How I'm reinventing myself this spring, after a tumultuous period in my love life.I'm a big proponent of spring cleaning. I actually do a thorough cleaning of my closet every other month or so, because I get bored and realize I have much to unload from my wardrobe. However, this spring I'm taking my self-reinvention to a whole new level and making changes that aren't just closet-specific. In other words, I'm spring-cleaning my life.
After a month abroad and a roller coaster of a love life in the last few years, I've decided to slow down and focus on me. I have zero desire to complicate my life and am going to turn this season into one that is all about rejuvenating my soul - both literally and metaphorically. Here are the 11 (because I couldn't stop at 10!) ways I'll be kicking my single life into gear this spring.
Juice Cleanse
As someone who thinks that the tomato on pizza counts as a veggie, one way to spring-clean my life was to get back on track to healthy eating. Or rather, on track, period, as I've never really been on it. I signed up for a juice cleanse from Blue Print Cleanse and had fresh juice delivered to my door. I'm currently on day three and although I initially feared that I wouldn't be able to do it, I actually signed up for a couple extra days just to really kick-start the "new" me. I'm also delighted by how great the juices taste -- I feel amazing already.
Haircut
Shortly after Lenny Kravitz cut off his dreads, I remember reading a quote from him where he said that hair holds a lot of energy, and if recent experiences have been negative, it's best to cut the negative energy out of your life by starting with your hair. So I cut my hair even shorter than it was. The most recent photos of Anne Hathaway's new short cut made me feel less alone in my super-short 'do. Read more: Splitsville! Exfoliate
The winter probably had you cooped up and applying layers of moisturizer to beat the dry air, so now it's time to scrub all those dead skin cells away. Even if you can't afford a fancy facial or full-body exfoliation, you can still pick up a loofah and some exfoliating shower products and scrub the havoc the last few months have wreaked on your body. Release Toxins
Honestly, I hate massages because I'm one of the most ticklish people in the world. Massages are basically hell for me, but I force myself to get them because of their benefits. Along with my juice cleanse, I'm also getting massages to release the toxins from my body. A deep-tissue massage really does a number on organs to not only get things moving, but to get all that crap out of your system.
Kill Bad Habits
No matter what your vice is, kick it to the curb (at least for now). My biggest things are alcohol and evil men, so I'm not drinking for the next 30 (or more) days and if I see a man who exhibits even the tiniest signs of narcissism, I run in the opposite direction so I can avoid falling in love with him. Yes, I can spot them from a mile away at this point in my life. Read more: 12 Relationship Red Flags
New Makeup
As I've written for The Gloss, I'm not a makeup kind of girl. However, I've decided to change that. I recently bought a new red Chanel lipstick that I won't go anywhere without and some Dior eyeliner that I plan to master putting on by the end of the week. It makes me feel not only like I'm cleaning myself up, but like I'm brand-new and colorful.
Reinvent Your Home
In addition to some heavy-duty apartment cleaning, I've decided to get rid of old things and replace them with new things. For example, I got new knives and dish towels. I also picked up a new (and cuter) shower curtain. They weren't super-major changes, but enough to make me feel like I had spruced up the place a bit.
Toss Bad Memories
Whether it's a photo of a friendship that is no longer, or a relationship that went sour, the spring is the ideal time to put the past away. Even if this means getting rid of an article of clothing that reminds you of that certain someone. You still have one of his shirts and you've been sleeping in it? Nope. This will not do. If you can throw it out, great; if not, at least put it in a box and shove it under your bed. Read more: 5 Steps To Breaking Up With Your Ex
Take A Class
I've decided I'm going to master two languages this spring. So, I signed up for two classes. It may not seem like something that could be cleansing, but knowledge is power, as they say, and nothing cleans the brain of negative thoughts (like about past relationships) like working it hard.
Exercise (Regularly!)
Your body can't function properly if it's not moving. If you want to clean up your insides, you need to find a workout routine that fits your life and to which you can stick. It will do wonders for not just your body, but your soul and brain. To quote Elle from Legally Blonde: "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands."
Tackle Your Wardrobe
Of course we had to cover this one! It's not spring-cleaning if you don't do something about your clothing and shoe situation. Unfortunately, most of us hang onto things that either don't fit us anymore or things we "think" we'll wear "someday." You need to stop this. If you haven't worn something in a year, then it needs to go. No excuses. A clean wardrobe that's full of pieces that actually make sense in your life and fit is probably the easiest form of spring-cleaning on this list -- that's why we saved it for last.
