Prince Charles of Wales and his first wife, the late Lady Diana Spencer, were officially divorced on July 15, 1996. The legal end to their royal marriage was finalized in the High Court on this date.

Of course, royal watchers had been eying the couple and pondering their marital mishaps for a long time before the historic divorce documents were filed. Gossip rags and tabloids trumpeted tales of alleged infidelities and other woes.

Now, a decade and a half later, society papers celebrate the marriage of Charles and Diana's eldest son, William, to Catherine Middleton. Kate seems to have taken on the fashion maven mantle of the woman who would have been her mother-in-law, had she not perished in a fiery car crash outside Paris on the 31 st of August in 1997.

Di, as she was popularly tagged, may have had some dalliances, so to speak. She certainly made headlines. At the same time, the late Princess was active in many humanitarian causes. Historians may tag her as a curious mix of philanthropy and philandering.

Who knows the truth may lie behind such tales? Who started it, and does it even matter anymore? And who still wants to cast the first stone?

Marriage is hard enough for regular folks.

What about royals? Palace living may be lavish and elegant, but even the heaviest stone walls may still be made of proverbial glass.

May we only hope Kate and Will are not plagued by press scandals - and that they never grow to warrant shady stories, such as those that hounded his parents (and perhaps still do).
