Menopause is something most women will have to go through eventually. For many, the symptoms of menopause are not pleasant. In fact, they can negatively affect the quality of life for some. Menopause supplements have been helpful to many women who have tried them in lieu of hormone therapy. Here are a few supplements that women have tried to relieve their menopause symptoms.

Amberen

Amberen is a menopausal supplement from Lunada Biomedical. It's proprietary compound is made from ammonium succinate, calcium succinate, monosodium L-glutamate, glycine, magnesium disuccinate hydrate, zinc difumarate hydrate, and tocopherol acetate (Vitamin E). Basically this compound is made up of different salts, an amino acid, zinc and Vitamin E. Many women are talking about this supplement in WebMD forums and even in eBay forums as an alternative to hormone therapy. Women have reported a reduction in hot flash occurrences, more restful night's sleep, and an increase in energy. It is important to mention that because the compound contains salts, people who suffer from high blood pressure may need to consult with their doctor to make sure Amberen does not interfere with your medication. Also, if you currently take a vitamin supplement, you may want to switch to one that does not contain calcium, vitamin E and zinc to prevent taking too much of each.

Black Cohosh

According to the Mayo Clinic, black cohosh is widely used in Europe for the treatment of hot flashes. Here in the United States women have begun using this herbal supplement to treat their menopausal symptoms. Its safety record is pretty good and it typically taken in conjunction with other supplements. However, there is speculation over whether or not it is really effective in providing menopausal relief.

Red Clover

Like black cohosh, there is no conclusive evidence this works in treating hot flashes. However, some women claim it does relieve hot flashes. No serious side effects have been reported so it is deemed relatively safe to take.

Phytoestrogens

These estrogens are found in certain foods like soybeans, flaxseed, chickpeas, whole grains, other legumes, as well so other fruits and vegetables. These are taken in pill form and are used to help with menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. There is a concern about cancer risk, especially for those who have had breast cancer.

Ginseng

It seems as if ginseng is the wonder herb. Research has shown that ginseng can help with mood swings, restless night's sleep, and improve one's overall sense of well-being. Unfortunately, it is not useful for treating hot flashes.

These menopause supplements have worked for some women. You may have to do a little trial and error to find which one or combination of supplements that will work for you. You may find that Amberen alone works to control your menopausal symptoms or perhaps the combination of black cohosh and ginseng may work for you. However, it is important to consult your doctor before trying any of these supplements, especially if you are currently taking other medications as these supplements may interfere with those medications.
