Would you wear Spanx to the gym?

Spanx takes on activewear. Photo by SpanxSpanx takes on activewear. Photo by SpanxSpanx used to be a taboo garment you wore on special occasions under a dress to smooth out your lumps and bumps, but ever since celebrities admitted to wearing them the shapewear industry has taken off. It is now worth a whopping $812.5 billion.

There are shapewear items for thighs, hips, butts, bellies, legs, arms, and even men's packages (seriously). There are special maternity Spanx and Spanx for swimming. Two "Real Housewives of New York" stars even have their own shapewear lines-Jill Zarin's Skweeze Couture and Bethenny Frankel's Skinnygirl Smoothers n' Shapers.

The latest from Spanx is activewear, which comes in the form of leggings, bike shorts, wrap skirts, yoga pants, tanks, and even socks that "support your arch and keep your feet cool." They range from an XS to an XL. We're sure there are Spanx devotees who will be wild about the new shapewear, but we have a few issues with Spanx gym clothes:

    • First, the slogan: "Super comfortable, super effective." Effective at what exactly? Making you look like you've worked out more than you really have?
    • The description: "Your new favorite work out and about pants feature a SPANX-Exclusive, the
Slim-X® Bagel-Buster!" So don't worry if you eat a bagel before your workout-no one will be able to tell (except maybe your body).
    • Spanx aren't very comfortable and may hinder movement and flexibility.
    • We like seeing our soft spots jiggle around when working out-it's incentive to target these areas and push ourselves that much harder!
    • On that note, people wear Spanx as a quick fix to look leaner. Some may not feel the need to exercise as much when wearing garments that suck them in.
    • They're extremely tight and not very breathable. Not good for sweating, and you'll have to wash them a lot.
    • They're expensive. $68 for shorts or tanks, and $118 for pants.

What do you think? Would you consider wearing Spanx products to the gym?

I don't know about Spanx themselves but I definitely want something that reduces the jiggle. I don't want all that jiggle going on when I work out. It's embarrassing and makes me less inclined to go to the gym.

I wouldn't wear regular spanx to the gym. I reckon that would get quite gross. But I do prefer tighter workout clothing, at least pants. It's just more comfortable to me. And they are more durable and maybe even remind you to stand up straight and tighten your muscles while working out. This really is no different than some workout clothing all ready out there. I find regular cotton yoga pants can wear out quickly, and even stretch out and you have to buy smaller sizes or keep pulling them up while you work out. So, yeah I'd try these. There are pants by Reebok or Fila that smooth certain areas of your thighs. I so want those.

I think those who wear them to the gym aren't really working out anyway. Thats why they are "Super comfortable, super effective", you're not doing anything in them.

      Not for that price.

I would not wear these things to the gym. However I would wear compression garments during and endurance race for the simple reason that compression wear reduce the"jiggle" factor hence reduce muscle fatigue (but then again we are talking about endurance training)...Compression garment are not the same as Spanx.

Well, I don't know if they are exactly Spanx, but I wear spandex shorts under my PT uniform for the military, because it just feels better when I am running

If you go to the gym and still need to use Spanx, then sorry to say, but it's not working for you.

Never thought about it. Love my Spanx. I think I'll try it. Let cha' know later.

I've never worn one yet, although to the gym? I don't think it would let the skin breath away all that sweat.

Well, my favorite workout pants at the moment are UnderArmour HeatGear Compression Capri's - Yes, COMPRESSION. Compression gear has been around for years and I like the tautness I feel when wearing it. I understand that some girls like to see the jiggle for motivation, but I like to see the flat tautness for motivation. I would vote yes on Spanx, particularly a bodysuit or pants.

Hell no. None of that sounds comfortable.

I am not overweight, just slightly saggy, but very fit for a 54 year old grandmother. I went to the gym in Spanx and actually had to stop working out and go home. I was miserable!! Everywhere I bend, the Spanx cut into me like a knife. Never again will I make that mistake. There are plenty of other slimming, flattering workout clothes that allow freedom of movement and still look nice. Well fitting clothing items, made for the activity, are the best way to go. Plus most are much more reasonably priced and come in prettier colors than Spanx or any equivalent shapewear.

Yes, but not for vanity reasons. If you are like me and have lost some extra weight we sometimes have some loose skin that kinda flops around when running, bouncing, etc. It is just more comfy when jogging for me. It is not that different than wearing a sports bra to hold your boobs in place. Also, if it makes me look better then great. It would not be for everyone obviously and you can actually find things like this in workout wear that are actually cheaper.

No way, man. I'll stick to my tank tops and compression shorts!

If it actually wicks moisture away and supports in the areas needed without getting in the way, I'd be all for it, the only thing, I'm not shelling out for new gym clothes anytime soon.

Dance wear yes, bicycling maybe... to work out? NO!

I think they're false advertisement. Under a nice dress or evening wear, sure, look flawless.

But if you have to rely on them every day, how about spending more time on your health, and less money on shapers????

No, I wouldn't because I feel that a little jiggling is good. Now, if I had been heavy and I had skin left from rapid weight loss, I probably would wear it to make it easier to exercise.

I wouldn't wear spanx period. This sort of falls in the same category as pushup/padded bras for me. Even when I was flat chested (I was a VERY late bloomer) I refused to wear them. I want to look like me and if I am uncomfortable with how I look in something because of extra weight, I either shouldn't wear it or should work hard to lose the flab.

In a way though, I understand wearing something like spanx to the gym more than I understand wearing them under a dress. I wear a heavy duty sports bra because otherwise my breasts, which are now fairly large, jiggle and get in my way. If I had other parts that jiggled, I'd probably want to contain them too in order to do my workout unemcumbered.
