Top Ten Habits for Good Skin, Health & Beauty

As mentioned in Skin, Health & Beauty Basics, maintaining and even improving your health and beauty starts with changing your habits. It is never too early or too late to make some changes to your daily routines and habits that will bring about positive changes in your appearance and overall health.

Top Ten Habits for Good Skin, Health & Beauty

1. Eat Healthy Foods

Your grandma told you, your mother told you, all the health and beauty magazines tell you to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, yet how many people still eat fast foods, canned foods, and instant dinners? Yes, they are quick, easy, and often tasty, but they are lacking in the vitamins, minerals and fiber our bodies and skin need to help keep us healthy and vibrant looking.

2. Drink Plenty of Water

While studies are inconclusive on how much water we need, water flushes our kidneys, helps prevent kidney stones, hydrates our bodies and skin, and possible even helps hydrate and plump the skin. Drinking water before a meal can help us feel fuller and help cut down on food consumption. Water is calorie and fat free, too!

3. Drink Fewer Soft Drinks & Alcoholic Beverages

Another advantage of drinking plenty of water is replacing some of the more harmful beverages we drink and cutting back on coffee, Cokes, and beers. Too much caffeine, sugar and alcohol is very detrimental to our health.

4. Exercise More

Again, studies are somewhat conflicting on how much exercise we need each week, but almost everyone agrees we are NOT getting enough exercise. Exercise does so much for the body. It helps our blood circulate oxygen and nutrient rich blood to our skin, other organs and the brain. It helps with sleep and digestion, improves heart and lung capacity, and is important in weight loss and muscle building.

Estimates on how much exercise we need ranges from 10,000 steps a day, to 30 to 60 minutes of exercise five days a week. If you have been a couch potato, be sure to consult your doctor before jumping in to a heavy workout schedule.

5. Reduce Sun Exposure

Practice safe sun with some simple precautions. Wear a hat regardless of the season. Find a good sunscreen that not only blocks the sun, but also moisturizes and nourishes the skin.

6. Don't Smoke

Smoking is one of the worst thing you can do to your body and to your skin. Smoking causes cancer; it also causes wrinkles and loss of skin texture. If you are already a smoker, find the will power to quit.

7. Avoid Stress

Stress releases stress hormones into the body which have a negative effect on our health. Stress also leads to lack of sleep, which in turn robs the body of its chance to heal at night. Stress can also cause rosacea, rashes and redness; acne and blemishes; and dark circles under the eyes.

8. Get Plenty of Sleep

Get eight hours of sleep each night. While some people do fine on seven hours of sleep, most of us need a full eight hours to give our bodies time to heal themselves effectively.

9. Floss Daily

Brush your teeth and floss regularly. Not only will your teeth and smile look better, but regular flossing has been linked to reduced incidence of heart disease.

10. Get Regular Checkups

Get regular physical, dental and dermatologist check ups. Remember, prevention is the best cure.
