Tiny Baby Set to Head Home

Haydee Ibarra looks at her 14-week-old daughter, Melinda Star Guido, at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011. At birth, Melinda Star Guido tipped the scales at only 9 1/2 ounces, a tad less than the weight of two iPhone 4S. Most babies her size don’t survive, but doctors are preparing to send her home as soon as the end of the month. Melinda is believed to be the second smallest baby to survive in the United States and the third smallest in the world. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)LOS ANGELES (AP) - One of the world's smallest surviving babies is headed home.

Melinda Star Guido weighed only 9 ½ ounces at birth- less than a can of soda. After spending her early months in the neonatal intensive care unit, a team of doctors and nurses will gather Friday to see her off.

Melinda has been growing steadily and gaining weight since she was born premature at 24 weeks in August at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. She is the world's third smallest baby and the second smallest in the U.S.

Now weighing 4½ pounds, doctors said Melinda has made enough progress to be discharged. It's too early to know how she will fare developmentally and physically, but doctors planned to monitor her for the next six years.

Most babies this small don't survive even with advanced medical care. About 7,500 babies are born each year in the United States weighing less than 1 pound, and about 10 percent survive.

A study published in the journal Pediatrics in 2010 found that many survivors have ongoing health and learning concerns. Most also remain short and underweight for their age.

There are some rare success stories. The smallest surviving baby born weighing 9.2 ounces is now a healthy 7-year-old and another who weighed 9.9 ounces at birth is an honors college student studying psychology, according to doctors at Loyola University Medical Center in Illinois where the girls were born.

Soon after birth, Melinda was treated for an eye disorder that's common in premature babies and underwent surgery to close an artery. Melinda's mother, 22-year-old Haydee Ibarra, held her for the first time after the operation in November.

Despite the hurdles, doctors said Melinda was fortunate she did not suffer serious complications such as bleeding in the brain.

Miracles CAN happen. My mother's body spontaneously aborted me when she was only five months pregnant - I was 2 lbs. 4 oz. at birth and dropped down to 1 lb. 6 oz by the next day. They didn't think me or my mom were going to survive and they told her that if I DID survive, I would have all sorts of problems and disabilities. They thought I would end up with Mental Retardation or Cerebral Palsy. I do have a few disabilities: I'm legally blind in my right eye and have double vision as well (called Esotropia), I have Birth Hypoxic Brain Damage so anything that has to do with numbers, math, directions, etc. are difficult for me. I'm also only 4'9 in height, which makes me a great deal smaller than most women my age. When I started school they told my mom I would probably never even graduate.

Now I'm nearly 25 years old, graduated High School with a 3.5 gpa, made a 24 on my ACT the first time taking it without even studying for it, got accepted into the best University in our state directly after high school, have a degree in Court Reporting, and have been happily married for almost two years now. Miracles can certainly happen, and even if these little miracle has difficulties as she grows older, it isn't impossible for her to beat the odds and go on to live a happy and successful life. Good luck to you, little one! xxx

I see a lot of posts saying that this little girl is going to be fine, telling the wonderful stories of micro-premies who are doing great. Congratulations are in order to those children and their parents. Of course we wish the same kind of amazing story for little Melinda. But if their are problems this little girl is still a miracle and destined for great things. When will we as a society stop exclusively celebrating the bright and perfect ones? I have twins who were much larger and way less premature than little Melinda. They were 8 weeks early, weighing 3 lbs 10 oz. and 3 lbs 5 oz. Despite having no major medical issues and having lots of early intervention preschool and therapies they are still delayed at 14 and aren't likely to ever be "normal" and guess what, they are wonderful, beautiful children; valuable just as they are.

I was 3 1/2 pounds at birth, and I had to stay in the hospital for a month before I was sent home. It makes me so happy whenever I hear of premature babies surviving because I beat the odds too.

Back in 1980, I was 6-1/2 months pregnant when my water bag broke and had a cesarian. Sherry Lynn was born at 1.4 oz, but only survived 18 hrs. Back then, babies didn't have a high rate of survival being that small. I am so happy to hear good news and that your baby Melinda made it. Enjoy your family. After having 4 miscarriages, then losing Sherry and another miscarriage. Most women would've given up trying to have a child but I finally was blessed with a health son now graduating on the Deans list at Roosevelt University. Never give up.

My grandmother was born in 1898 at l pound. Her mother kept her in a shoe box in the oven to keep her warm. She lived to be 91 years old.

Best of luck to them. What a great story to hear, my wife and I just lost a baby at 20 weeks, an incredibly difficult thing to go through. This is uplifting to say the least.

That is truly amazing. I remember when my daughter was in the NICU for three months after being born at 26 weeks gestation. I thank the doctors and nurses at Ohio State University Hospital for ensuring the life of my daughter.

My son was born at 28wks and 2 days 1 pound and 15 ounces. He had to be resuscitated at birth and received 2 blood transfusions. HE HAD NO BRAIN BLEEDS!!! He learned all alphabets and sounds at 2 and a half and begin reading by his 3rd birthday. He had speech/language delays. He was not talking and potty trained. He's in regular 3rd grade education classes. Brought home today all A's on report card. God is really good. Have faith and just believe that all things are possible!!!!!!!!
