America's Healthiest Ice Creams and Yogurts

    Getty ImagesGetty ImagesBy Susan Hall

We scoured America's scoop shops (tough job, but somebody had to do it) for the tastiest (and healthiest) ice creams, yogurts, and sorbets that will satisfy your sweet tooth without hurting your waistline.

Our criteria: superior taste, stellar nutrition, and countrywide availability. Here, the five winners. (A standard scoop, by the way, is about 1/2 cup, or 3 to 3.5 ounces.)

    Häagen-Dazs Mango Fat Free Sorbet
A blend of juicy, tropical mangoes

    120 calories, 0 grams fat, 20% RDA vitamin A, 10% RDA vitamin C
    $3

"If you love mangoes, you'll enjoy this sorbet. It's very satisfying-you only need a little to feel content, and it's very refreshing on a hot summer day," judge Christine Palumbo, RD, says. And judge Kara Nielsen, a former pastry chef who now follows food trends, says, "It's shocking that there is no fat. This sorbet is so creamy and totally indulgent."

Ben & Jerry's Black Raspberry Swirl Low Fat Frozen Yogurt
Black raspberry yogurt with thick black raspberry swirls made with real black and red raspberries

140 calories, 1.5 grams fat, 15% RDA calcium
    $3.50

"This has a serious raspberry flavor and a beautiful creaminess. It feels like you're eating a full-fat ice cream, not a healthy frozen yogurt," Palumbo says. She and the other judges also like the ingredients, including hormone-free milk and fair-trade flavors. Nutrition pamphlets are available at Ben & Jerry's counters, and there are lots of healthy choices-sorbets, frozen yogurts, and even full-fat ice creams like the next winner. (The vanilla, chocolate, and coffee flavors have 200 or fewer calories, too.)

Ben & Jerry's Strawberry Ice Cream
Strawberry ice cream with real strawberry pieces

    170 calories, 9 grams fat, 15% RDA vitamin C, 10% RDA calcium
    $3.50

"It is delicious in taste and in feel-very honest and fresh," says judge Gale Gand, a pastry chef and co-owner of Tru in Chicago. Palumbo loves that it has only eight ingredients-all natural. Ask for a kid-size cup to cut calories.

Health.com: 11 healthy milkshakes and smoothies

Baskin-Robbins Light Aloha Brownie Ice Cream

Light chocolate ice cream with ribbons of fudge and chunks of macadamia nut toffee

160 calories, 5 grams fat, 10% RDA calcium

    $2

"Rich, fudgy, chocolaty, and delicious," Palumbo says. "If you need a chocolate fix, this will do the trick!" Baskin-Robbins's BRight Choices flavors-like Cappuccino Chip, Premium Churned Light Raspberry Chip, and various sorbets-are healthy takes on their classics. We did have one beef: Baskin-Robbins' products had more artificial ingredients than the other contenders.

Health.com: Desserts for 300 calories or less

Häagen-Dazs Cranberry Blueberry Fat Free Sorbet
A blend of tart cranberries and sweet blueberries

    100 calories, 0 grams fat, 8% RDA vitamin C
    $3

"This has a nice flavor, is very refreshing and tart-but not too tart," Gand says. Häagen Dazs shops aren't overflowing with low-fat ice creams, but they do have other amazing fat-free sorbets besides our two winners. Our judges like that HD offers small cup sizes for portion control and that you can request nutrition information, which is kept behind the counter.

    If you add a cone...
    • Cake cone: 17 calories, 0 grams fat
    • Sugar cone: 40 calories, 0.5 grams fat
    • Waffle cone: 121 calories, 2 grams fat

as far as what are the healthiest ice creams, i have yet to find one that does not contain partially hydrogenated soybean oil. everyone by now know that that stuff is terrible for one's heart. when i find one that doesn't contain that stuff, i will then feel more at ease with consuming ice cream.

Well!! My favorite place and ice cream is actually ERMA's Frozen Custard in Michigan!! It is the best and I agree with all the people that say, if your going to eat ice cream, custard etc. Forget worrying about the calories. Live a little!!
The sad part for me is I live in California and ERMA's isn't here, so I only get to enjoy when I go back to my roots!!

I make my own using the Ninji, with low fat Yogurt frozen in ice cube trays, a couple packages of splenda, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of low fat milk, and fresh frozen fruit. It make a good 2 cups for my husband and me.

misleading information at its worst! or the judges are too prejudice to search for the truth. Not only do we have to consider the fat content, but the other ARTIFICIAL ingredients. No-fat and low-fat are NOT always the healthiest if the rest of the ingredients are artificial or contain a lot of sugar & sodium to give flavor! I give this test a F.

low or no fat buys you exactly nothing. No reduced chance of heart or circulatory problems. The low fat myth started in the 60s and has never been established experimentally. See "Informational Cascades and Rational Herding: An Annotated Bibliography and Resource Reference (Sushil Bikhchandani, David Hirshleifer, Ivo Welch). Lowfat is the same kind of phenomenon as tonsillectomies. In both cases, false conclusions get widely adopted. These dietary recommendations are therefore pretty worthless and not especially healthy.

These deserts may be a little lower in fats but in these studies they never include carbohydrates or sugars. There a few deserts that don't have really high levels of carbohydrates.

what has "free trade" got to do with being healthy?? politically correct yes but not healthy. ITA that more sugar and less fat does not also mean healthy.

Just eat less, for God's sake. All this low fat crap is just that. You see obese people checking out at the Publix with their carts filled with low fat products. Remember back in the 1980's when Low Fat Yogurt
came out. People just gorged themselves on this product thinking it was no fat. Well the fact is when something is low fat or advertised as no fat, you can bet something is added for texture and it's probably worse than the real thing. I was using SPLENDA my doctor said stop it. There have been no studies made to see if this stuff is harmful???

Edy's low calorie ice cream is the BEST.
150 calories for 3oz cup. Tastes like ice cream and no chemicals.

if you have to ask for kid size anything to cut calories is only common sense that it would cut calories. DUH I dont eat kid size anything, but I never super size anything either. If you eat one kid size you will need to consume 2 maybe 3 of it to equal a normal adult size. Be honest with your testing. Give "normal size" results in your next test. Stop misleading the people

A VERY dissapointing article; reads more like an advertizement than any research past the author's own refridgerator. I know eight year olds who can write more informatively, it's called expository writing. Yahoo really needs to step it up- not with just this article, but with others, as well.
