Why a personal trainer is making himself obese… on purpose

Normally, I share weight loss success stories - WooHoos!, as they're known at FatFighterTV. But today, I want to tell you about the opposite - a fit guy who is deliberately making himself fat.

Since May, Drew Manning has gained about 70 pounds on purpose. And he's not done yet.

Drew is a personal trainer and has always been the "fit guy." He's now on a journey he calls Fit 2 Fat 2 Fit where he spends six months (he has about 4 weeks left) eating unhealthy food and not exercising, then he will take six more months to get fit again. Why? To experience for himself what it's like to be overweight, how tough it is to lose weight, and ultimately show others how to get fit. But this is sooo extreme! And I hate that Drew is deliberately making himself unhealthy. I asked him all about it…

FatFighterTV: As someone who has always been fit, how can you stand doing this to yourself?

Drew Manning: It's been very tough physically, mentally and emotionally to let myself go like this. The first couple of months were the hardest. I felt like I was going through withdrawals, just like any other addiction. I was jealous seeing people running, going to the gym, and being in shape.

FFTV: Are you concerned about your health?

DM: Yes, definitely. With a BP reading of 161/113 you can't NOT be concerned. I haven't felt in danger yet, but I still have 4 weeks left to go. People tell me all the time to stop now, but I look at it like this…..if others can live years with these unhealthy risk factors, like high BP, glucose levels, cholesterol levels, triglycerides, etc. then I can last another 4 weeks. Plus I want to show people how living a healthy lifestyle can change all of those risk factors.

FFTV: Are you enjoying eating all those unhealthy foods?

DM: Yes and no. To some extent, all of these foods that I'm eating (sugary cereals, granola bars, juices, white breads, white pastas, sodas, crackers, chips, frozen dinners, mac n cheese, etc.) taste delicious. But then I feel like crap later on and I get hungry again and crave those same foods.

FFTV: You've gained about 70 pounds now since May - how do you feel?

DM: I'm to the point where I feel lethargic and uncomfortable. I definitely feel "addicted" to these foods. In the beginning, I did not like soda, but now I can't go a day without, otherwise I'll get the headaches, bad mood, etc. Emotionally, it's taken a toll on my confidence level, even in my marriage. I don't like the way I look in public; nothing fits right; bending over to tie my shoes or clip my toe nails has become so difficult. I've definitely taken those things for granted.

FFTV: You mentioned that you want to gain an understanding of how hard it is to be overweight - what have you learned so far?

DM: I think the biggest thing I've learned is how intense and how real these food cravings are. I think a lot of people associate the word "addiction" with drugs and alcohol, but I do believe this addiction (to America's processed foods) is real and very similar. I know I'll never know exactly what it's like for every person that's overweight and I don't claim to, but at least I understand better than I did before when I never had to struggle with this. I hope to learn a lot more in the second half of my journey, from fat 2 fit.

I really hope Drew makes it through all this okay. You can follow his journey here.

Its a hard journey and worth the effort to show how people can change their bodies and make a huge difference health + looking wise. I look forward to seeing the end reults when you get to the point of starting the decline back down and show how easy it is to get in great shape again ...... good luck

I'm sure this is quite difficult. But I think it's wonderful that the empathy for others will grow as well as the proof that, with determination, it doesn't take too long to get back into shape and form good habits again.

Seems like a very short time to gain so much weight, and looking to take the weight off in the same time frame seems very dangerous to me. I'm not a big fan of this at all, and I hope he comes through it without destroying his insides.
    • Hey you  •  7 months ago
He's an idiot. If he knows ANYTHING about the human anatomy and physiology, he would know that once you get "fat cells" they never, ever, ever, ever go away. They'll shrink, but they do not disappear. Let me repeat: your fat cells NEVER go away. This is why it is so easy to gain weight, and not lose it. It's best never to be overweight, especially if you can help it--period. Oh well, he'll learn the hard way; in about ten years or so. What a knuckle dragger.

The first sentence to your comment, how ironic.

As an adult you DO NOT create or destroy fat cells. You gain weight and lose weight by making them smaller or larger. The amount of fat cells you have as an adult is largely influenced throughout childhood and will remain relatively stable throughout your adult life.

        aAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA AHAHAHAHAHA MY SIDES AHAHAHHAHAHHHAHHAAHH.
Hey You, provide a source you your bullsh1ttery. That's brutally wrong, all cells die. Think with your awfully educated mind, if cells could never disappear you would never die, unless it was damaged by an external source.
That was the sh1ttiest broscience I've ever heard.
He's not an idiot, you're an idiot. You know nothing.
        I'm donehere.

Actually, you are both correct really. On the whole, after your body has been through puberty, you do not create or destroy any fat cells in your body, the fat cells just expand and contract depending on how much fat you have in your diet. So in this instance Jose is correct! Occasionally your body can 'grow' more fat cells, this will only happen if you eat excessively and gain a lot of weight. The only way a body can get rid of fat cells with liposuction so if you have gained an excessive amount of weight and your body has made more fat cells then your body will not be able to get rid of those (without liposuction) but they can be shrunk with diet and exercise. So both of you were correct in a way but I don't think there was any need for Marcos response !!!!! Only my opinion guys x

Wow. He's proved that if you don't move at all and eat all processed foods without moderation you gain weight. What a genius. Of course all this will prove is that someone who has already proven to have the type of body that responds to diet and exercise... will respond to diet and exercise. I am floored the by significance. T is to say about how people still believe hat just because that's how their body might work that it means that how every body will work.

I, for one, can't wait to see if this guy's body won't take the change very well and suddenly eating well and exercise doesn't do a single thing. Then he caN truly feel what it's like to be fat and have everyone assume you're a lazy, slovenly, disgusting mess.

    • Victoria  •  7 months ago
Oh my. That is so not healthy and it will be hard to take it off. I've heard many stories from stars who gained weight for a part and had trouble going back to eating right.

People are still making excuses...Really? Like its going to be so much easier for him...Yes he has lived a healthy lifestyle before but like he said and I believe...he's addicted to sugar and processed and fried foods...it is real. It is going to be a struggle for him to break the addiction and lose the weight. I think most people at some time or another in there life...yes, even overweight ones, have lived a somewhat healthy lifestyle at some point in their lives or have played a sport or something!!!

I think he will bounce back without a problem because he and his body have a muscle memory and a set point he wants to get back to as an always fit momentarily fat person. It is a lot harder when your body's set point was always at the 60-70 lb heavier mark and you have to fight to get fit and then maintain and not slowly lose ground as the years go by.

Don't they say losing it is the easy part, but maintaining the loss for 5 years or more the killer battle?

Not to say this guy wants to stay fat for a long time but if he claims it is wasy and anyone can do it then I would like to bop him one. I have lost about 50 lbs and it is not easy to maintain if, like me you have been fat since 3rd grade!

Sound strange but I have done the same thing, though I didn't go as far as 70 pounds. I wanted to feel the effect of how it was to be over 200 lbs. I made it to 210, and being in the military at the time I was restricted to a curtain weight limits. I did it challenge to myself and learn what type of negative changes my body would experience. Once my knees started to become sore I knew it was time to stop. Throughout the whole ordeal I still exercised, lifted weights and ran.

I Just Hope He Can In Fact Climb Out Of His Addiction To The Goodies......Fought With Them All My Life.....61 Years Old And No Doubt Have Lost 2,500 LBs Or More...That's Right 2,500 LBs.
People Without Food Addiction Think We Are Full Of #$%@ .....Well..Actually We Are (Ha! Ha!) But It Is 100 Times Harder To Give Up Food Addiction And Stay Abstinant Than Any Other Addiction On This Planet.
I Gave Up Smoking 3 Plus Packs A Day....Never Went Back.....1990....Gave Up Beer ...Clean 7 Months ...No Desire To Start Either One Back......Why....Addictive Drugs And Alcohol Are Substances You Can Remove From Your Life 100%......ZERO Use Required....Don't Touch Fire ..Don't Get Burned.
Food However Is A Necessity To Survive......Every Day ...Every Way...You Are Tempted
And The Slightest Slip....Puts You Back In The Food.
Example.....Wife Makes Chicken Cachactorie......Late From Work...Not Time To Do From Scratch And Uses A Sauce From A Jar...Even Healthy Jar......2nd Or 3rd Ingredient Is Some Kind Of Sugar/Starch......Harmless???...No Way....Just Like The Crack Head Smoking A Draw Of Someone Elses Rock......It's Over....You Are Back In The Drug/Food And Don't Even Realize It Yet.
The 4 White Posions ......They Are Hidden Everywhere
Sugar...Salt....Suet....Starch.......!!!! Strange Aint' It That They Also Are Snow White Like Cocaine.
I Currently Am Fighting The Poisions, The 4.....And Winning But I Know I Could Be Knocked Off My Horse Any Minute....Not Even Knowing It....Anyway....I Am Glad I Got To Vent This Morning And Am Wishing The Guy Good Luck With His Endeavor......I Do Know This!!!
ONCE AN ADDICT ALWAYS AN ADDICT.......ACTIVE OR ENACTIVE

The key to being fat is sugar. So if you can keep your blood sugar at a certain level your metabolism will burn your fat off all the time. If your blood sugar level is to high you store fat in un wanted areas of your body. And what ever exersize you do will help burns fat faster that is if you blood sugar level is at the right level. There are foods that you think are healthy that make natural sugar. Thats the food you want to stop eating. Think of all the exersize your doing to loose weight its all useless because do to your sugar your injesting will take for ever to loose weight. A friend of mine lost 206 lbs just under a year just by changing his diet. If your wondering what he ate i can tell you. He ate just plane hotdogs no bun just plane hotdogs nothing on them and drink plenty of water. He said he would drink a diet soda when he was feeling weak from time to time. He exersized by walking and doing yard work. Yes brunch , lunch, and dinner ( Nothing else just plane hotdogs). There is to many types of food to list that prduce sugar when injested yes feeling mantic if you are your getting fatter. Any one can loose weight it just depends on how fast you want to loose it. List your foods that you eat and look them up you have a computer. stop eating sugar there is some cooking oils that produce lots of sugar. You got to make your mind up and eat right.

Drew is risking his life to do something like this. The obese have live with unhealthy body for years, he hasn't. The shock to his body will definitely cause some serious problems later. But good luck Drew.

This is common.. Thats why you see all the advertising for supplements/books/gimics etc..they get a fit guy (you don't see this) pay him to gain weight.. get fat.. take miracle supplements and .. OMG.. get ripped.. muscle memory/knowledge/food/genetics/hard work.. deceiving .. but we all see what we want to believe. Easy market.

I applaud him for his intent. But two things bother me. 1) It is a known fact that men lose weight faster then women 2) age plays a factor that i never would have dreamed when i was 25. Vs the reality of 45. I have never had a child so i can't consider that a factor. But i am 45 and work out. I can gurantee the weight he gains in 6 months would take alot longer to take off if he were a wonan of any age.
