ELLE weighs in on the most popular celebrity slim-down programs on the market
Once dismissed as just another diet fad, the celebrity-inspired cleanse may just be here to stay as health nuts (and wannabes) are increasingly turning to detoxifying plans and potions to rid their bodies of caffeine, alcohol, and all the other processed preservatives that populate our daily lives. From the numbered juice bottles of the Blueprint cleanse and the cucumber soup in Organic Avenue to the vitamin-packed pink lemonade that made David Kirsch a wellness guru to the stars, we bring you a breakdown of five standout plans in the cleanse community. Read on for the risks and rewards of each detoxifier as well as which celebrities like them.
The go-to for customized cleanses, Blueprint delivers a daily supply of six conveniently numbered juices, allowing clients to select varying levels of intensity ("just juice" or "juice 'til dinner") and promising "not to sneak in anything too grassy." "It's not about deprivation," says co-founder Erica Huss. "You're getting really sound calories." Sarah Jessica Parker, Olivia Wilde, and Gossip Girl's Jessica Szohr seem to agree: They've been known to sip Blueprint juices like pineapple apple mint the week before awards shows.Blueprint cleanse2. ORGANIC AVENUE
It's a Hollywood favorite: Gwyneth Paltrow (who calls it "delicious"), Alicia Silverstone, Naomi Watts, and her husband, Liev Schreiber, have all reportedly gone the Organic Avenue route, following variations on the signature five-day LOVE (Live. Organic. Vegan. Experience.) cleanse.
Founder Denise Mari shakes up the traditional juice cleanse by adding cucumber soups and sunflower salads, and deliveries come in earth-friendly reusable glass bottles. Manhattanites like Organic Avenue so much that the company opened an outpost in the Hamptons for the summer. "They understand that not all juicing is created equal," says trainer-to-the-stars Tracy Anderson.
3. JILL PETTIJOHN
Jill Pettijohn, a New Zealand native and longtime vegetarian, helped pioneer the cleanse craze as a personal chef for Donna Karan, Nicole Kidman, and Drew Barrymore. "I believe I was the original home-delivery cleanse person in New York City," she says. Her expertise in the kitchen informs her eponymous 100-percent organic program, as she switches up her menu daily: "When they open up the bag, it's always something different."
4. DAVID KIRSCH 48-HOUR SUPER-CHARGED CLEANSE
Embraced by Kirsch's friend and client Anne Hathaway for red carpet slim-downs the two-day regimen is strictly liquid. Translation: no solid eats and no shortcuts. Kirsch says the new pink-lemonade formula is "comprehensive," cleansing kidneys with cranberry extract and detoxifying the liver with milk thistle. He also offers a Flush and Cleanse plan, in which supplements and green tea expel toxins from the body.David Kirsch
5. THE CLEAN PROGRAM
"There is actual food involved" in the 21-day Clean Program boasts CEO Dhrumil Purohit. Created by cardiologist Alejandro Junger, MD, who outlines the program in his book Clean, the plan calls for brown rice-protein powder shakes for breakfast and dinner and sandwiching a healthful meal of "clean" protein (think stir-fried chicken and veggies) at lunch. The food-and-shake hybrid has found fans in cleanse aficionado Paltrow as well as Mariska Hargitay and Debra Messing.Clean Program
