    Introduction to rag quilts

I was recently introduced to rag quilts. Folks, I've got to tell you, I think I'm in love. I'm not sure why I never saw one before, but the first rag quilt I came across made me just want to snuggle. There's something about the exposed seams and frayed ends that captures my attention. From gnarly old flag patterns to soft baby blanket colors with chenille, in my book, a rag quilt can warm a room like no other.

    • Stars and Stripes

Over the past year, I've grown fond of red, white and blue. So, when I ran across a rag quilt of the stars and stripes, my heart started to race. Lizzy and Company has an adorable pattern and instructions on how to create a primitive raggedy American flag quilt. It looks so simple; I might just have to try it.

    • Baby Quilts in Soft Pastels

Pastels are so subtle and soft. Combine them with the fuzzy seams of a rag quilt in a nursery print and you've got an item so special that it's bound to be handed down from generation to generation. Most baby rag quilts also expose a layer of batting in the seams - which softens the look even more. How precious.

    • Autumn Color Rag Quilts

I've got a thing about autumn colors. They look so warm and so inviting. And on a rag quilt, they are a knock out. Just imagine calico prints in deep forest greens, terra cotta, brick red and navy - with a little bit of golden umber thrown in - like a kiss from the sun. Oh, how my heart just melts thinking about snuggling up on a couch with an autumn color rag quilt with soft edges.

    • How To Make Your Own Rag Quilt

Have I got you hooked yet? I know I'm ready to take the plunge. If you've ever wanted to make a traditional quilt - but, you didn't feel confident enough to get it just right, then try a rag quilt instead. Neatness doesn't count on these quilts and Fiskars has a great tutorial on Crafting a Rag Quilt that gives step-by-step instructions that will show you just how easy it is.
