Social networking has allowed for friendships to develop and span the miles in such a way that some people are closer to their online friends than they are to people they see face to face every day. Online friends want to celebrate momentous occasion with each other just like they would with any other friends. A virtual baby shower is a great way to celebrate a new life without having to worry about travel or distance. You can even play games and give gifts just like you would at a face to face baby shower. In fact, a virtual baby shower is actually easier because you don't have to decorate or cook and yet almost anyone can arrange their schedule so they can attend.
Facebook is probably the easiest way to hold a virtual baby shower. Almost everyone has a Facebook account, so why not use it to hold a baby shower and easily invite friends? You can invite people by creating an "event" and inviting friends individually, or by groups that you and the mom-to-be are a part of.
Use chat features to gather. Whether you use Facebook, another social network or an instant message system, you can use the chat feature to talk to each other and play the games. Groups in Facebook have premade chat features so all you have to do is go in the group and change your chat settings to "online". Even Yahoo allows you the ability to create a chat room so you can all be together at the baby shower.
Give real gifts using virtual methods. It's easy to give gifts using virtual methods. You don't even need the future mom's personal information. Amazon.com offers an easy to use gift card system that can be used without ever leaving Facebook. You can also offer services you provide, send cash using PayPal or direct your friend to your product page to pick something out. Of course, you can always mail the future mom gifts as well, providing she wants to share her personal information online.
Play virtual baby shower games. The fewer details you know about the pregnancy, the more games you can play at the baby shower. You can always play games that include guessing the baby's name, how many squares of toilet paper it takes to go around the future mom's belly, avoiding saying the word "baby" and many other games that you can play at any other baby shower.
The Internet offers a wealth of free prizes to give away. If you provide an online service or product that the guests can all make use of, you can offer these as prizes for the games you play. If not, there is a wealth of free gifts to be found on the Internet. Free eBook downloads, coupons, subscriptions and apps all make fun gifts that won't cost the hostess a dime to give away. With a bit of creativity and research, your guests will have tons of fun as they help the future mother to celebrate the coming birth of her child.
