"Nasty, Nasty Fat People"

"Nasty, Nasty Fat People." That was a comment on a recent blog here on Shine.

And I am appalled. Not only by the cold comments, but by reports of obesity growing in America and World Wide. And I'm here to say, that my BMI says I'm obese at 5'5", 204 pounds. But I don't look like it. I don't consider myself obese. Regardless, I am.

I am not here to say that obesity is good, or OK, or tolerable. Because it's not. I spent most of my childhood days outside on my bike and roller skates, not inside playing PS3 (or should I say, Super Nintendo, ha). There is a difference in children today, and I was a kid only a decade ago...

However, the whole food system is backwards.

I have a lot of good friends, including my sister, who are on food stamps. While it is helpful monetarily, health wise it's a train wreck. It makes absolutely no sense to me that she can get a box of macaroni and cheese for free, but have to pay for an apple.

Even if you're not on food stamps and you're just a regular person grocery shopping, look at the prices:

Hamburger Helper: $2.39/box
4 Oranges: 3 pounds @ $1.99/pound = $5.97

Package of Chocolate Chip Cookies, Best Choice Brand: $1.50/package
Large bag of salad: $3.59

There's so many more examples. Bottom line: It's CHEAPER to be fat.
So you mean to tell me that it costs you less money to process, freeze cook and package hamburger helper than it is to pick an apple off a tree and put it in a bag?

I could be totally out of left field here. But I do know one thing:

Last week I shopped at Aldi groccery store to save money and I spent $46 on food for one week -- most of it was boxed food, canned veggies, lunch meat. This week I went to Walmart and bought only fresh vegetables and fruits (for my diet) and spent $67. Again, that was ONLY fruits and vegetables. If I were to buy chicken breasts, ground turkey, Heaven-forbid a loaf of bread -- my total would've been over $100.

There is something wrong with our food system.
It's not just fat people being lazy.
End rant.
