Help your fine hair hold an updo

Do you have fine hair? It's true that fine hair can be difficult to style. Or maybe it's easy to style, but the style never lasts. So you find yourself tucking it behind your ears, putting it up in a ponytail, or just getting it all cut off. It can be completely frustrating, especially if you want to wear your hair in a special style. Here are a few tips and tricks to help your fine hair hold its updo.

Don't shampoo. If your hair is too clean, it will be more difficult to style. Dirty hair has more 'grip' to it. This is especially important for fine hair! Avoid washing the day of your event.

Don't condition. Conditioning your hair will make it too soft to hold its style. So unless your hair is terribly knotted, skip the conditioner for a few days. This will help make the cuticle a little bit rougher, so that it has more volume and more sticking power.

Spritz it with dry shampoo. If you feel like your hair is greasy, don't worry. A little bit of dry shampoo will take care of that greasy look. The dry shampoo itself will help add texture and volume to hair, giving it more oomph.

Apply a strong hold wax. A product such as whipped wax will give your hair tons of hold without weighing it down. You may need to experiment ahead of time to find out just how much product you need to use to get the desired results.

Curl. Curling your hair will give it much more body to work with. You can use hot rollers, a curling iron, or set damp hair in curlers. Either way, you'll have more volume and body to work your style.

Tease. Pick up a teasing comb from your local beauty supply store. Tease away to get as much volume and oomph from your hair. The more you tease, the more hold you will have. Be careful that you don't comb the teasing out when you start to style your hair.

Choose the right style. Choose a simpler style to get more hold. Twisties look great, but they give a lot more opportunity for slippage. A French twist, simple chignon, or a messy bun are great looks for fine hair.

Add some extensions. If you feel like you don't have enough hair to hold your style, invest in a few clip in hair extensions. You won't see them in the style unless you pick a color that contrasts against your natural color. They will add instant volume and body to your locks.

Spray it with hairspray until it doesn't move. Spray it like crazy, and then spray it some more. Just be careful that you don't hold the can of hairspray too close to your head. If you do, the hairspray will be too heavy and will make the style so wet that it collapses.

After you've styled your updo, you should be able to shake your head pretty vigorously and have everything stay in place. When in doubt, see a professional for extra help. Enjoy your beautiful updo!
