The only 5 diet rules you need

Lots of diets work for lots of people-the key is to find what works best for you. But if you're not sure where to begin, these 5 science-proven tips (that are easy to fit into any lifestyle) will get you started:

    1. Snack on almonds
When salty cravings strike, bypass the pretzels or popcorn. In a study of 65 men and women who were following a low-calorie diet, California researchers found that those who noshed on the nuts shrank their waistlines nearly 50% more than dieters who didn't eat them, despite consuming the same number of calories. Likewise, Spanish researchers found that even without increasing exercise, a diet enriched with monounsaturated fatty acids (aka MUFAs, found in foods such as almonds and avocados) decreased the accumulation of abdominal fat, compared with a carbohydrate-heavy diet, which increased it.

    2. Fill up on fiber
"When you slow digestion, you slow the delivery of glucose [blood sugar] to the bloodstream," says Marie Savard, MD, author of The Body Shape Solution to Weight Loss and Wellness. "That means less insulin is released, and with lower insulin release comes lower visceral [belly] fat storage." In a study of more than 2,900 adults, those who ate the most fiber weighed less and had lower insulin levels and slimmer waistlines than those who ate the least. Aim for at least 25 g a day from such foods as vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, brown rice, and whole grain bread, cereal, and pasta.

    Delicious high fiber foods

    3. Stay satisfied with protein
Gram for gram, protein has the same number of calories as carbs (and half that of fat), but takes longer to digest, so you feel full longer. It also seems to help lower levels of the hormone ghrelin, which is known to stimulate appetite. In a Danish study of 60 men and women, those following a diet that included 25% of calories from protein lost nearly twice as much fat after 6 months than those eating a diet with 12% protein. Include a serving of lean protein with each meal and snack-eggs for breakfast, a turkey sandwich for lunch, low-fat or fat-free yogurt or milk for a snack, and grilled fish and vegetables for dinner.

    4. Skip the sweetener
In a 5-week study by Purdue University researchers, rats given unlimited access to artificially sweetened yogurt consumed more calories, gained more weight, and packed on more fat than those that ate sugar-sweetened yogurt. Researchers believe artificial sweeteners may hinder your body's ability to regulate calories based on taste, so you end up overeating. Go with a little bit of natural sweetener, such as raw sugar or honey, instead.

    Feast on high-energy foods

    5. Dump one high-cal item from your diet
Exercise works best when you don't offset your hard work with empty calories. By eliminating just one high-calorie item from your daily diet, such as a large latte, or substituting cereal and low-fat milk for a bagel and cream cheese, you can easily reduce your intake by 250 calories.

Seriously? "If it tastes good, spit it out!!!" That is completely ridiculous. I cook a lot of really healthy, absolutely delicious meals. Pan seared chicken with herbs and cracked pepper over a bed of grilled, seasoned vegetables, and start it off with an extra yummy salad. If you only like the tastes of "bad" food, you've obviously never taken interest in trying to cook healthy. Sure a lot of bad food tastes good, but so does a lot of good food. Losing weight starts with your mind set. You have to be determined enough to change the things that made you fat before you can start your way to a healthier life style. There is no miracle, it's about finding out what works for you.

"if it tastes good, spit it out" is anything but brilliant---what's the point of eating anything if you don't like the taste? You can have healthy and good-tasting together, it just takes a bit of thought and planning.

You need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day and avoid a lot of high calorie foods. These 5 tips are all correct and effective but are part of a much bigger puzzle. Not to mention the work out and fitness aspect that is missin here.

You know, I wish these articles would tell you that you can get protein from plants. Meat is not healthy! It's laden with antibiotics and chemicals. And, the meat industry pollutes the Earth like no other. You can get LOADS of protein from many beans and veggies. 1 cup of black beans has almost 20 grams of protein, without all the fat and cholesterol (we all know how bad that is!) I've lost 30 lbs in 8 months just from cutting meat out of my diet. And I'm completely healthy. Just thought everyone should know that animal products aren't the only way to get protein. Google it. Vegetarians are healthier and live longer than meat eaters. Even cutting meat from your diet once a week will make a huge difference, just ask my hubby (:

Despite what one may think, losing weight is not a mysterious process. In fact, weight loss does not even have to involve strange diets, special exercises or even the 'magic' of pills or fitness gadgets.

Eat sensibly, vigorously exercize daily, and have diet drinks if you like (forget tip #4)...plus, drink a lot of water. Personally, I don't like the sugary sodas. They give me a heartburn. I agree with the other four tips. I've lost 35 pounds in the last 5 months.

Go Vegan as many natural body builders and athletes, drs and dieticians. You can get all you need without all the crap and torturing animals in sick factory farms, look up videos!

Eating fruit wont just make you lose weight. If you don't do anything those carbs turn into stored fat. Exercise. Parents, if your kids got obesity at a young age, get them on their feet and have them become more active.

develope all blinding denial like really big black women have. they think they look sexy and have it all going on until they have a massive heart attack. just enjoy "life in the extra big, fat and happy lane." it helps if you narrow your focus on crazy hair colors and weaves. it keeps you from looking down and seeing how absurdly huge your body is.

EAT IN MODERATION, EAT DESSERT SLOWLY AND SAVOR IT, ADD HEALTHER CHOICES YOU ACTUALLY LIKE. ----- WATER, WATER, WATER!! DONT LIKE WATER TRY 1/2 GATORADE AND 1/2 WATER. REMEMBER FIBER, FIBER, FIBER!! TAKE NATURAL FIBER PILL 1-2 TIMES A DAY W/ A MEAL. REMEMBER DIET COKE IS MADE OF CHEMICAL SWEETNER AND STILL TEACHES BODY TO REALLY CRAVE SWEETS IF YOU DRINK MORE THAN ONE A DAY.

Different bodies need different diets. My personalized diet is simply to eat less. I don't cut out any foods, I just simply don't gorge myself at meals and I don't snack.

These suggestions are just that, suggestions, and not hard and fast "rules" as the article's authors claim. When it comes to weight loss, there is no "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone. Different people at different stages of life have different needs. The stuff about artificial sweeteners has been around for 25 years, maybe more. It's long been known that saccharin and other sweeteners like it cause cancer when ingested in large amounts over long periods of time. Aspartame, another sweetener, shouldn't be used by anybody with the inherited disorder called PKU, because it contains phenylalanine. For these writers to say that artificial sweeteners may interfere with dieting is just silly.

The simple fact is that there really is only one sure way to lose weight: Eat less and exercise more, and when you do eat, do so in moderation. And by the way, I eat bagels with LOW FAT cream cheese regularly, because I CAN'T TOLERATE cereal and milk, especially not first thing in the morning. Eating cereal means I will wind up rushing to the bathroom as soon as I get to work, because I'll have a case of the runs from it. I don't limit my breakfast to just a bagel- I have scrambled eggs and fruit with it. I discovered a long time ago that I could not tolerate cereal in the morning- it isn't for everyone. Some of us do have issues with lactose intolerance, including me. I've been moderately intolerant for several years now. I can tolerate milk later in the day, as long as I drink small amounts of it, like say less than half a glass. But I'm not able to handle a big bowl of cereal with it. The biggest way people can remove high fat items from their diets is to cut out junk food like pizza and burgers, and STOP drinking high calorie drinks like sodas and lattes. Quit eating out so much, too- it's amazing how many restaurants have menus which are full of high fat, high calorie choices, but which contain almost nothing that is heart healthy or which will help people who are trying to lose weight. Eating at home means you'll save money, and it also means you can monitor and control what you eat.
