One of my favorite things about summertime is a road trip! You can leave on a spur of the moment and head out to wherever your heart desires (or at least where your car can take you in a timely manner). You get far enough away to feel like you're on vacation, but not so far that you can't get home quickly. But just because you're traveling doesn't mean you have to leave your healthy lifestyle at home. Take your yoga practice on the road!
When you are sitting for long periods of time behind the wheel, stopping every hour is essential when it comes to keeping your mind and body awake. Yoga, in particular is the perfect way to get moving! According toMyYogaWorks teacher Jesse Schein, "when we sit or are sedentary on a road trip our muscles start to fall asleep and nothing is stimulating our circulation. Everything just kind of slows down and goes into veg mode. Yoga is a great and fun way to make our bodies AND our minds ALERT and more OPEN to everything."

Not interested in a full yoga pit stop? Just focus on the areas that really need the wake up call- your spine, hips, hamstrings, and shoulders. A few to try:
-Basic Sun Salutation. Down Dog stretches the spine, hamstrings, shoulders and neck, refreshing the brain.
-Pigeon. This is an amazing pose for anyone with tight hips and glutes. Pull over and find a patch of grass (or pull your yoga mat out of your trunk) and relax into pigeon for a few minutes on each side.
-Warrior II. It's empowering, rejuvenating, plus this pose opens up your chest, hips, and legs.
You'll feel so great you might crave a yoga booster even more often than on the hour. And that's great! Especially when there is traffic, taking a few quick breathers will help you avoid road rage, release the ache in your lower back, and may even help you burn a few calories.
Stuck in a traffic jam with no way of pulling over? Enjoy several oxygenating yoga breaths, filling your lungs full of revitalizing oxygen, and blowing all that hot air out!
