What would it take to make a smoker quit?-
Today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released nine new anti-smoking images that will be required to appear on every package or carton of cigarettes sold, as well as on all cigarette advertisements, by September 2012.
The scary-looking warnings were proposed last November as part of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which was supported by both Republicans and Democrats in 2009. The new warnings would cover the upper half of the entire cigarette package, front and back, and would take up nearly a quarter of the display space on advertisement.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tobacco use causes 443,000 deaths in the United States each year, wastes almost $200 billion every year in medical costs and lost worker productivity. But the major tobacco companies say the images demonize the industry and stigmatize smokers, The New York Times reported. Tho less
