Every Valentine's Day, your husband buys you a big box of fancy chocolates. This year, you're dieting and watching your weight. What do you do?
1) Accept the gift, but make a point of sharing it with coworkers or friends.
2) Tell him in advance that you'd rather he give you flowers.
3) Eat the chocolates, even if it's just one a day for the rest of the month.
Correct answer: (2) If you're committed to losing weight, tell your husband before the holiday to skip the candy. First, let him know how much you appreciate his thoughtfulness. Then say, "Unfortunately, I love the chocolates so much that I'm afraid I'll eat them all, which would totally undo my efforts!" Suggest that something more diet-friendly - say, flowers - would be better. Don't skirt the issue by accepting his gift and passing it on; you might hurt his feelings.
But what would you do? When he gave you chocolates last Valentine's Day, did you take them to work, throw them out, or forget the diet and eat them?
