    UTI Remedies: What Really Works

Can cranberry juice cure your UTI?Can cranberry juice cure your UTI?Painful, burning urination, exhaustion and discomfort? Join the club. Urinary tract infections are responsible for nearly 8.3 million doctor visits every year, making them the second most common type of infection in the body.

They occur when bacteria and other tiny organisms, often from the digestive tract, grab hold of the walls of the urethra and multiply. If you wait long enough to treat the infection, the bacteria can travel up the urinary tract to the bladder and kidneys. Although more common in women, UTIs can also happen in men.

Unfortunately, busy schedules can keep people from obtaining antibiotics for a few days, allowing the infection to worsen. In addition, the CDC estimated in early 2010 that nearly 60 million Americans lack health insurance, meaning that even though UTIs can be fought with widely available antibiotics, the infections can be expensive to cure because of uncovered doctor visits and prescription costs. Home remedies abound when it comes to preventing and treating UTIs, but it is often hard to separate the scientific fact from fiction. Here's a guide to the everyday, affordable materials that have been scientifically proven to prevent and shorten these painful infections.

QUIZ: How Healthy Do You Feel?

Since then, numerous studies have supported cranberry's ability to thwart infections and cranberry-based supplements, such as Ellura, have been developed for people with recurrent UTIs.Cranberries have been recommended for the prevention and treatment of UTIs for more than a century, but until the past few decades, the claim had no scientific basis. In 1994, a clinical study published in JAMA showed that cranberry juice may in fact help prevent UTIs. Later studies showed the effect is due to compounds found in cranberries-including proanthocyanidins-which prevent E. coli from grabbing onto the walls of the urethra, thereby inhibiting the build up of bacteria that cause UTIs.

Research has also hinted that 100 percent cranberry juice can shorten the length of, and possibly treat, non-aggressive infections. "Overall, cranberry is a superstar in terms of how it affects the bladder system," says YouBeauty Integrative Health Expert Jim Nicolai, M.D., the medical director of the Andrew Weil, M.D. Integrative Wellness Program at Miraval.

Earlier this year, however, scientists at the University of Michigan published findings that cranberry juice fails to prevent recurrent UTIs-throwing the medical and scientific communities back into a debate about the berry's benefits.

    Uva-Ursi

Uva-ursi, a shrub found in mountainous areas of North America, contains several chemicals with antiseptic properties, including arbutoside, which becomes a form of hydroquinone as it passes through the bladder system and helps fight infection, a fact that Native Americans realized centuries ago. On the down side, however, uva-ursi can be toxic. Hydroquinone is potentially carcinogenic and has been shown to cause liver damage in large quantities and as a result, doctors are cautious in suggesting the herb for extended use.

    Goldenseal

While perhaps most popular for the rumor that it can mask drug use during urine tests (and the research is inconclusive on that), this herb contains the compound berberine, which can prevent bacteria from sticking to the walls of urethra, similar to the proanthocyanidins in cranberries. Scientists and doctors agree, however, that more research needs to be done before the plant can be deemed a verified UTI preventative measure or treatment.

    Other Options

Some of the most popular alternative choices to the treatments discussed above include:

    - Echinacea, an immune system stimulant with antibiotic and antioxidant effects that may help fight early UTIs

    - Baking soda taken with water, which can supposedly neutralize acidic urine and ease pain and symptoms, though evidence is limited

    - Vitamin C, which acidifies the urine and inhibits the growth of bacteria.

Nicolai also says that simple measures such as limiting coffee, alcohol and white flour intake, as well as staying well hydrated and urinating before and after intercourse to cleanse the urethra of bacteria can keep your bladder system healthy, lowering any chance of a UTI to begin with.

I found taking a probiotic helps me a lot. When I was pregnant with my second son I had an UTI constanatly along with a yeast infection. After I had him, I went on a probiotic and cranberry pills. It took a little while, but eventually both cleared up. I suggest drinking a lot of water as well.

When I was pregnant I had a ketone level the whole time. Which is a sign that I have a UTI although I felt fine. Until the end of my pregnancy when I was put on antibiotics twice. Cranberry juice did nothing but make me go to the bathroom.

Some cranberry juice is actually cranberry cocktail which contains very little actual cranberry juice and tons of sugar. The only cranberry juice that's ever worked for me was the pure 100% cranberry juice with no sugar that you get at the health food store. Of course you can only drink about a shot of it at a time....it's so sour your mouth will feel like it's caving in on itself.

Cranberry juice is actually a bladder irritant, so you may end up doing more harm than good. I used to get UTIs a lot. Then I started drinking way more water, and hence, going to the bathroom more often. Works like magic.

I've found mint tea to be helpful for me as far as keeping UTI at bay whenever I feel like I might have one coming on. Mint seems to have antibacterial properties, but by no means have I thoroughly researched that--just my mom's word on this. I get dried mint leaves from an Asian grocery store, but fresh mint leaves can work, too, though it can get expensive if you don't grow your own.

What good is salt that has lost it’s savor? I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob thus says the Lord Jesus Christ. GOD IS NOT WILLING THAT ANY SHOULD PERISH, BUT THAT ALL MIGHT BELIEVE ON HIS NAME-JESUS. Repent & be baptized! Jesus said, “I am God there is none besides me." "I am the Way, the Truth & the Life. No man comes to the Father except by me." "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." "As many as received Him to them He gave the power to become the sons of God the Father even to those who believe on His name." Jesus' healing ministry began with adult baptism. Jesus says, “In this world you shall have trouble, but I have overcome the world.” Jesus says, “If we confess our sins He is faithful & just to forgive us our sins & to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

I've found that drinking copious amounts of water along with apple cider vinegar can cure any UTI.

Just wash yourself with clean water after urinating and defecating. This prevents UTI (and also odor). UTI is a rare condition in Muslims because they wash themselves after toilette. Using toilette paper is a very bad idea. It leads the stool to your urethra.

I wish I could send you a bidet dear Cranberry lips. I hope you can find one wherever you live. Once I couldn't find one when I had moved to a new place, I had to use a pitcher for a while! It was difficult to use. Maybe a watering-kettle (I don't know the exact name. I mean the thing that you use to water your flowers) is a better idea! Also you can arrange to have a faucet (with a long hose attached to it) next to your toilet. This is what we have in our house now :) easy to use, clean always!

Thanks for the thought, Aisa. :) I don't have issues with UTI's, but I like the clean feeling a bidet provides. :) When my husband and I buy a house, I will definitely have one installed.

The University of Michigan study used Ocean Spray cranberry juice, which is not 100% cranberry juice and contains a ton of sugar. Show me a study that used 100% cranberry juice.

Aisa, feel free to send me a bidet. I've been wanting one for a long time. :)

It doesn't have to be 100% but it does need to have a good amount of "real juice" in it. I want to say I've used some that were in the 30% range that still helped. I'm sure it depends on the person and the sugar content as well though.
      • Cranberry Lips 6 months ago
The more real juice, the less you have to drink. Docs recommend 8oz of 100% cranberry juice a day. If your juice is 30%, you would have to drink 24oz or more. If it has a lot of sugar, the calories will add up.

In my experience, besides antibiotics, the best remedy is drinking at least 2 liters of liquids - preferably water and cranberry juice. The faster you drink up, the sooner you'll feel relief. Keep drinking lots of liquids for the next few days.
For prevention - personal hygiene, using the bathroom after sex, and again, drinking plenty of water daily.
