Yahoo! How could anyone lose 20lbs in 2 months by eating veggies on their pizza? Of course all of these ideas are good, but those weight loss statistics are just absurd.

To happygolucky, I have the same problem. I go to the gym 5 days a week and do 30-40 min cardio and do the circuit three times a week. I lost 9 lbs. to begin and I haven't lost an ounce since. I hear age has something to do with it and being menopausal. I eat healthy, don't eat fast or junk food and I'm still struggling. I just keep exercising because it feels good and my legs and arms are really toned. The abs are still a problem. Since I am 64, I'm not going to obsess about the weight. Good Luck, hope you find something to jar those lbs off.

Calories have little to do with actual weight....look up calorie and read the definition...if you really want to cut obesity..take the computer games away....or hook your computer or game to an exercise bike so that it will not turn on unless you are peddling. In fact hook up a generator so that when you pedal you power the computer. So if you want to read an email you have to pedal slow..want to look at porn pedal a little faster....that would also be good for a couch potato like me...and no more naps during those old movies....or golf games..

What ever your motivation is...your body thinks it's just doing what it's doing. If you do the same things every day, it's not *excercise* it's just what you do; you have to switch things up a bit and make your body behave. For instance, I grew up always thinking cardio before weight training, and now as it turns out it's the opposite. According to a trainer at my gym, you will have more energy for your muscles working them out first, and then when your basic energy is used, anything you do in the cardio area will take energy from stored fat. I switched, and saw immeadiate results. Not to preach or anything, but honey is still sugar, and olive oil is still fat; yes they are healthier than white refined sugar and butter, but the fact remains...if you use less energy than you eat, it will always be stored as fat. Good luck to you!

      Hi Happy Go Lucky,
Congrats on all the hard work but you are misunderstanding "eating healthy" and "eating to lose weight."
You are not supposed to substitute sweets for other sweets. For example, do not substitute honey for sugar. Honey still has a lot of calories. Losing weight is like boot-camp. You can't substitute honey for sugar. And people think smoothies are healthy but again, they are full of calories. Only drink a smoothie if you want to cheat a little on your diet. Avoid juices all together because you are loading up your body with calories. Don't add olive oil to your salads because it has a lot of calories. People call olive oil healthy because it is an unsaturated fat but again, it still has a lot of calories.
It seems to me that you are eating healthy, but your goal is to also lose weight. You should start counting calories. The low-fat cereal you say you eat still has a lot of calories and carbs. Do not be fooled when a food says "low-fat" on it because low-fat does not mean low-calorie. Do not eat cereal, olive oil, wine, juice. If you are worried about getting enough vitamins per day, just eat a mulit-vitamin pill. Just eat chicken, fish, vegitables, and even limit your fruits. Fruits may be healthy but they are full of calories.
So to sum up, you need to consume less calories. You should eat around 1200 calories and exercise 1 hr a day. Boot-camp! Reply to me if you need help or have questions, I'm happy to help
      Good luck, happy go lucky!

I just burned some calories laughing at that statement. Talk about lazy.

I don't eat after 5 pm. I hardly ever drink soda anymore. If I have a candy bar, I make sure it won't take me over my calorie count. I only buy ice cream sandwiches, or those small cups they have now. I can have pop tarts for breakfast. I also have started making my own lunches for work. I will only allow myself to buy lunch once a week.

I'm surprised they didn't list soft drinks. I used to drink up to 4 cokes a day at the office...for the math, that's 600 calories a day being packed on. I switched to just plain water and non-sweet tea and started losing weight almost instantly. I didn't even have to change the food i was eating.
