    Tips...to get good sleep

There's a lot of advice out there about getting good sleep; here are tips that work for me:

    Good habits for good sleep:
    1. Exercise most days, even if it's just to take a walk.
    2. No caffeine after 7:00 p.m.
    3. An hour before bedtime, avoid doing any kind of work that takes alert thinking. Addressing envelopes-okay. Analyzing an article-nope.
    4. Adjust your bedroom temperature to be slightly chilly.
    5. Keep your bedroom dark. Studies show that even the tiny light from a digital alarm clock can disrupt a sleep cycle. We have about six devices in our room that glow bright green; it's like sleeping in a mad scientist's lab. The Big Man's new pet, a Roomba (yes, he loves his robot vacuum), gives out so much light that I have to cover it with a pillow before bed.
    6. Keep the bedroom as tidy as possible. It's not restful to fight through chaos into bed.

    If sleep won't come:
    1. Breathe deeply and slowly until you can't stand it anymore.
    2. If your mind is racing (you're planning a trip, a move, Christmas shopping; you're worried about a medical diagnosis), write down what's on your mind. This technique really works for me.
    3. Slather yourself with body lotion. It feels good and also, if you're having trouble sleeping because you're hot, it cools you down.
    4. If your feet are cold, put on socks.
    5. Stretch your whole body.
    6. Have a warm drink. Some people claim that warm milk contains melatonin and trytophan and so helps induce sleep, but in fact, a glass of milk doesn't contain enough to have any effect. But it's still a soothing drink. My nighttime favorite: 1/3 mug of milk, add boiling water, one packet of Equal, and a dash of vanilla. A real nursery treat.
    7. Yawn.
    8. Stretch your toes up and down several times.
    9. Tell yourself, "I have to get up now." Imagine that you just hit the snooze alarm and in a minute, you're going to be marching through the morning routine. Often this is an exhausting enough prospect to make me fall asleep.

    Re-frame:
Re-frame your sleeplessness as a welcome opportunity to snatch some extra time out of your day. I get up and tackle mundane chores, like paying bills, organizing books, or tidying up. Then I start the day with a wonderful feeling of having accomplished something even before 6:45 am.

Not getting enough sleep can lead to increased stress levels that over time can deplete the body of needed nutrients and vitamins. This can have a negative effect on overall health.

How do you handle and live with a spouses parents. That are control types, don,t care how they insult you, never apoligize, yet they sit in church thinking they are so religous, etc. I have been slandered, libeled and over all had my good name deprocated, without feelings for myself or others. I,ve tolerated this for about 33 years and my home town priest and nonsenior priest have recomended to avoid them. But, there are holidays and funerals and etc., and I have a severe, debilitating physical problem. Thru no fault of my own and my wife is afraid of herown parents and just plays along and tries to accept them. We both pray for them and try, try but, some how they fabricate things and you know how they will abuse you and others to the max. It is like a couple of playground bullies, that are know it alls. My wife and I avoid things and my wife is afraid to say anything as it will get them going is her favorite saying. Yes we have been to the priest and phycoligest etc, but nothing help. They just seem to be evil and have the major industry in town. My wife has told me how her father would have them all pull down thier clothing and her father would whip them with a belt. I wish I.d known some of the thing they have done earlier in life I'd would hwve brought them in front of a judge to face themselves and get the behavior help they need. Do you have any suggestions for a coupe of EVIL minded inlaws? No Name please, thank You1

      Also:

      1. Use the bedroom only for sleep or sex. Don't play on your laptop in bed or do your bills or taxes. That way when you see your bed you think of sleep.

      2. If you are lying in bed and your mind's going a million miles a minute instead of driving yourself crazy, turn on a small soft reading lamp and read a few pages of something light and mindless until you get your mind off of whatever's bothering you. That usually helps people relax enough to drift off.

      Debbie,

      Thank you for your reply.

Like I stated in my comment, I have Restless Leg Syndrome. When I started with a new doctor in 2003, I told her about my leg problem (at that time I had never heard of the Restless Leg Syndrome - RLS) and she didn't mention it. She gave me a prescription for Quinine tablets. I didn't even know that they used Quinine anymore. I had the prescription filled and at the time I was living in a small town, the pharmacy didn't give print-outs of info on side effects, so I usually checked on WebMD for that info. When I got the Quinine tablets I was busy and didn't look up the info. After 3 nights of taking the tablets, I went to bed one night and noticed a faint noise in my ear. I awoke the next morning and forgot about the noise as I wasn't hearing it anymore. The next night the same thing only the noise was a bit louder, it was more like cricketts chirping.

The next day the noise was still there, I checked out WebMD and sure enough one of the side effects of Quinine could be tinnitus. I immediately quit taking it and called my doctor who told me to discontinue it.

She then sent me to a hearing specialist. They tested my hearing and said that I hadn't lost any hearing, it was just that with the tinnitus I'm not able to hear as clearly due to the noise. I was told nothing could be done for it, but to wear ear plugs when I am in a noisy environment. I had my hearing checked in 2005 or 2006 and it was a bit worse but not much. I sure wish there was a cure. I was told when I have a cold, the noise is louder, which is true. It was suggested that I always have some background noise, so I either have the tv or music playing real low as it helps drown out some of the ear noise.

I had a warm cup of milk with a bit of sugar (out of honey) and some vanilla and took the Trazodone tablets then I got in bed at 11:30 and was still awake at midnight, so decided to get back up for a bit. ha! Four nights in a row I have gotten about 6 hours of sleep, so I've been tired. I do better with 8 hours of sleep.

Last fall I read somewhere that to see how much sleep a person needs, go to bed at the same time every night for 3 nights, see how much sleep you get and that is what you need. I went to bed at 11 p.m. for 3 nights and surprisingly went to sleep in about 10-15 minutes all 3 nights. I averaged about 8 hours of sleep for those 3 nights.

All the comments and suggestions have been interesting, insightful and funny.

I agree with others about the Equal. I never was much on artificial sweeteners but used them or drank a diet soda every so often starting in the early 1990's. Back then I wondered what the long term effect was on the human body using that stuff. Around 2005-2006 I quit using all artificial sweeteners and also no-fat and low-fat foods. I eat butter in moderation, drink skim milk and eat sugar in moderation along with honey and steveia. From 2006 to 2008 I lost 40 lbs.

Do a search for "Sweet Misery" on the internet and watch the computer video on the bad effects of aspartame (aka Equal, Nutrasweet).

      SO TRUE!
      9. Tell yourself, “I have to get up now.” Imagine that you just hit the snooze alarm and in a minute, you’re going to be marching through the morning routine. Often this is an exhausting enough prospect to make me fall asleep.

If all things above doesn't help at all, then maybe time to check whether you had sleep apnea. It's a home-based overnight sleep investigation...you may check it at fb: search home sleep study.

I read until I do not understand anything any more.To follow the same sleep pattern is very important, that means if you are a born night owl, do not go to bed at 9 pm.

These really are good tips, but if you suffer from flat out insomnia and not the occasional "sleeplessness" then meds/psychologist is the solution.

A good shower at night and reading novel on bed makes me sleep well. It has helped me alot when sleep won't come.

Be on a relax position, close you eyes and start imagining horses jumping one by one and start counting from 1-2-3-onwards...it really works...
