Natural Oral Hygiene Tips

Afraid to smile because of the stains on your teeth? There are a number of natural ways to whiten your teeth, prevent stains, and freshen your breath while you're at it.

Unfortunately, many of our antioxidant-rich foods stain the teeth; think RED WINE, black tea, grape and cranberry juice, etc. And since we're all consuming lots of antioxidant-rich foods these days, most of us could use a little whitening in the tooth department.

Foods that contain malic acid, like strawberries and grapes, offer a natural astringent for helping clean teeth. When combined with baking soda, you essentially have a natural tooth cleanser. Try these handy at-home recipes for whitening teeth, natural toothpaste and DIY mouthwash!

For Stains/Whitening:
Mash one strawberry into a pulp; add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and mix well. Apply the mixture to your teeth with a soft toothbrush and let it sit for 5 minutes. Rinse by brushing your teeth as you regularly do (with a natural toothpaste). This is good for once/week use.

Natural Toothpaste:

• 2/3 cup baking soda
• 4 tsp fine sea salt (consider it an exfoliant for your teeth)
• a few grapes
• 1 - 2 tsp peppermint extract according to taste (or add your favorite flavor - spearmint, cinnamon, orange, etc.)
• water (add to desired consistency)

Mouth Wash: Rosemary Mint
Boil 2.5 cups of water. Add in 1 teaspoon of fresh mint leaves, 1 teaspoon of rosemary leaves, add 1 teaspoon of anise seeds. Let this boil for about 20 minutes. Once it is cooled, you've got your mouthwash!
