Science Invented A Birth Control Shot For Men, So Why Does Nobody Seem To Care?

What if there was a birth control shot for men that was easy to administer, 100% effective, and totally reversible? Sounds pretty good, no? Well apparently, there already is one, it's just not approved for use in the U.S. yet, and nobody seems to know about it. I, for one, had no clue this miraculous thing existed until I saw this article on Jezebel today. It sounds amazing!

According to a Wired article on the subject, the procedure was invented by a "maverick" Indian scientist named Sujoy Gupta, who has "spent more than 30 years refining the idea while battling bureaucrats in his own country and skeptics worldwide." Much simpler than a vasectomy, the procedure involves simply injecting the ol' sperm tubes with a nontoxic substance that chemically incapacitates them as they flow through, rendering them unable of fertilizing the egg. It's been totally safe and effective for the hundreds of men who've participated in the clinical trials so far, which means it could be widely available in India in as little as two years, and the FDA may soon start the (long) process of approving it for use in the U.S. This is exciting.

Horrible/Amazing Experiences We've Had On Birth Control Pills

So why hasn't anyone been talking about it? Jezebel's Anna North points out that the Wired article got barely any pick-up on blogs since its publication a month ago, which might just be an oversight on the part of us imperfect bloggers. (I'm adding Wired to my Google reader now, okay?) Beyond that, though, there might be some resistance to the idea on the part of both women and men who think a male birth control shot just sounds weird. With the exception of condoms and vasectomies, birth control has been located in women's bodies for so long that it might seem strange to move it anywhere else.

I must admit, I like the feeling of control I have knowing that I take my birth control pill at the exact same time every day (well, mostly), and that my boyfriend trusts me to take on this responsibility for the both of us. A male birth control would require me to trust him with this instead, and for him to go through a not un-scary procedure. (Granted, I find any procedure involving a needle scary.) You would have to trust your male partner to a great degree, and I'm sure a few crazy men would lie about having had it in order to get their girlfriends pregnant, just like a few crazy women have lied about being on the pill in order to get pregnant. (Don't date crazy people, friends.)

When Are People Going to Learn That Birth Control Jokes Are Funny?

But as a way to get off artificial hormones without going through the pain of IUD insertion, this sounds like a really good option, and one I'd probably be interested in, were it available here. Women bear so much of the pain related to both having babies and not having babies, it would be nice to see men take on some of the burden for a change. Maybe if everyone learns about it and starts talking about it more, it will send the FDA a message that we want this option for ourselves in the U.S. So go on, tell your friends! Your baby-free, artificial-hormone-free, I.U.D.-free body will thank you someday.

Wow-sorry I give my man a bit more credit than most of you seem to. Most guys I know would go through some pain to ensure they were baby free for a while. No one should have to feel that their status as a parent is in the hands of someone else. Women have a plethora of choices, men should too. As for the whining about it being a shot in the groin-please. We women go through quite a bit of pain in the groin and other areas for the sake of staying healthy(Pap tests), getting pregnant(ask a friend about fertility treatments), having a baby(too long a list to mention), and recovering, that doesn't even cover the monthly stuff we just deal with, cause while uncomfortable we are big girls and don't need to gripe all the time.

The shot lasts for 10 years and is reversible they say with a different shot. The USA will never see this in on the market anytime soon. The drug is too cheap, so drug companies will not make any money from it. If we needed the shot every month, then they probably would take it on. If you wanted the shot very soon, you would probably have to fly to India.

First of all, Don't blame men because you CHOOSE to be with some one who is unreliable. I for one would love to have the option to be on birth control for not only my peace of mind but my partners. Two forms of contraception are always better than one because we know that many things can counter act the pill.

I actually heard about this a while back. Someone said it makes men sterile for 5 years? Not sure if that's an actual fact or just hearsay, though. Hmm...

men just don't want the burden of doing anything, they EXPECT it to be the woman that takes care of this "issue", it will always be the way. It doesn't matter that it has ALWAYs been easier to do something to a man, that is common sense, given women's hormonal cycle, but society and the gender will always be in the frame of mind that women need to be preventative, men need to be free to spread their seed around.

this NEEDS to be approved in the U.S because men are WAY more sexually active then women. and it will decrease the rate of deadbeat dads.

I think it's a great idea, I just wonder how long it will take the FDA to approve this?

Im excited about this...and yet scared....the problem is, there are TOO many naive men out there who believes the worst thing he can do is get a woman pregnant..im afraid if this procedure was available to us...there would be plenty of guys screwing any and everything and not worry about condoms anymore...STD rate would go through the roof...

The reason it has not gotten a lot of press because it is just chemical vasectomy. It's not just a shot. It's a shot in the scrotum. It isn't just a pill, series of shots in the arm or a device that is put in but doesn't touch your reproductive organs. You still have to have an operation so it isn't like yippee men get a shot in the arm or daily pill. Its yippee men get a shot in the crotch. Ouch!

I can't wait for this, just one more way to protect youself even more.

I would still use birth control but to also have him on it would increase my feeling of security.

besides which would a guy choose birth control or wearing a condom.

While this can and does put a ball (no pun intended) in the men's court in terms of birth control, women should by no means forsake their own birth control... because both men and women alike will trap a partner by saying they are on some birth control remedy all the while not and the woman ends up pregnant... it just gives men a chance to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies as well...

I think the reason more people haven't heard about it is because most men are basically wimps who don't want a needle near their junk. But the thing is, wouldn't it be better to have that momentary discomfort and be worry free for 10 years? Imagine if both the man and the woman were on birth control, the unplanned pregnancy rate would plummet! Considering that 50% of all pregnancies are unplanned, we need to continually research and create new methods of contraception.
