What happens to your body after you drink a soda every day, for a long time

ThinkstockThinkstockSugar rushes and caffeine highs followed by a depressing energy crash are what happens to your body if you drink a soda right now, but plenty of Blisstree readers actually seem to be okay with that. Some of you think it's alarmist to compare a caffeine and sugar rush to doing drugs, and some just don't really care about the slump they'll find themselves in after drinking 39 grams of sugar, but what makes us really worried about a soda-slurping habit is what happens over the long term.

Here's a quick snapshot of you, in a few years, after drinking soda on a regular basis:

You'll Be Fatter: According to research in the Nurse's Health Study, which monitored the health of 90,000 women for eight years, drinking a single soda every day of the week added 10 pounds over a four-year period.

You'll Probably Have Diabetes: In the Nurses' Health Study, women who said they drank one or more servings a day of a sugar-sweetened soft drink or fruit punch were twice as likely to have developed type 2 diabetes during the study than those who rarely consumed these beverages.

You're Much More Likely to Develop Heart Disease: According to a study published in 2007 in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association, subjects who drank a soda every day over a four-year period had a 25% chance of developing high blood sugar levels and a 32% greater chance of developing lower "good" cholesterol levels. The Nurses' Health Study found that women who drank more than two sugary beverages per day had a 40% higher risk of heart attacks or death from heart disease than women who rarely drank sugary beverages.

You're Probably Also Less Healthy In Other Ways: Several studies, including the 2007 study published in Circulation, suggest that diet sodas have some of the same effects on health as regular sodas, despite having none or very little of the sugar. Why? Drinking soda is typically part of an overall lifestyle that's not very healthy: We know you don't like us to compare drinking caffeine and sugar to substance abuse, but when it comes to your lifestyle, some think that soda is just like a gateway drug.

Yeah, but what if I quit smoking cigarettes and weed. I smoked weed everyday for a couple years which gave me a big appetite, but I eat way less now, and I drink a Cactus Cooler every morning instead of monster energy or coffee. How about that??????

Being a Physical Education Tutor, the course I studied at the University of Dar es Salaam the known as PESC, I really understand that eating too much sugar without exercises is harmful to our health and our bodies in general. Some important issue to bear in mind is the quantity we get and frequency we use to take in exercising.I agree that, taking soda daily is not the sign of wealth, but creating future problems. The only way of escaping such disaster is to look other kind of food which is safer so that we can live longer.

Great publishing. I recently gave up soda a little over two months ago. Not only have I lost 15 pounds, but I feel so much healthier. Once I gave up the soda, it became much easier to make other healthy changes.

i drink nearly 6 liters of soda every week, ive been doing so for a few years now, i also eat extremely fatty foods like pizza and things from fast food restaurants for the majority of my meals, yet i have a completely healthy body, i may be a bit chubby but im also very tall and i pretty much never exercise. maybe im just really lucky :P

Just because you can't see it on the outside, doesn't mean it is not affecting you on the inside. If one can of soda a day adds a decent elevation in risk, drinking close to a liter a day, the risk will be much worse. It will catch up to you when you get a little bit older, unless you die soon. You have the appearance of a healthy body, but thats probably all, especially if you never exercise. All the plaque build up from the fatty foods also increase your chances of heart disease.I like to thank people like you who keep people in the health care profession(like me) in business and not having to worry about running out of patients.

I have known for many years that soda was not healthy. I think I is high time that they put warning sign on soda bottle so that consumers can know that if they continue drinking sodas they are more likely to get diabetes. I have lost 12 pounds just from simple stop consuming any form of drink that has sugar.

There`s an experiment using coke and nails, put the nails in a glass of coke and see what it does to them, they disolve!!!!! So, imagine what it does to your body. Post something about smokin' habit.

I am a very healthy person that drinks coke everyday. I am 68 years old and I do not see any more of a problem with me drinking coca cola than a person drinking sweet tea or coffee.

what about home brewed black pekot tea sweetened with cane sugar? It taste like a better choice, but I know theres still the sugar and the caffiene content. I'd like to get your opinion. Is there anything besides water?

Soda is terrible , I done figure you will be healthier & happier if you drink 6-7 glasses of (light) Cranberry juice mixed w/ ice & half Vodka. Some people do not like the taste of Cranberry juice so I suggest you should try adding more ice. These hot days you can never get enough. :)

I was a great fan of coke, but I recently severe warmth inside my stomach, and I paid a visit to a doctor, he told that there was too much gas in me. He added I had to stop drinking coke due to its content of acids. I gave up drinking it and I am already now.
