According to the International Menopause Society, World Menopause Day is intended to raise awareness of the symptoms of this stage in a woman's life, which generally begins between the ages of 45 and 55.

Although menopause affects each individual female differently, the hallmark of menopause is the cessation of menstruation.

Fairly universal complaints usually include hot flushes and night sweats. Many women report additional concerns, such as the appearance of facial hair, appetite changes, interrupted sleep or insomnia, incontinence, reduced libido, spotting and weight gain.

Some menopausal ladies even admit to momentary memory lapses, mood swings and even personal panic attacks during this transitional time. Others seem to slip through this season serenely.

What are some of the most popular synonyms for menopause?

How about the biological bridge, cessation of menses, change of life, Clammy Jammies, climacteric progression, farewell to Aunt Dot, Essie's drop, gust of Grandma, hormonal hell stop, private personal passage, red-hot mama season, sunset sweats, Sweaty Betty Days and timely transition?

What other terms have you heard that describe menopause for women? And do you believe there is such a thing as male menopause? Have you seen this phenomenon in anyone you know?
