The odds of taking a shower

What are the odds you took a shower today?

The majority of American adults ( 1 in 1.59 , or 63%) shower at least once a day. And that doesn't count baths.

People love their showers. Fifty percent of mothers admit they use the shower as an escape. And a full 25% of the population admits to occasionally breaking into song. Some people like to daydream, but there are also the Type A's who insist on being productive even under the suds. Forty-eight percent of men and 64% of women compile their to-do lists while showering.

People in the Northeast out-shower those in other parts of the country. Men are more likely ( 1 in 1.43 , or 70%) than women ( 1 in 1.75 or 57%) to take a daily shower, but women stay in a tad longer. The average shower for a man lasts 12 minutes; add two more minutes for a woman (it's the hair!).

Like all human endeavors, showers have been studied and analyzed for their positive and negative qualities, and all is not perfect in the world of tiles and towels. Sixty percent of Americans share their shower space with a spouse or significant other, and, according to surveys, they're not happy about it. Men are troubled by the clutter of their partners' shampoos, conditioners, soaps, and shaving accoutrements. Women are bugged by men who don't wipe down the shower when they're done. And both genders are offenders when it comes to their number one shared exasperation: a partner leaving hair in the drain or on the soap.

Despite the complaints, lots of people would like to avoid the job of cleaning the shower stall. In fact, there are some pretty miserable things people would rather do than clean a shower. Forty-five percent of people would rather pay their bills.

Yeap.. I shower at least once a day, if not more, depending on what I'm doing and how hot it is that day.

I open up a batch of problems if I were to bathe like some do everyday! I take a shower only in the evenings (unless there are extra curricular activities *wink*). And they're only luke warm. Too hot strips your skin of essential oils = more tinea rosea (skin condition further irritated by constant removal of natural oils + lots of stress ... working mom, hello!)

On a side note, I just bought that scrubbing bubbles thing w/ the battery powered sprayer... it CLAIMS it'll keep cleaning for like, 4 days. We'll see about that.

I sure wish some of the people that come into an ER would read this. You all would be horrified if I told you how many people stink so bad that it takes ones breath away! I'm not talking sweaty smell, I'm talking pure body stench! Crotch rot stink! Its awful how many people go day after day, wearing the same clothes, smelling like a tobacco chimney and throw body odor on top of that. Its awful.
I shower every day, I also have to use plenty of moisturizer due to it. But I gladly use it rather than be offensive to others. I work closely with the public and when standing in small examining rooms, I wouldn't want people to have to hold their breathes. The same goes with breath, people please brush your teeth and if you have a gum problem, please suck on some mints or something.
I wouldn't take more than one shower/bath a day due to excessive dry skin, but surely wash up afterward especially if you are doing hard work. I wish I could post this blog in every ER examining room so offenders could get a hint LOL.

Really? I think it is a little gross not to take a shower everyday. Ugh! I could understand if you weren't leaving the house. . . maybe, but even on my days off, if I don't take a shower by noon I feel disgusting.
And I think guys rank more showers because they work outside and get dirty while women tend to get all the other chores. I know that I generally take one shower a day, maybe two, but my other half generally takes 2, whther it's yardwork in the summer or plowing and shovelling in the winter he is always a little yuckier after his after work work!

i agree with slam why would you take a shower if you plan on going to the gym or cutting the grass or doing something you know thats gonna make you sweaty and gross. besides really do you need to take a shower 2-3 times a day and soak in the tub

My problem is not about when I take showers, My problem is trying to find the right cleaning product for my fiberglass shower. I have used countless products and nothing works on scum, I can't scrub it because because fiberglass scratches easily. I have never used baking soda. Somebody suggested that but for some reason i think it will scratch it. Does anybody else have this problem? AARRGh.

i shower about every other day unless it's summertime, which isn't very long up here. that's if i don't work out or do sweat-inducing work.
normal days - why? i don't stink, feel or look dirty, and i have super dry skin that hates my hard water
2 showers a day? holy crap, i'd go broke buying all the lotion, plus think of how much time you spend in your life pre-, shower, and post-shower. i'd rather be doing something else.

I shower almost every day... during the winter though, when it's cold out and I'm not sweating (and bundled up not getting my body dirty being covered almost head-to-foot), I skip occasionally.

the thing i like best about showering is the hot stream of hot water beating down on the parts that
ache. it feels so good, talking about heat therapy you can't be it. and your getting clean to. two for the price of one

In addition to showering in the morning, I wash my feet at the end of the day as well. (of course I wash my face to!)

I'd rather clean my shower any day if it meant I didn't have bills to pay ;-)

I don't even bathe. I like a good shower when I get the chance.

I take a 5 min shower in the morning before work, and then in the summer a second 3 mins or less after my afternoon work outs, out doors. Just to cool down and rinse off the sweat...However, I agree with slam...water consumption is a problem folks! Technically, we don't need to shower daily, we have just developed that habit in our society. There is no medical need. I won't even talk about the chemicals your scrubbing into your body and flushing down the drain if you are using store bought commerical shampoos/bodywash/soap! Dangerous stuff!

Some people don't bathe at all.
I am not criticizing, but really, if you've ever ridden on public transportation on a hot day (buses, subway, ect) the smell is overbearing. Ditto for people who decide to kick off their shoes and act like the stink bomb they released is non-existent.
How many of us think in our heads "You @sshole, take a shower, wash your feet and throw out those minging shoes". Do we dare say anything?
Probably not. But you all know who you are.

My husband and I are the EXACT opposite of what this article states. I shower shorter, he showers longer. I shower every day if not TWICE a day and he only showers every other day (kind of annoying, though).

      Mine are WAY hotter!! lol

not only are those that shower/bather daily or more often wasting water, putting multiple chemicals into the environment, but you are also ingesting a lot of chlorine through your skin and lungs. the only body parts that need a daily cleaning are your underarms and crotch/groin/back side areas. washing the skin daily will dry it out and no amount of lotion will rehydrate it. it is so easy to clean up the necessary parts daily without taking a shower. i don't stink and my hair is not greasy either. :)

If you are bathing and showering excessively(more than once a day) you need to make sure you are using products that have the least amount of damaging chemicals in them. All beauty and health care products have these chemicals but some are better than others. And baby products usually have higher amount for some crazy reason. I found a non profit site that I use called Skin Deep. You can search for all of the products you use and it will tell you what concentrations of dangerous substances are in it. And you can compare products to see which has the least amount also. There are also trace amounts of dangerous chemicals in the water you use so you are again exposing yourself more than necessary. Any of this can easily be researched into on the net.

I can't imagine not showering everyday, i shower at least 2 times a day (in the morning and when I get home from work). On a hot day I will even shower more depending on how much I'm out running around. I know it says with out baths, but I can't imagine that the number for men would go up anymore if they did add baths.
    • Giz  •  1 year 11 months ago
Yeah, but this doesn't count baths.... Women take more baths... Anyway, I can't imagine not showering at least once a day. This weekend it was crazy hot and humid in the northeast and as a result, I was taking 2-3 (albeit short) showers a day. Even when I choose a bath over a shower, I get in the shower afterwards to rinse off my body and hair.

I actually don't mind cleaning the bathroom.... My ex and I had a great arrangement. Cleaning and scrubbing a bathroom or the kitchen floor doesn't bother me (I actually almost enjoy it), but I hate doing dishes and I'm not so great at straightening up as I go along. I did most of the scrubbing and he took care of most of the straightening and the dishes.

My hair in the drain, and everywhere else, (I seriously think I shed more than my cat) annoys me, so I don't know how anyone else puts up with it.
