Little Things that Can Help You Grab that Promotion at Work

Sometimes the Softer Side of Human Relationships Are the Key

Getting a promotion is something that pretty much every worker hopes for every day, or at least every review period. During tougher economic times, you might think that grabbing that promotion is really hard, or darn near impossible. That is not the case. Paying attention to the softer, human side of business relationships can go a long way in ensuring that you get the promotion you deserve.

    Go Above and Beyond

Go above and beyond, but not only in your professional endeavors. If you have a coworker on your team who is facing difficulties at work or in their personal life, step in and lend a helping hand. Make sure that you don't neglect your own duties in the process, though.

    Organize Events

You may or may not like to participate in off-the-clock socializing with your co-workers, but the fact remains that sometimes it is necessary. If you like to stay occupied, take the initiative and organize your work events. This will show your superiors that you have dedication, and it will give them a sample of your organizational skills.

    Socialize

Even though you have a million things to do, sometimes getting that promotion is as simple as socializing. Businesses want to make sure that their employees are good with customers, and the best way for them to do that is to observe you socializing with your co-workers.

    Network

Networking will also help you snatch that promotion. It is important to get contacts at other businesses, such as your competitors, suppliers, customers and even businesses in other industries. You never know when you will need to reach out to your network to do something that will better the company.

    Educate Yourself

Never stop learning. This means keeping up with what is going on in your industry. For instance, if you work at a shoe manufacturer, read professional literature for your industry. Keep up-to-date with what is going on in the fashion circles.

    Cross Train

The difference between being stuck in a career rut and getting a promotion could be your importance to the business. Make sure you cross train on a variety of functions. The more you know -- even if you aren't an "expert" in all areas -- the more valuable you are. Knowing how functions across the business integrate will set you up for a great promotion.

Many people want to get promoted, but it's not going to just magically happen. Working hard and paying attention to the softer side of human relationships can go a long way in ensuring that your career stays on the fast track.
