Where do sweet potatoes and greek yogurt fit in?

I've read that its not the potato itself that's the problem but what people put on them.

The fact that potato is on the list is an example of how there really is no definitive source of nutritional information. Yes potatoes have some good nutrients but the amount of carbs far outweighs them. I just look for common threads across multiple information sources and never trust one source 100%.

Regarding the potatoes. I eat sweet potatoes. When I want I white potato I use the small red ones as they do not have so much starch. Like anything else, moderation and balance is the key.

Maybe the potato is good for us. Maybe it is the way it is prepared that makes us gain weight. French Fries, definately. Mashed potatos with lots of milk and butter, yes. Baked with loads of sour cream, for sure. How about a baked potato with just a little butter, salt and pepper?

The healthiest foods are those that are grown on HEALTHY SOIL.
Chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides destroy the microorganisms in the soil--
the ECOSYSTEM OF A LIVING SOIL--
that help plants take up minerals and other nutrients from the soil.
The chemicals make the plants look healthy but the plants are poor in nutrition.

excellent post! well researched and shows us why these foods are good for us in great detail and shows us that heating certain foods past a tempature can kill key nutrients. Quite impressed with this post. There are lots of foods omitted of course that are also included in the super food catagory like papya, mango, flax seeds, s---ake mushrooms, onions, kale, quinoa, blueberries, apples, oranges, almonds, acai. There are more of course, but this helps folks know that there is tons of variety in healthy eating, and when you add spices and herbs and the right oils, eating healthy can be a mind blowing experience.

Potatoes are broken down by the body very quickly and cause a spike in blood sugar. They are probably ok for healthy people, but not good for anyone trying to lose weight. Sweet potatoes are a lot better, but still have a ton of carbs. You want foods that are broken down slowly like vegetables, good fats, lean protein, and to a certain extent fruit.

Did anyone else notice that unappetizing photo. of beans. Beans are so good for you. They deserve a better representation than that!

Maybe it should be sweet potato instead or regular potatoes.

Well the potato is healthy when used properly. The potato is pure sugar. It also should never be eaten with animal protein.

Just eat anything in sensible way but not over indulge and the most important is ofcourse, eat healthy and must be active like exercise even how busy we are. Local home grown fruits and vegetable contain the same nutrient as imported as well as far more cheaper and less contaminated with chemicals. We lived in the tropics we eats tropical produce and the supper food mentioned above were imported and can make a hole in the pocket. Instead of imported spinach, we takes green mustard, and hundred more varieties of green veges or fruits. Dried edamame (green soya bean) also contain too much salt, frequent snack on this can cause water retention and raise high blood pressure. Just eat varieties of natural food and try to avoid junk unless if craving take it as a treat.

Ignore that drivel about blood type. It has ZERO basis in scientific fact. Absolute rubbish peddled by a quack...

If i remember chemistry correctly the potato is a starch which breaks down into a complex carbohydrate in the body. These complex carbs are the bodies long term energy solution while simple sugars are its short term energy solution. If a person is sedentary and has no use for the complex carbs they begin to be stored in the body as...you guessed it. Fat. So...if you are relatively active then the starchy tater probably isnt going to hurt you any. I think this can be said about many food. Its not the food that makes us fat it is our increasingly sedentary lifestyles that are making us fat.

So tired of people demonizing salt!!
If you don't have enough salt in your system, you will have health issues. If you have too much salt in your system, you will have health issues.

Not all salt is equal. Trying buying sea salt and other salts. Much better, and tastier, than table salt. You'd be amazed at the difference between unprocessed regional salts. Himalayan salt is actually pretty good!

Outside of potatoes, salmon and chocolate, I don't get it.
WHO eats a whole lemon? Eating lemons are not good for your teeth in the long run. Oranges have just as much Vitamin C! I don't know about anyone else, but I couldn't eat a medium stalk of broccoli along with the rest of my dinner!! Walnuts, 1 ounce is 185 cals!
3 ounces of salmon has 177 cals and twice as much omega 3 & 6. And unlike Walnuts, Salmon is otherwise more nutritionally dense. There are so many other foods out there than walnuts that are such a better choice! 185 cal. per ounce isn't wise.
1 avocado is 227 cals each. Anyone on a 1200 calorie diet is going to be hard pressed to include an entire avocado or even 1/2 in any one meal and still get a varied amount of food in one day.
Ounce for ounce, spinach has more folate, So does salmon.

A more realistic article is foods that pack a punch with calories that won't ruin your menu that needs to add up than less than 1200 cls.

There really isn't a whole lot of super in many of these so-called "Healthiest Foods on the Planet"
1 cup of cantaloupe has all the Vitamin A & C that you need, more potassium than a banana for only 60 calories. **1 cup of melon balls (about 12) Seems a much better choice than a simple lemon. Chances are, you're getting 2 major vitamins out of the way that can easily fit into a -1200 calorie diet.

I would go yams instead of potatoes.

No one seems to address smoked salmon. Besides the high-sodium thing, is it just as nutritional as the non-smoked? (I love both Alaskan wild-caught coho salmon.)

I have to jump on the potato band wagon. Potatoes themselves are healthy, but it's how they're cooked, and what's slathered on them that makes them unhealthy. I hate broccoli and can't say I like spinach, but gosh, that lemon looks gorgeous. :D
