5 Biological Reasons You May be Attracted to Someone

Find out what new studies suggest about human attraction and genes.

Attractive features indicate low oxidative stress:
According to this article from British newspaper The Independent, "men who were rated as the most physically attractive by women have the lowest levels of markers of oxidative stress."

Ten measurements were taken of the men to determine their symmetry. Then they were tested and quizzed for indicators of oxidative stress. "Finally, a group of women were asked to rate images of the men's bodies and faces for physical attractiveness. Results show that men who were rated as attractive by the women had significantly lower levels of oxidative stress. And men with more symmetrical bodies had lower levels and were rated as more attractive."

    The perfect body mass index:
The study also reported that "a ratio of 20.85 has been found to be most attractive in women, because, say researchers, it is seen by men as a sign of good health and good reproductive potential. One University of California study showed that women with larger hips perform better in intelligence tests, as do their children. "

Long legs in women, shorter in men:
Oddly, leg lengths were perceived differently for men and women. "Long legs are preferred in women, while men with legs the same length as the torso are preferred by women."

    Facial scars:
"Facial scars in men are seen as attractive, as long as they are the right kind of scar. A facial scar, preferably one that looks like it was inflicted in anger, increases the attractiveness of a man for a short-term relationship, according to a Liverpool University study."

    Altruistic behavior:
"New research has found genetic evidence that selfless or altruistic behavior may have evolved because it was one of the qualities our ancestors looked for in a mate. Results suggest that, in our evolutionary past, those with a stronger preference towards altruistic behavior mated more frequently with more altruistic people."

I agree with some of the other posts in that none of these reasons sound all that "biological." Attraction comes down to simple chemistry, regardless of your facial scars or waist to hip ratio; and you can neither fake it nor explain it.

Scent is linked to pheromones which give information on vital statistics. It's one of the reasons colognes and perfumes exist, though I did once hear a theory that the reason long-term relationships have difficulty working out a lot of the time is because colognes and perfumes are forms of biological false advertising. I've had the hardest time convincing my guy that I like how he smells without cologne, as it's absolutely true. Heck, I even like (more like love) his smell after he's gone on a run and sweated off a liter. Of course, I'm not with him only for the natural scent--it's mostly a really, really nice bonus. But a little violent part of me kind of wants to strangle his grandmother for getting him a huge thing of cologne every year for his birthday.

Oxidative stress? You mean to say that people are more attracted to people who look younger? Wow! Go figure...

Tom, thank you for pointing out that this article has very little to do with biological factors. It is true that biologically we tend to be more biological attracted to people whose genetic make-up is the most different from our own. Nature loves genetic diversity!

There is nothing attractive where the phrase sits for : The Grass is Greener on the Other Side; All they show as for my opposite; Too, the Monstrousities of GOD. Which their eyes and lighted inner consciences can't see just HOW UGLY they all truly are!

You forgot scent. A complete jerk who has the right biochemical scent will drive me to detraction while a sweet guy who does not smell right is impossible to date.

You kidding me?? Larger hip = better intelligence test? I guess I don't perform well on my intelligence test then. *smacks head*

Many people stay together for many years is because they understand the true meaning of what it is to Love, the ones that don't last in relationships is because they don't understand the meaning of what it is to feel Love and give Love There is absolutely a God sent heaven for Lovers, relationships are made from the essence in which you build it on, people make their own minds up to go short or long term in a relationship and what has become most attrective is the fact that many lust befor they Love and thats the whole issue these days.

Interesting article. I agree with the last one...altruism. Its a serious indicator of character, like ISN said. I also agree with Angela on scent.

I'm attracted to my Lady because she is the most beautiful woman I've ever meet in my life, she sexy, with a body like a goddess, cute and pretty like holly berry and jada piket and has a sense of humor like no other in this world ,but what attracted me the most to her was the kiss she gave me the fisrt time we meet.

These are not biological reasons, they are preferences some people have. Science has shown that one of the main "biological" reasons is the immune system. People with different immune systems attract as nature wants to build a stronger healthier baby. So it emits pheromones that transmit that data and activate or excite the sexual areas of the brain and hence attraction. That's the reason people usually know they would sleep with that person within the first minute or so.

These people "prefer". I suppose everything is "biological" in it's strictest sense, however this article is preferences of what they like
