      Time to clean the refrigerator!

The image of someone dusting the inside of his or her refrigerator makes me laugh because who uses a dust feather in a refrigerator? Wipes, sponges, towels, yes. A dust feather is...highly questionable at best.

Putting that aside, I am a stickler about keeping the inside of our refrigerator clean. It gets the full clean out and wipe down every weekend, right before it gets loaded with new groceries. My reason is twofold. First, it's important to keep your refrigerator free from janky germs. Two, I once was a guest at a home and opened a refrigerator that look liked it hadn't been cleaned in years. It was gross, plain and simple. And I vowed that I would never allow any guests to have that experience in my home.

Now that we're at that time of year where we're having parties for the Super Bowl and the slew of awards shows, keeping a tidy kitchen -- and home, in general -- is top of mind. Besides keeping my refrigerator clean, I try to do little things every day to keep our kitchen ar

Plain little ole bottle of 3% peroxide you can get for under $1.00 at any drug store. And most doctors don't tell you about peroxide. Have you ever smelled bleach in a doctor's office? NO! Dr's Dentist's clean offices with peroxide.

Bleach smells, and it is not healthy! Ask the nurses who work in the doctor's offices, and ask them if they use bleach at home. They are wiser and know better!
Did you also know bleach was invented in the late 40's? It's chlorine, folks! And it was used to kill our Troops. Peroxide was invented during WWI in the 20's. It was used to save and help cleanse the needs of our troops and hospitals.
      Please think about this:

      1. Take one capful (the little white cap that comes with the bottle) and hold in your mouth for one minute daily, then spit it out. No more canker sores, and your teeth will be whiter without expensive pastes. Use it instead of mouthwash to freshen your breath and kill any bacteria in between meals.
      2. Let your toothbrushes soak in a cup of peroxide to keep them free of germs.
      3. Clean your counters and table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters.

STEAM! I have a small steamer that I use on my countertops, stovetop, outside of appliances, range hood, etc. It works great and is the best thing I've EVER used on my stove top. I have a steam cleaner for my kitchen/bathroom floor.

Hardwater soap grime on those wretched beautiful but mind torturing glass shower doors? Use combo of 1/4 salt to 3/4 baking soda as a cleanser - doesn't scratch, leaves them clear and clean. Meantime, put moisturizer all over hands and put on rubber gloves before doing this task - protects your hands (this stuff WILL dry them out) and makes them soft at the same time. And yes - to hold off future problems - Rain-X. I never have it handy and my guys seem incapable of using a squeegie. We all have other redeeming qualities but dealing with these pretty but ridiculously difficult to keep perfect floating doors requires alternative action.

For Oily or Ink Spots I've used LESTOIL Floor Cleaner for years. I put a little on the spots before washing & rub/scratch it in, let it sit for a minute & then wash. It's great. Also cleans alot of surfaces that have buildup....like a linoleum or vinyl floor or I've even used it on vinyl car interior. It's like a solvent but it dissolves in water.

In the $dollar store I use there rust, calcuim cleaner, it is very similar to lime away @ a fraction of the cost. Use it on glass shower doors, shower tiles, & toilet bowl. It works great.

I forgot to mention about the yellow stains that appear in the armpits of my husband's dress undershirts. Clorox doesn't work, it would just turn the spots orange. I found this stuff called White Brite at the store. It takes the yellow out of any white clothes. You soak your clothes in it for 15 minutes in the washing machine, then add detergent and softener, and run through regular cycle. Whites are much whiter, and the yellow stains disappear, and I do this to the whites a least once a month.

15 minute rule. I tell myself to work in a trouble area for 15 min. A lot of times I find I've completed the job before that 15 minutes is up. I'm a procrastinator and this has helped to cure me of putting off til later a chore I don't particularly like to do.

Make yourself a nice hot cup of tea before cleaning the microwave. Maybe it's just the steam, but it seems like cleaning the remains of the spaghetti/meatloaf/cream-of-wheat/something-cheesy/do-I-even-WANT-to-know explosion takes quite a bit less effort after making tea. As an old cleaning sage once said, 'It is better to wipe the microwave clean than to scrub'. And you get a delicious mug of tea in the process. Perfect.

Do you hate cleaning oven racks? I found this tip on an advice site a few months ago and I was amazed at how well it worked. Put enough hot water in the bathtub to completely cover the racks. Dissolve a few (I used three) dishwasher tablets in the water. Place racks in the tub. The site said to soak over night but I only soaked them for a few hours. The crud wiped right off the racks and I mean right off. Almost no effort needed. A few small spots remained which required a quick swipe with a cleaning pad (had I soaked them over night I may not have had to use the cleaning pad at all). This tip is a huge time saver for those of us with OCD when it comes to cleaning the oven. It is simple and it REALLY works!

I have to have the area around my sink faucets whistle clean, also the can opener blade, the grout or sealed areas around the sink. So I buy a brand new toothbrush and keep in the dishwasher (it gets cleaned and sterilized everytime the dishwasher runs), and scrub around faucets, under the spigots, the blades of the can opener, other little small places that rags and sponges don't reach. And I take apart my blender after every use and clean all parts of it. I once went to a church social where they were making smoothies. One such blender was filthy and looked like it had never been cleaned. Needless to say, I steered children away from those smoothies. Couldn't have anyone getting sick!

Disolve cascade in hot water, then add your whites. This will make your shirts look just like new & no more stains. Also works on your colored clothes. Just make sure cascade is dissolved all the way before adding colored clothes or it will bleach white.

      Continued from previous post:

      10. And of course, if you like a natural look to your hair, spray the 50/50 solution on your wet hair after a shower and comb it through. You will not have the peroxide-burnt blonde hair like the hair dye packages but more natural highlights if your hair is a light brown, reddish, or dirty blonde. It also lightens gradually, so it's not a drastic change.
      11. Put half a bottle of peroxide in your bath to help get rid of boils, fungus, or other skin infections.
      12. You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour it directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.
      13. Use peroxide to clean mirrors. There is no smearing.
      14. In the bathroom, if someone has been careless & has peed on the floor around the toilet & it's begun to smell of urine. Just put some peroxide in a spray bottle & spray. In the blink of any eye all the smell will be gone & the bacteria eliminated!

      15. Fill a shot glass with 50/50 peroxide and alcohol, and using a dropper to pour some of it into one ear first, keeping your head tilted to one side for three or four minutes till the mix stop bubbling inside that ear. Dry the outer area with a tissue and discard. Repeat these instructions on the second ear, and only then, you will notice the inside of your ears will not only be cleaner but you will be able to hear better. Doing this once a month will keep you from an ear ache or infections. This especially benefits children who are prone to colds, allergies and earaches during the swimming season.
