It's Pregnancy Awareness Month. Here's a rundown of things to AVOID at the supermarket if you're expecting.
If you're pregnant, going to the grocery store is not going to be the way it used to be. There are several things you need to limit or avoid all together to maximize your own health and to protect the health of your unborn fetus.
For example, if you're shopping for fish, you want to avoid:
- swordfish
- shark
- king mackerel
- tile fish
And, when you're shopping for luncheon or deli meats beware of things like:
- salami
- hot dogs
- turkey
You also want to avoid any type of raw sprouts because those can be a breeding ground for germs, so steer clear of those, pregnant or even if you're not pregnant.
And, I hate to say it you sushi lovers, but you need to avoid all raw fish that's frequently found in sushi. It's better to just stay away from all of that. Also, you want to avoid anything that's made with uncooked eggs. So, ceasar salad dressing is one common example of something that you want to limit or completely avoid when you're pregnant because it just ups your risk for foodborne illness.
So, you don't need to be afraid when shopping for food when you're pregnant, just be mindful of the things you want to avoid. And, just remember: there are so many other wonderful food options for you during this time. Click here for a list of GOOD FOR YOU (and baby) picks.
