Men Are Living Almost as Long as Women

Ever since 1928, when the discovery of penicillin virtually wiped out maternal deaths due to "childbed fever," women have been living longer than men. But that is changing. As short a time ago as 2003, the life expectancy gap was five years. Yet according to a 2011 study from the University of Wisconsin's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, that figure has shrunk to just over two years. A man who is 65 today may well live to the impressive age of 82.3. For a woman of the same age, that number squeaks up to 84.9.

So the guys are catching up to us. This trend is partly due to the advent of Lipitor, bypass surgery, and other medical advances that are helping to keep men from dying early of heart attacks. Yet even as their lifespans are getting longer, ours are not keeping up at our historic pace. Researchers say this is because women are so stressed out these days that they're resorting to unhealthy habits such as skimping on sleep, grabbing fast food, and relying on meds, alcohol, and cigarettes to cope. Ouch! Here's hoping we can learn to mend our ways and stop literally killing ourselves slowly.

Yet even if we do, the fact will remain that the boys are living longer than they once did. Economists, relationship gurus, and other experts are busy batting around theories about what this might mean for our collective future. Still, Susan Jacoby, author of "Never Say Die: The Myth and Marketing of Old Age," sounded a realistic note among the clamor when she pointed out in a recent "New York Times" article that "The skies will not be 'raining men' in old age, particularly among the 'old old' over 85."

True, but there will indeed be more older men than ever before. Will the uptick mean fewer widows along with a bigger playing field of potential matches for women who do become suddenly single? Will the possible increase in the numbers of anniversaries married couples celebrate be a boon or a bane? On the one hand, people may get to grow old together and discover that, in the poet Browning's words, "the best is yet to be." On the other hand, one spouse or the other could end up as a caregiver when he or she is barely able to manage the responsibility. And how about spouses trapped in bad marriages? Studies show that marital strife is detrimental to physical and mental health even in the short run, let alone for an extended sentence. As for the economy, will the relative boom in senior men be a drain on Social Security or will the aging males remain robust enough to keep earning and contributing?

Another reason why men are living longer is the busted myth that married men live longer. Some men are finding that life is a lot less stressful livimg wthout a woman. That doesn't imply that men are more into livimg with other men. On the ontrary we still like women. We still choose to date women but we want peace and quite at home. You don't get peace and quite at home living with some women, especially American women who tend to be bossy and controlling. Maybe that's also why there is an increase of marriage with women from other cultures? That's another story. Anyway, the bottom line is this, life is a lot less stressful which leads to a longer life span for men who choose peace and quite at home versus living with an American women. Oh by the way, second and third generation of foreign women have beome "americanize,' as such they are just as distressful to live with as living with an American woman. Sorry women, you did it to yourselves.

It's striking that the idea of men living longer can even be considered "bad news". "Women Still Living Longer -- Good Or Bad News" -- doubt that you'd ever see that in print.

I think the real reason men are living longer is they no longer allow women to get to them. There is more football on TV. The invention of wireless headphones have helped greatly, as well.

surprise, surprise? we KNOW stress kills and it's showing up more and more in women as they adopt the more traditional male working habits. all the study had to ask the men. as men/women roles have/are changing, why shouldn't each gender expect there to be problems. oh, that's right. it wasn't listed as a side effect on the modern american lifestyle label.

Good statistic but as many of the comments indicate the reasons for the longevity may not be what the writers of the article purported. I firmly believe that it is widespread use of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. SPAWN 'TIL YOU DIE.

I always said that women were like black widow spiders they suck the life out of a good man then move on to the next one.now that men are getting married later in life or divoricing quickly or just staying single they are living longer.its about time we men wised up!
p.s. I still do believe that a good woman will help you live longer its just that they are just so damn hard to find because there are so few.In that regard I believe its because they want to be equal to men in every way and this takes away from what makes them a woman.what man wants to marry a woman who has lost her female characteristics, its like marrying another guy.

How the hell would they know?!! Since when has this society been concerned about the health of "men"? Especially enough to do a study? LOL!! Men still live shorter lives and who does the government have a whole department of health for?? Phuking women! And Yahoo is about as sexist against "MEN" as they come. I can't remember when I've read a good article concerning men, their lives, their education, their exercise. It's no wonder I've distanced myself from the opposite sex, no one like to be around someone who's considered perfect and is treated as such!

I found the attitude toward men that is displayed in this article DISGUSTING. And I am a woman. But I guess I am in a minority these days because I ADORE MEN. And I want men to live as long and as well as they can. Maybe my husband is as lucky as he says he is.

WRONG.....Women are dying sooner because appox. 30/40 years ago they went to work.

They say hard work won't hurt you. WRONG, it will kill you early.

All these comments about divorced men or single men living longer... not true. Married men live longer than divorced or single men. But as Johnny Carson put it "they are more willing to die."

I am not sure if living longer is always a good thing. Sometimes old people do not have a high quality of life, they can't care for themselves, can't do much and are literally sitting around waiting to die. Not all old people, but enough so that living longer is not always that great. I have an 82 year old Uncle, never married, no kids. He has trouble walking and spends most of his day watching TV. The way he sees it, he has no reason to keep on living, he says to die would be a nice rest. I think for some old people, the joys of life no longer really exist, and they literally get tired of living and want a break from the aches and pains of old age. Plus at old age, they have watched a lot of people die and they get lonely.

WORKING FOR A LIVING is killing women. Housewives have lots of natural exercise in their daily routines and very low stress levels, other than the social isolation of being cooped up in the home. Housewives have the labor of love and the rewards of child rearing. Getting to hear "I love you mommy" and a big hug. An office worker sits at a desk for eight hours per day, which is bad for your health, and has to deal with stress of nasty coworkers trying to undermine them and insecure bosses constantly harping at them and finding fault with them. Work in the business world has no intrinsic rewards; it leaves ones soul feeling empty. In other words, its thankless work for a paper paycheck that cannot give love or hugs.

Women have been saying for years they wanted the same status as men. I don't mind a bit but the ladies mind. It's amazing how they are one of the guys on payday but want exceptions on the other days. Now it is becoming clear (except to this author) that technological advances in health and medicine are aiding men to live longer, while women aren't getting the same benefits due to the increased stress of being the bread winner. Women now have the same rate of cardiovascular disease as men and are catching up in cancer and industrial/ work related categories. The grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.

It's a brave, new world out there where women are slowly loosing their place of preferential treatment in so many ways. No more seats given to them ( younger women will take the seat but look at men with contempt if they offer), no more automatically getting the kids and child support when divorced, life insurance imbalance is becoming balanced. In short, It's not as good to be a man as many women think.

By the same token, men are becoming demasculated in so many ways, and though they don't like it any better than the women like manhood, are reaping the benefits. Like I said, it's a brave new world.

Feminist have destroyed this country from the roots.
    • .  •  8 months ago
You women had it good, you got to stay at home and raise your children. You did NOT have to deal with the rat race or the stress of work. You did not want to listen to your husbands who would give their lives for you, so now you have to listen to your boss who could care less if you lived or died. Now its time for men to reap the benifits of your feminist agenda. You women blew it bigtime, I hope your all happy now. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
