Yawning? 6 Surprising Reasons Why You're Exhausted

http://media.zenfs.com/en-US/blogs/partner/yawning030707_468x671.jpgSure, getting enough sleep is the biggest way to beat the 4:00 yawning session (I swear, there is something about this time--weirdly, I could fall asleep at 4 p.m. everyday!), but did you know that several other surprising things could be making you sleepy? Here are some unlikely yawn-inducers...

WebMD recently ran a piece about the most common reasons for feeling tired. Here are some:

    1. A hidden UTI: In some cases, fatigue may be the only sign of a urinary tract infection, reports WebMD. If you suspect something's up (and you have pain and burning when you pee) talk to your doc. A urine test can quickly confirm a UTI.

    2. Your diet: If you're not eating enough, you will be tired. Calories = energy, my friends. (I feel like I sounded just like John McCain when I wrote that.)

See our tips: 10 Things He's Thinking When You're Naked

    3. Food allergies you didn't know you had: Some doctors believe that exhaustion could be a sign of hidden food allergies.

    4. Caffeine overload: You probably reach for more coffee when you're tired, but experts say that too much caffeine can sometimes backfire, causing you to feel more fatigued. Maybe skip the triple-venti today.

    5. Undetected thyroid problems: Fatigue is one symptom of a thyroid condition called hypothyroidism. Fortunately, this is such a treatable thing (I have it, and just pop a pill each day--no biggie). Most health experts concur that every woman should have her thyroid levels tested every few years (just a simple blood test) to rule out any such conditions (they're common in women).

P.S. I'd add a sixth: your snoring man. My husband snores, and it makes it so hard for me to get to sleep most nights. I told you about a new product called Brez that he was going to try. Well, he tried it! The verdict: While it didn't stop his snoring completely, it has helped. Somehow the snoring has gotten softer and less intense. Hey, I'll settle for any improvement!

Are you sleepy today? What do you blame your fatigue on? The baby? Your job? Stress?

Hypothyroidism is actually more difficult to deal with, with some people. I would not suggest getting on a man made hormone. I have hypothyroidism and I stuggled with my medication, synthroid. I was so depressed and I didn't want to live. I stopped taking synthroid and now I feel alive and alot better. This was all due to my Birth controll. I suggest if you are on birth control, do not take ones with hormones.

Years ago a friend told me that between about 3:00pm and 4:30pm is a time that rat exterminators lay out their traps, etc., for rats, because they slow down around then. Apparently, humans commonly do as well. Low blood sugar I believe I heard. Makes sense. Lunch calories are running out and most of us have been up for a while working. Helen, Daniel's sweetheart.

It's also a sign of stress too. When I just started going to a 4 year university by the spring semester I was so stressed out (and didn't know it) that I was so fatigued... I had blood tests done because I thought it might be serious since I had never been so fatigued before... but it just ended up being stress.

How about undiagnosed diabetes, kidney problems, excessive weight? There are so many more reasons that you can be tired that this is a ridiculous and irresponsible article. Let's all take our medical advice from a writer from glamour magazine...that a good idea.

a big cause of fatigue is also due to an imbalance of candida Yeast in our bodies which is never diagnosed by doctors but can be found in blood work if you're looking for it. the types of diets we as americans eat feed the yeast to flourish and grow out of control. read up on it, do a cleanse to get your yeast, bacterial, and fungal levels back to normal. Good yogurt, veges, and you'll feel 10x better. I did mine recently, and not only did my energy sky-rocket after 4 years of blah, but I also lost a ton of weight as an added bonus.

I have been taking a nap almost every afternoon from 3-5, I get so sleepy during that time that I can't function. I am trying to get out of that habit.I go to bed at 10 almost every night, I am guessing it is stress.

If mattythe mongoose's only sleep problem is having two children climbing in bed with her and her husband, try to think about who are the children and who are the parents. Discipline makes a world of difference. Children need limits, and parents need sleep. You don't need to be cruel, and it might take a few nights for it to sink in that they have their own beds. But if you keep taking them back to their own beds it will work, just don't feel sorry for them and let them back in your bed, it only takes one time and they are back to stay.

Can't Yahoo afford to hire professional writers that can figure out a medical alternative to the word "pee"?

Thyroidism runs in my Mother's side of family - grandfather had a huge goiter which became cancerous, painful death. My sister would only take Armours for her problem, but one doctor told her there was no difference
between it and synthetics. She told him he'd understand the difference close-up when she returned in a few weeks to wound him. He quickly wrote the prescription for Armours.

Type 2 diabetes is another reason for feeling really tired. You can have it and not know it-I did.
    • Erin  •  2 years 8 months ago
This can be completely normal. It occurs when there is a dip in clock dependant alerting and sleep debt is stronger. It just might mean you aren't getting enough sleep. Other things that could be fragmenting sleep and causing tiredness during the day are sleep disordered breathing problems, periodic limb movements with arousals from sleep, or possibly other parasomnias. Talk to your doctor if this is a significant problem for you.

Sure, hypothyroidism! But why don't you do a story about how someone can score normal on "that simple bloodtest" - TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone, but STILL be hypothyroid? Help us ladies out here, with an expose! This is the issue with many women over 60, and with all women when their health plan uses the old "normal" range of .5 to 5.5 whatever units. Note that the American Endocrinology Society (or Society of Endocrinologists) has dropped the normal range to 3.0, and individual specialists have dropped it even lower for older women, and ALL do a FREE T3 and FREE T4 -- even with a "normal" TSH - for older women. If you are extremely tired, with or without feet swelling, joint pain, depression, brittle/dry hair and nails, over 60, recent weight gain you can't lose, problems with temperature changes, etc. etc., GET ALL THREE TESTS!

Seasonal allergies (which last most of the year) make me so sleepy! Something about the pressure in my sinuses. I have to yawn all the time, my eyes water, and it's hard to keep my eyes open some days. Allergy meds make can make you sleepy (even the non-drowsy) too. Most days aren't too bad, I'm used to it, and on the bad ones.... well.. I sleep. Why fight it?! Napping is good for you.
