Soup or Sandwich: What’s the Best Lunch for Weight Loss?

By Kerri-Ann Jennings, M.S., R.D., Associate Nutrition Editor at EatingWell Magazine

If you're trying to lose weight, chances are you're spending more time thinking about every food choice you make. And it turns out that, beyond the calories in-calories out equation, the foods you choose can make a difference. Take lunch. When it comes to losing weight, which is the better lunch choice: soup or a sandwich?

    Must-Read: 3 Healthy Ingredients of a Get-Skinny Lunch

As the associate nutrition editor of EatingWell Magazine I often field questions like this. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule-a creamy clam chowder will pack in more calories than a small turkey sandwich crammed with vegetables, for instance. But as a rule, soup is the better choice. Why?

Soup has a high water content, which can help you feel full. And, just like salad, it's a good vehicle for vegetables (the fiber in vegetables also promotes feelings of fullness for few calories). Research backs this up. In one study, published in the journal Physiology & Behavior, people consumed the fewest calories on days when they ate soup rather than the same ingredients in solid form.

Recipes to Try: 30-Minute Low-Calorie Soup Recipes to Help You Lose Weight

In another study, published in Appetite, people who started lunch with vegetable soup ended up eating 20 percent less than those who skipped the soup. Broth-based soups packed with veggies give you the biggest bang for your caloric buck. (For an extra weight-loss boost, try these Recipes for Soups to Rev Your Metabolism.)

If you do go for a sandwich, consider skipping the second slice of bread and make sure to layer on some lean protein and vegetables for added staying power. You'll save 100 calories when you opt for an open-faced sandwich. And check out these Low-Calorie Wraps & Sandwiches, which will help you meet your calorie goals.

none of the canned versions...sodium bloats you up! whole grain bread, with NON nitrite meats, or veggies, natural stuff. Make your own soup..no salt...OR sea salt ok

Salt is salt. Only difference between sea salt and salt mined is the additional mineral content and taste. The sodium is the same.

Let's compromise, only bread and water...

In the colder months it's soup for me! I make my own, so I control the amount of salt that goes in. I load it up with tons of veggies and lean protein.

I like a 100 cal flat wrap with extra fiber and protein with a little grilled chicken, tomatoes, red onion and a smear of guacamole. It is very satisfying. Sometimes I'll opt for the low sodium soup and some Greek yogurt.

Soup as a starter for dinner is great, but for me - lunch is my slingshot through the day and I need a more substantial meal at lunch to boost me through the afternoon. If I don't get enough fuel at lunch, the odds of me over-eating at dinner go way up.

Very true, Sandy. It's a balancing act. Well said.

Why not both?! Homemade vegetable soup with half a sandwich (low cal whole grain, turkey ham and no cheese) and you'll feel full and satisfied for hours. Happy eating!

Make your own home-made soup and stay away from the canned stuff which tastes HORRIBLE and has WAY too much salt.

Actually having a nice meal at lunch time, and just a small dinner is best. Go ahead and have soup and a sandwich for lunch, and then smaller dinner. Reverse the small lunch big dinner and you'll lose weight!

Soup and salad for lunch. And fresh fruit for dessert. Then take a walk. Canned soups taste good, but contain so many chemicals. Make your own stews and soups if you can. Pile in the veggies.

I used to eat lots of canned soup until I learned about the amount of bisphenol in it. Now, I make my own (time-consuming) or use dried bean packages (not as tasty). Rats!

To me a sandwich will always be better, can pack on a whole variety of nutrients in one sandwich. Most soups that taste good have exorbitant amounts of sodium, so though soups have higher water content, you're also more likely to retain that water.

Both are good for weight loss. When I eat a sandwich, I eat it open face or I eat just a half. Put whatever you want on it, but eat it just as I described. As for soup, my rule is broth. Any flavor with 4 saltines will fill you up and be tasty as well. I reached my goal this year. I shrank from a size 18 to an 8. So healthy food choices and my Zumba, deserve the credit.

Love the low cals in soup, but I keep track of my protein intake (50 g or more/day). Haven't found a soup that's high in protein, so I opt for a turkey and spinach on a whole grain sandwich thin. It works for me.

WATCH OUT- TOO HIGH SODIUM... I NEVER EAT ANY SOUP AGAIN. SODIUM SOMETIMES COUNT 1,000 BUT YOU CANNOT HAVE DINNER OR BREAKFAST.... ALSO BREAD IS BAD FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE THRYOID DISEASE.

      Soup is the best.

Soup alone is not a meal for me, never has been never will be. I hate those Progresso soup commercials acting like its a meal. I only eat soup when I am sick, or in addition to the rest of my meal. If I ate soup for lunch and nothing more I'd starve!
