7 Foods that Do the Weight-Loss Work for You

ApplesApplesBy the Editors of EatingWell Magazine

Do you want to lose weight for good in the new year? Try increasing your daily fiber intake in the form of nutrient-rich high-fiber foods. Why fiber? Recent research in the Journal of Nutrition suggests eating more fiber as a way to prevent weight gain or even encourage weight loss. Over the course of the two-year study, the researchers found that boosting fiber by 8 grams for every 1,000 calories resulted in about 4 1/2 pounds of weight lost.

Try it for yourself. If you're consuming 2,000 calories per day, aim to increase your fiber by 16 grams.

Here are 7 fiber-rich foods that help do the weight-loss work for you.

    1. Apples: A medium apple (3-inch diameter) contains 4 grams of fiber; a large apple (3 1/4-inch diameter) has 5. Apples also offer a bit of vitamin C and potassium.

    2. Green Beans: One cup boasts 4 grams of fiber, plus a healthy dose (30% daily value) or skin-helping vitamin C.

    3. Sweet Potatoes: A medium-size baked sweet potato (2 inches wide, 5 inches long…a little larger than your computer mouse), skin included, offers 5 grams of fiber-for just 103 calories. It's also a nutrition powerhouse: providing 438% daily value of eye-healthy vitamin A (eat these foods to help you see more clearly), 37% daily value of vitamin C, plus some potassium, vitamin E, iron, magnesium and phytochemicals like beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin.

    4. Raspberries: Raspberries are a great source of fiber-some of it soluble in the form of pectin, which helps lower cholesterol. One cup of raspberries has 8 grams of fiber. Raspberries are also an excellent source of vitamin C.

    5. Strawberries:
One cup of strawberries has a respectable 3 grams of fiber and more than a full day's recommended dose of vitamin C-an antioxidant that helps keep skin healthy.

    6. Chickpeas: Just 3/4 cup of chickpeas has a whopping 8 grams of fiber! You also get a good amount of vitamin B6 and folate, both of which play a role in forming healthy new cells.

    7. Pumpkin: A cup of cooked pumpkin contains 3 grams of fiber. You also get vitamin A (245% daily value), vitamins C, E and potassium.

i quit drinking them about 4 years ago. I was getting bad heartburn every evening. Took everything for it with no help. Started eliminating stuff i was eating and thought yogurt was what was making me sick. Turned out to be soda. I've felt great ever since. I wonder how many people have the same problem but take pills to control it when they could save money and quit drinking soda...

      I wish chocolate had fiber.
      • Elizabeth 4 months ago
In small quantities, dark choc. is good for you. Lots of antioxidants and helps with sweet cravings. Stick to an ounce or so at the most.
      • shaniah 4 months ago
Hershey dark chocolate with or without almonds is an okay source of fiber!
      • Sukie 4 months ago
Dark chocolate does have fiber. Up to 3 grams per serving depending on the brand you find. Theo organic peppermint stick 70% dark chocolate bar has 4g for 1/2 bar. Ghirardelli peppermint bark with dark choc bar has 2g for four sections. And those are the two I happen to have on hand to give you.

My husband had a heard attack at age 40, 3yrs ago and luckly he is doing great. Unfortuately my brother at age 40 as well had a massive heart attack and didn't make it 2 months after my husband!! We have made the life style change to eat healthier and workout. we both have lost weight and feel wonderful. I went from 190 to 124. My husband went from 270 and is 205 now. His plans is to be 190 this year. I now instruct Zumba and love it, and am making other ladies feel great about themselves as well as losing weight!

Sorry to hear about your brother Janie, but it's great that you guys are using the health issues to motivate yourselves. I know the way I was going I was a heart attack candidate too. I'm 35 with a 4 yr old and another on the way, and my greatest fear is leaving them before they are ready to face this cold, hard world. I have a 60 yr old male friend in Mississippi who does Zumba and loves it. Just wanted to let people know that its not just for ladies and not to be intimidated by the professional dancers in the infomercial! If I can find a class around here I might even try it.

THX Y A Mi Qe, you too!

Lothar-thx and your right, it motivates me everyday. I hope your continuing to change in the way, you take care of yourself. Your children need you around as you mentioned! unfortunately Males are intimidated but you can't blame them, I think its great your friend is doing zumba. Hey Men, its not just for women! Zumba classes are usually all over the place,so hope you can find one afforable to join. Good luck!!

lOVE ALL THESE COMMENTS!! YOU CAN HAVE ALL THIS KNOWLEDGE BUT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IN WEIGHT LOSS IS HAVING THE WILL POWER AND STAMINA TO KEEP DOING THE EXERCISE AND CONTINUING TO HAVE PORTION CONTROL. IT IS A STRUGGLE FOR ME.
      • Linda 4 months ago
I hear ya. I am right behind you on that one. Will power is a big struggle for me and being consistent. I hope it all works for you this year.
      • Star 4 months ago
I think the big thing is to realize you are worth it. Not so much will power, but the firm knowledge that you are worth it. And you are.

I promise I will loose my weight I was thin all my life and about two years ago started to get the munchies all the time, I realize its because my kids and grandkids are no longer with me and I get lonely and eat all the time now, so I joined my place of worship and we are in a walking club and its helping me and I exercise and walk everyday and I am in my early 70ties and I am determined to loose about 35 lbs.

    • Joycee G  •  4 months ago
Eat all those fiber foods, stay away from white breads, anything with white flour, sugar.
Eat small amounts throughout the day. Don't drink sodas, even diet soda, it releases insulin and that is what is storing the fat, anything with artificial sweeteners does this.Eat almonds and other nuts in between. Stay away from fast foods. I do all of this and I don't have a weight problem, just stay the same............but you have to excercise!

I walk 6 miles ever day 7 days a week, I drink nothing, and i mean nothing but water. If you want to eat the best apple ever grown, try Goldencrisp Apples, they cost a little more about 1.89 a pd, but they are worth it. Dont eat after 6pm unless its an apple, and lots of water, i drink half of my weight in water ever day, and i weigh 160. If you eat 5 small meals every day, intead of 3 large ones, that helps to. Also don't skip breakfast, thats the most important meal of the day. If you get a desire to snack after your meals, try have a cup of hot Choclate or Cocoa. My wife took my advice and stopped all cafine and colas, and lost 35 pds in 3 months. Oh I forgot to mention, i am a very young 70, and my Doctor says I have the body and the energy of a 50 year old.

They had on GMA this morning a guy on weight loss,he said you should consume 40 grams of fiber a day,Now if you know anything about fiber, about 8 grams or more say about 12,(a bowl of kashi) you will have unbeleaveable gas and with in about 4 to 5 hours crap like a goose,now,40 grams of fiber,OMG,you would live in the bathroom and burn a hole in the ozone layer. If you don't beleave me,eat 40 grams of fiber then post the out come, take your laptop, you will be in the john for a while.

Apples are also more effective than coffee to wake you up. It's a fact. Try an apple during your mid day slump over the junk. You'll feel better the rest of the day. Try an apple over an energy drink. Wash down with water, the other "magic" diet drink. :)
