When you have tasty meals and time to spend at home, it's easy to stay on track with exercise and be mindful of what you eat - but at work, it's sometimes a different story. Some people have jobs where they can't squeeze in exercise, so sitting at a desk or standing with customers is an easy way to get off track with a fitness routine. There are a few things you can do before you even get to the office that will help keep you feeling healthy and motivated throughout the day. Here are a few tips to staying on track, even at work:
Exercise on Break - If you are chained to a desk throughout the day, use your break time to get some activity. Walk around the office to get fresh air, boost energy levels and burn some calories. Buy a pedometer to keep track of steps taken throughout the day -park further away in the parking lot, take stairs instead of elevator, and walk around the office passing messages rather than emailing to rack up steps!
Buddy System - It's much easier to avoid the naughty foods in the commissary if you have a buddy keeping you accountable. Find a friend who's looking to make changes too, and as a team you can conquer the vending machine temptation or even choose healthier dishes to eat at lunch meetings. If you know where you're going for lunch, look up nutritional information before going so you can plan ahead - it's much easier to choose healthier options when you aren't famished.
Alternate Foods - Why does every office potluck seem to be filled with cakes, cookies or other fatty options? Bring in healthier dishes, so at least you have something to enjoy while everyone else binges on junk food - chances are, your dishes will be eaten just as quickly and no one will ever know it's "healthy".
Pack Your Lunch - One of the easiest ways to stay on track is to pack your own lunch in a fashionable lunch bag. When packing, don't forget to add plenty of healthy snacks so you don't get tempted to visit the vending machine halfway through the day!
It's never easy to stay on track when you're outside your element, but these tips help make it a little easier. Preparation is the key to staying successful - find support within the workplace to make better choices and always make sure you have healthy, but tasty options in your lunch bag.
