4 ways to throw a champagne wedding on a sparkling-cider budget

Upgrade to the honeymoon suite with the cash you'll save using these luxe tips.

    Go for the memory-making touches.

"Think about the traditions and quirks that make you unique as a couple," says Jung Lee, owner of the high-profile event planning and decor firm Fête and author of Fête: The Wedding Experience. "Hire a great band you saw on a date, or serve the biscuits from your favorite restaurant. These small, and often inexpensive, personal touches make the day extra memorable."

    Skip the major flowers.

"They can be so expensive," says Lee, who had one client who ordered $600,000 in table decorations. For something unexpected and chic, "fill clear cylinders with water and float candles in them. Or, like I did at one fall wedding, line the table with soy candles and baby pears."

    Create mood lighting.

"Bright lighting screams convention center or catering hall," says Lee. If the location doesn't have dimmers, ask if you can use amber or soft pink bulbs. "Or just turn off every other light to make things look richer."

    Know where you can skimp.

One thing that nobody will miss? Favors. "Brides obsess over them, but I've never heard a guest say, 'That was the best favor I've ever gotten!'" points out Lee. You can cut out the extra desserts, too. "Cake is more than enough."

We used our own decorations for the stage and reception. Tulle, 'twinkle' lights, silk flowers and a garden archway made for a beautiful and romantic setting during the ceremony. The reception mirrored the ceremony with tulle and lights but we skipped huge centerpieces keeping the focus on the food. All the fruit, cheeses, and veggies were 'pouring' from baskets raised up in the center of four tables in a + shape.

Great ideas! My Fiancé and I are ready to be married, but have very little money. We were thinking of a destination wedding because we both LOVE to travel! Draw back is getting others to join us...cost again...Our other idea is a boat cruise wedding. We live in NY and they have boat cruises that ride around Manhattan. Renting that for the evening may be a thought...any ideas/suggestions??

I agree with the overheaed lighting. I used a church gym - and eveyone said it was romantic. I bought 8 - 3 way touch-type up lights from big lots. Between those, candles, and hanging icicle lights on the walls - it was perfect!! I floated candles in cylinders - used chinet type table cloths, but bought red silky fabric to use as runners. It was beautiful!

Mells - Definitely check out the boat/cruise wedding...most times they include an entire package deal, all the way down to a photographer, for one price!

I'd add the dress as a budget eater.... I shopped around, and around, and around, but it was worth it! Got a beautiful custom ordered dress for $700, after 3 shops told me I'd have to pay over $2000 for the same thing. Different mfr, but still just as pretty and virtually identical. The shop owner had been doing it a long time, I told her what I wanted and that I couldn't afford it and she went right to the same dress for a third of the price, just a different maker, and it's perfect.

My wedding was simple, at home and very elegant. Cooked all the gourmet buffet ahead of time, printed up our own invitations with a kit, bought Costco roses and made bouquets and boutioniers, hired daughter's friend to sing, kept it small, had family take photos we used for the wedding disk to hand out at the part a month later. It was wonderful. The whole event was less than $1300 for 20 guests. Went to Hawaii for a fun honeymoon with the money we saved.
