The "Safest" States in the United States

The devastating earthquake and tsunami near Japan have led to renewed interest in the safest places to live. Over the past week, Web searches on "safest countries" and "countries with fewest natural disasters" have more than tripled.

According to a recent article from Slate, the countries of Estonia, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Andorra may be the least likely to suffer a natural disaster. The data comes from the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters.

The records aren't totally complete, but again according to Slate, the centre has "no record of fatal floods, droughts, earthquakes, or severe storms in any of these countries from 1900 to 2009."

Of course not everybody can just up and move to Qatar. For people who want to stay in the United States, there are similar studies on the safest places to live. A company called Sustain Lane found that in 2008, all things considered, Mesa, Arizona, is the safest big city to live. Miami, Florida, with its hurricanes, was found to be the least safe.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency keeps track of the number of declared emergencies in each state. This doesn't exactly equate with least dangerous places to live, but it is interesting to note that since 1953, Rhode Island, Utah, and Wyoming have declared the fewest number of disasters with eight each.

And what of the most "dangerous" places to live? In terms of disasters, Texas has declared the most with 84, followed by California with 77, and Oklahoma with 66.

FEMA's list shouldn't be taken as gospel. As Slate explains, "the data are skewed by the fact that disasters are more likely to be declared in populated areas." Still the agency's numbers are well worth a look.

So, here now for your consideration, the ten states that have declared the fewest natural disasters since 1953. Just remember -- as they say in the stock market, past performance doesn't guarantee future results.

    1. Rhode Island
    2. Utah
    3. Wyoming
    4. District of Columbia
    5. Delaware
    6. Connecticut
    7. South Carolina
    8. Colorado
    9. Nevada
    10. Montana

Norman, Oklahoma is very noisey & dirty. There is a house across from mine, the occupants sell drugs from it. The police did a raid; but they are back selling more drugs. Even when college is out.

I aam a Texan, been here 41 years. What "disasters" are they taking about? The only disaster we have had was letting all of those Katrina "refugees" in. They are the most gut-bucket, thieving, violent poeple on earth!! It's been 5 years already.GO HOME!!!

      1) didn't RI have a huge hurricane in the 30's
      2) Utah doesn't need a disaster, they have Mormons
      3) No one lives in Wyoming
      4) DC is one the most impoverished and criminal cities in the USA
      5) Delaware is too tiny, if they did have a natural disaster I hope it blows away the tollbooths
      6) Connecticut also had a hurricane in the 30's
      7) Hurricanes have happened in S.Carolina
      8) Colorado is too awesome to have a disaster
      9) Most of Nevada is uninhabited desert
      10) No one lives in Montana either

People seriously need to read this article more clearly. No, the District of Columbia is not technically a state, but at the same time this article is not about the qualifications that makes a territory eligible for statehood, so get over it. Also not included in this article are the crime and political corruptions that make a state a disaster. This is about natural disasters and the places that receive the least. Calm down.

Nevada? Every summer most of the state goes up in massive wildfires. These things sometimes make it right into people's backyards before they're contained and a few years back one took out a bunch of Tahoe. Not to mention the air becomes unbreathable. Lived there over the course of several summers, not pleasant. I think I'll pass....

DC is safe as far as disasters are concern and not a bad job market. Thinking of returning because Georgia sucks.

well, number 1,5,6, and 7 will and parts of it completely wiped out if there ever is a sunami on that side of the world. They are just lucky that has never happened!! I will stick to living in Indiana with an occasional Tornado to dodge here and there.

I think I would take Montana and Wyoming off the "Safe" list "The last full-scale eruption of the Yellowstone Supervolcano, the Lava Creek eruption which happened nearly 640,000 years ago,[19] ejected approximately 240 cubic miles (1,000 km3) of rock and dust into the sky"

Corey, the darn thing says the least amount of disasters since 1953! Why are you talking about the 30's? I hate it when people do not read thoroughly before commenting. Plus, Rhode Island actually was in a State of Emergency last year in March because of the rainfall, we had a huge flood. Apparently, with that included we still have the least amount of "natural disasters". I would also like to note that this article is listing the states with the fewest natural disasters, not zero natural disasters. Moron!

MI has a few disasters. Our GOP governor for one. Our budget for another. Our roads in the Spring time, even when the budget is healthy, would be another. Our payouts to those on the dole is another big disaster. Only the roads are acts of God. The other disasters are the product of human stupidity.
