Saw that new research that says you don't need to go to the doctor every year for a checkup? Disregard that.

A little background: A study of 183,00 people in the U.S. and Europe found that healthy people who regularly visit the doctor for checkups were just as likely to die over the study's nine-year period as people who didn't get checkups. So, people concluded that there's no need to get an annual physical.

Hold the phone, says Cosmo Radio women's health expert Jennifer Wider, MD. It's important for you to get regular physicals from your doctor because some serious health problems can develop out of nowhere-and early detection is key to making sure you're okay. Think: Melanoma, high cholesterol, etc.

And going to the doc when you're sick doesn't cut it because the focus is on the particular problem you're having, not your overall health. You need a legit physical where your doctor checks things out-while you're feeling healthy.

Dr. Wider points out that studies have shown that women who go to their docs for annual screenings and visits are healthier. They also eat and sleep better and exercise more.

So, if it's been, oh, forever since your last checkup, it's time to make an appointment.
