The 17-Day Diet: pros and cons of the latest weight-loss craze

A San Diego physician is quickly joining the ranks of Internet phenomenons with one of the world's first viral diets. Fans of his 17-Day Diet have taken to Twitter, YouTube, and the blogosphere to sing the praises of Dr. Mike Moreno's weight-loss regimen. Already a best seller, his new book professes the power of the number 17. With 17 minutes of daily exercise and four different 17-day meal plan cycles, the diet promises dramatic weight loss results for life. Broken into four different parts, the plan is designed to jump-start the body's metabolism by switching up eating habits every 17 days. The first cycle involves a restrictive calorie diet, and the other three toggle between various carbs, proteins, fruits and veggies for an overall healthy makeover.

"I think this diet is probably the only diet that is for everybody," Moreno tells ABC News. "And that means whether you want to lose five pounds for your high school reunion coming up, whether you want to lose 150 pounds, or whether you're just comfortable with who you are and how you look and your health and your weight, as it is, this is just a way to not only focus on the scale moving, but it's focusing on good, proper digestive health." Flexibility is one big thing that's setting Moreno's bestselling diet book apart from the others. Based on the sheer numbers of proponents, the diet accommodates a lot of different lifestyles. But not everyone is on board-some nutrition experts have their reservations about Moreno's meal plan. Here, they weigh some of the pros and cons.

    Pros:

It doesn't get monotonous. The plan itself is 68 days long, but it's broken up in four parts, 17 days a piece. "Since it divides weight loss into little chunks, each cycle seems doable," says nutritionist Laurie Slayton, who runs the diet website foodtrainers.net.

The results are fast. "You get good results in the first phase especially," adds Slayton. During the first 17 days, dieters can lose up to 15 pounds by eating a restrictive diet of 1,200 calories a day. Seeing results so fast makes for some serious motivation to stick with it.

There's a long-term emphasis. The first 17 days are the most extreme, but the second cycle introduces more calories and the chance to shed another 5 pounds and the last two cycles are designed to integrate healthier overall eating habits into your long-term lifestyle. Swapping out mayo for mustard, and sugars for nectar and spices are some of the basic principles for keeping off the weight. "If you eat a highly processed diet this could be a good switch," says Slayton. "If you are a healthy eater you already know things like egg whites, fish, and vegetables are good for you."

It's fairly balanced. Unlike the Atkins diet, Moreno's plan doesn't completely cut out one major source of nutrition. Fruits, veggies, protein-rich meats and healthy carbs are all part of the constantly shifting meal plan so your body is never completely deprived of one thing. Overall, it's considered fairly safe as opposed to more high-risk deprivation diets and
    cleanses.

    Cons:

The scientific proof isn't totally convincing. Moreno claims that shifting your meal plan every 17 days before your body registers certain eating habits is a way to keep your metabolism in high gear, but not everyone is buying it. "There is no scientific evidence to support the efficacy of calorie cycling or its effect on metabolism," Mary Hartley, director of nutrition at Calorie Count, tells the editors of Diets In Review. "There is no harm in calorie cycling temporarily or indefinitely and the process happens naturally for most people, who don't eat or burn the same number of calories every day."

Marisa Sherry, a registered dietician, questions one hard-and-fast rule of the diet-no starchy carbs or fruit after 2 P.M. "There's no proof that after certain times of day your body loses the ability to digest carbohydrates," Sherry tells CBS News.

The first 17 days of calorie restrictions may backfire: "You are cleansing your body of the unhealthy foods you have been eating," says Sherry. "But if you are not consuming enough calories to meet your resting metabolic needs, then you are in starvation mode which actually slows your metabolism."

It's an investment: While there's plenty of store-bought foods that fall into the meal plans, dieters are encouraged to buy specific 17-Day Diet branded snacks like the breakfast cookie. That can rack up your bills unnecessarily.

It's complicated: "I have two nutrition degrees and found the explanations a little confusing," says Slayton. Since the guidelines of the diet are constantly shifting, following the plan takes focus, organization and the constant recording of calorie intake. Still, the basic principles are simple. "Cut your calories and increase your exercise, that's how it's done," Sherry tells CBS News. "If you can get away from the rules that aren't based on science, it should work just fine."

This article was stupid and not based on first hand knowledge. I have been on this for 37 days and have lost 22lbs. There is no counting or measuring. Just follow the menu plan. It couldn't be more smoke. And its cheaper than Adkins. I suggest a beach body video to help things along, but its not necessary.

I have been on the 17 diet for 7 days and have followed it exectly as recommended and have lost 1.8 Lbs? My wife has lost .8 Lbs. I think part of the reason we havnet saw the big resuts is due to the fact that we only have about 10-15 Lbs to lose

I am 64 years old and have lost 24 lbs. in 16 weeks and have gone from size 16 to size 10! I eat healthy now, drink lots of water, NO sodas, a lot less sweets, and feel 20 years younger. I highly recommend the 17- Day Diet because the book spells out everything - what you can eat each cycle and even has recipes. The Power Cookie is delicious! I have not gained any weight back since I reached my ideal weight of 126 two months ago. People who criticize this diet have not read the book or tried it apparently!

If the Yahoo people or the dietician who wrote this did their research they would know that the breakfast cookie is something you make and not buy, so their "its an investment agruement" is not true.

I like to call it a Healthy eating program and its help me shed 16 lbs in 26 days, and I have never eaten healthier.

I have been on the 17 day diet since veterans day 2011 (nov11) and to this day I've lost 30 pounds! I'm on my second cycle 1 and this tome is much easier. I still need about 35 more lbs to go but I definitely see the light at the end of the tunnel. I highly recommend this book/diet.

I too have had good results on the diet. I have been on this since the beginning of January and I am down 20 lbs but I seem to be stuck at the 20 and still have another 35lbs to go, my question to you is did you ever do this? I have been stuck there for over a week now and can't seem to get it to go beyond 20 lbs....I hope you can shed some light on this...

The publisher is his son. This may invalidate his opinion on the book.

I scrolled through some of the negative comments and I don't believe these people have actually read the book and tried it. I'm 62, have lost 40 lbs and am continuing to loss on this plan. I don't use the menus in the book, because I like to plan meals according to what I want to eat and the foods I like. The biggest food product change I made was introducing ground turkey into my diet. I stick to the "no fruit or bread carbs after 2:00" rule. I've gone off of it for a few days at a time while on vacation, but the 5 lbs I gained back were off in 5 days.

congrats on your loss! i hope to be as successful as you! i am on day 9 and I've lost 10 lbs already :) people on here don't know what they are talking about!!

I am on the 8th day of Cycle 2 and to date have lost 20 lbs. I agree that most of the negative comments must have been from people who have not read the book, because it is all about lifestyle change. I needed to reboot my metabolism and to find a way to be and feel back in control. I am thrilled...just 55 more lbs to go!

The 17-day diet is working amazingly well for me. I've lost 40 lbs in 15 weeks. It has worked for me just like it says. I haven't been getting the exercise in daily, but when I have I see a good loss. I still have 75 lbs to lose to be at goal. I've recommended it highly to friends.
    • Catherine  •  6 months ago
My sister tried it and has lost almost 20lbs in a little over a month. It's hard to switch over to healthy eating when you haven't been eating healthy for years. I know there was an earlier comment "Why cant people just learn to eat a healthy every day diet? Cut out all that garbage proccessed food and you fresh food!" Over eating is an addiction and can be hard to break just like drinking, smoking etc. My sister and I don't drink and smoke but have always turned to food in stressful situations. If you have never had that addiction you cannot judge those who are trying new ways to change their lives. My sister is so happy with this new diet. She is learning how to eat healthy and training for a 5k. It may not work for everyone but it is working for her.

Just Curious...I couldn't agree with you more. I can't take anything away from what you've said. I'll just add that I wish I'd seen this book years ago!!!!!!! I'm back to cycle 1 because I havn't reached my goal, but finally my goal is well in sight. After trying many things that did not work, finally I see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!!! Yes how wonderful is that?

I have been doing the "17 Day Diet", and I have to say, it really is everything the author and numerous other medical professionals says it will be. Has it been easy? Absolutely not. It's not easy to cut out all of the processed and fatty foods you're used to eating, and it takes some planning to prepare meals based around fresh veggies and fruit. But, I will tell you that the very next day after beginning this diet, I had an immense increase in energy and that alone was enough to keep at it. After about a week, I wasn't craving the sweets or processed foods I did before. You don't feel restricted, and it provides a solid foundation for how you should healthfully eat every day. Based on my experience, I have no negative feedback regarding this book and diet plan.

I did this diet while working at chickfia. I lost 18 pounds in the first 17 days and i felt GREAT! then after the first 17 days I went back to my old ways, Drinking milkshakes eating mcdonalds and chickfila. VERY BAD EATING. Over a 7 month period I only gained 5 pounds back! It REALLY does fasten your metabolism. I am going back on it next week and hope to lose my 50 pond goal by new years!

To everyone with the whole "eat less, move more" Have you ever thought someone might be over weight due to a medical issue? My wife has been struggling with her weight for some time. Since she Has many food allergies, and being put on steroids for asthma almost the entire time of her 3 pregnancies. She had back surgery from an injury in a car accident, But thank the lord she has almost recovered 90%. Having a child with special diet requirements, and if she isn't on her diet it causes mental retardation. My wife makes the sacrifice every day with not being able to be on her diet so our daughter can be on hers! Because nothing is cheap in Alaska, or shipping to Alaska. So the next time you see someone over weight, stop and think, before you make judgments. oh p.s. our main meat/protein supply is Salmon (we catch), moose (we shoot). Veggies (we grow). and she is at the gym 5 days a week, for 2 hours a day. 30 mins in the cardio room, 30 min in the weight room. and one hour in the pool swimming laps. on top of 7 days a week taking the dogs on a 2 mile walk. So tell me... please..... this eating healthy and exercising, is it healthy?? Yes... does it mean you're gonna be 115lbs?? NO! I love my wife, and she tries soo hard every day. And when people look her like she is scum of the earth, and not worth the ground she walks on. and she must be a pig. It hurts our whole family!! So again... Please. Don't make judgments on things and people you don't know or understand.. or remember the Golden rule... Don't judge a book by its cover!!!

Perhaps some of you should actually read the WHOLE thing as opposed to just a paragraph describing it. The goal of the book is a healthy all the time diet.

SuzyQ, your post could have been written by me. I have lost 9 pounds and my husband has lost 21, and my daughter has lost 12 pounds. This has been the best diet I have ever been on. We only had trouble with not getting any bread, but after 17 days we are doing much better. We are 3 days into cycle 2 and still losing weight. It is a healthy diet and I hope many more people like me will try it. Good Luck!!!!

I am getting ready to start this diet. I have read most of the comments and I wonder how many of the sarcastic haters are skinny people. I have lost 60 lbs on my own over the last 5 years and have around 200 left to lose to get to the middle of my healthy bmi range. Until you have lived with the pain of carrying that much weight you will never understand. This diet encourages lifestyle change including moving more, eating healthy and cutting out junk food. Why are people so against that. I don't accuse skinny people of starving themselves so please dont accuse those of us with some weight issues of being lazy and dumb.

Okay, I think all of you need to buy this book. What is written above is not even close to what is contained in the book. This diet works. I have lost 40lbs following this diet. My mother has lost 30lbs and every one of her friends have lost between 15-35lbs. Trust me this is not a fad diet. I have struggled with low metabolism all my life. This really jump started my metabolism and has helped me lose the weight. And I haven't followed the diet to a "T". If I wanna eat a slice of pizza I do. I didn't change my condiments to low fat. I never once drank the 8oz glass of water with lemon in it every morning. I'm still losing weight on this diet and my goal is another 20lbs. This diet trains you slowly on the lifestyle change everyone needs. It is a very educational book and I recommend it to anyone that is looking to change their life and wanna see the pounds fall off.
