6 Unexpected Ways to Turn Him On

In my last post, I complained that women rarely enlighten me. I usually meet female versions of "frat boys" or "meatheads." So, what makes someone interesting enough to enlighten men - and thereby turn them on?

You've got a head start if you think differently. I'm tired of hearing the same old thing, meeting women who seem to follow the masses and can't think on their own. Instead, I want to experience how your mind works. I want that amazing mental buzz (similar to the one I get when I laugh with someone) every time we talk - that's the type of thing that keeps me intrigued and attracted to you 'til death do us part.

Here are a few unexpected ways women can enlighten the opposite sex:

    1. She Appreciates "Nontraditional" Beauty
I love feedback - the squealing sound produced by guitars held close to amps. Feedback sounds like a rusty door, a dying cat, or a pack of whales crying in the ocean. When I share the ultimate feedback song, Smashing Pumpkins' "Drown," with a girl, she usually refers to the feedback-laden ending as "senseless noise." But in my opinion, it's a carefully orchestrated, creative way to use a sonic element of the guitar.

This kind of beauty is visceral and different - many people shy away from it before they embrace it. I'd like to connect with a girl who is moved by different beauty, whatever it may be. (And it might very well be necessary, considering my looks certainly are not "traditionally" beautiful.)

    2. She Faces Reality
People avoid reading about bad things that happen in the world, but it's important to have perspective and realize the world is good - and bad.

    3. She Doesn't Do What Everyone Else Does
The media embraces certain things, and many people follow. But, to most guys, followers are boring, and independent thinkers are sexy.

Set trends on your own and buck established ones. It boils down to individuality and bravery - the originality and strength to break the mold and depart from the crowd.

    4. She's Tuned in to the World
A few weeks ago, I read about a disease wiping out entire colonies of bats along the East Coast. The article confirmed my worst fears: As the bats disappear, the insect populations they feed on will explode. When I relay this story to most women I meet they say, "Why should I care?"

There seems to be a dearth of people who have a passion about the world. It's important to learn about places, people, historical events, facts, stories. If you can tell me something interesting that I didn't know already (which is a lot), you're set. If you only care about MTV, partying, and the latest fad, you're one-dimensional.

    5. She Can Tell a Good Story
Storytelling is a gift that requires a sense of timing and an understanding of an audience. A good storyteller is intriguing but hard to find.

    6. She Can Talk About "Boy Stuff"
Sometimes, I spout off "boy stuff" (read: sports) and unfairly expect a girl to keep up, but I do talk about my fair share of "girl stuff" - cooking, fashion, hair - to deserve a few conversations about serial killers and horror movies.

What makes a guy enlightening to you? And what frustrates you about the boring guys you meet? Do you think I'm being too picky or setting my standards too high?

I think that if this is your list of what you are seeking in a woman, you should have posted it on your Matchcom profile, instead of on here! Unfortunately, each individual has their own specifications when it comes to their "perfect mate." Don't generalize this as a list for wants from "every" man, because its not. There are men out there who desire the polar opposites of your specifications.

Your advice should be to not settle for less than what you desire, but be open to types you've not experienced before. Yahoo is not a dating site, so don't treat it that way. Give yourself some depth, because the last few articles I've read of yours have seem to be sub-conscious bashes at the female species.

      Dear Ashley:

Best of luck to you. I am not ashamed to state that my throat tightened and manhood shrunk a bit while just reading your formidable list of requirements in a man. You should be able to find one that meets all your prerequisites every night. In your dreams.

Why didn't I meet you when I was younger??? JK I've always thought like a man, like to discuss politics, love baseball, I know about all sports and I'm very different from most women. I've never gotten my nails done! Only problem I'm not a good storyteller. I really need to work on that. My husband finds it easy to get along with me because I can be alone and I don't talk incessantly like some women. I will leave him alone when it needs it.

Personally, I find that men view me as one of the guys too often. I'm not a fan of conventional beauty, in fact I think make-up everyday is a sign of self-hatred(you shouldn't have to be pretty to find Mr. Right), I'm not very materialistic, I almost never go to the mall, and I talk about horror movies, philosophy, and distasteful jokes, but I've never had a boyfriend (which is fine for now). Yet every slutty, self-absorbed, dumber-than-a-brick girl I know has guys lining up to date her.

Basically: If you want depth from a girl, start looking at the wallflowers. They might not fit societal definitions of beauty and might not be outgoing, but if you make an effort to get to know her, she'll definately love you back.

Personally, I don't think you are being picky or have high standards. I think most of what you are looking for in a partner is very reasonable. That being said, it might be because I am very cut throat when it comes to dating and refuse to settle.

      Things that turn me on:
A guy that knows his authors and literature.
      Non conventional beauty.
A person who understands that institutions are silly.
Someone who can laugh at himself.
A person who embraces feminism - but won't think I'm a hypocrite because I wear make up and shave my legs.
Someone who takes care of himself and doesn't need a mom for a girlfriend.
      A strong personality.

      Things that are a turn-off:
      A pushover.
A person who ONLY reads ESPN.com
      A couch potato
A person who is okay with mediocrity.
A person who doesn't want to travel, lets say India, because it isn't a western country (yes, I dated a guy that said this).
      A person who is cheap.
A person who cries more than I do.
A person who is scared to argue.

Okay that is it. I am bored with this now.

wow. "boy stuff" means sports and "girl stuff" means fashion and cooking?
    • me  •  2 years 0 months ago
One thing I've never understood is this idea that movies and TV give, that women want a sensitive guy. I don't want a man who cries at movies. Something serious? Sure. Being empathetic and decent is what I like. And a man who is good with kids is so amazing to me. It's important to distinguish things you like in a person and things necessary for a lasting relationship. My husband and I don't have a whole lot in common recreation-wise, but we have the same values and faith and that makes ALL the difference in the world.

I'm sorry, but to me you just come off as a pompous prick. A woman has to care about dying flying rats to get your attention??? I understand that she should be able to listen to your "boy stuff" since you saying your willing to divulge in girly convo, but really if someone has no interest in foreign issue that doesn't make them a dimwit. Reality for most people (unless your an international ambassador) does not involve 3rd world countries, so to me your ideas of what's sexy is just odd & hypocritical.

"What makes a guy enlightening to you? And what frustrates you about the boring guys you meet? Do you think I'm being too picky or setting my standards too high?"

The first two questions are variations of the same. The answer is passion, or lack there of. And not romantic passion, not anything steamy. Passion for life. Passion for being a part of the world.

I was literally just on a maybe-date with this guy, who really is wonderful, but lacks passion. He's about to commit to a full-time volunteer position for a year working with the homeless, which is definitly not boring, and looks a lot like passion, but he follows it by saying how he's just bored with life and wants to go out tonight and get blackout drunk so he's not bored anymore. That's gross. What frustrates us most about boring guys is that they're bored! A guy who can find a way to not be bored, is a guy worth finding. There's too much to life to be bored.

And even more frustrating, is the fact that I had to say "maybe-date". It was so unclear whether it was a date or not that I can't even comfortably commit to calling it a date. That shouldn't happen. Women shouldn't have to read between the lines. And if we have to ask, it shouldn't even be allowed to be considered a date.

And you're not at all too picky or have your standards set to high. It's completely refreshing that a guy like you even exists. I just hope there's more of you out there!

I noticed that all of these qualities you posted have nothing to do with materialism or looks. That to me is very cool.

Check, check, check, check, check, check ... one marriage and a string of boring if not intimated men prior and following. The majority still want the "Betty Crocker take home to Mom" type for long term partnerships but now you also have to come with a fabulous (if not over flowing bust lines), great job with retirement package and 99% of the time the physical end is still coming up short ... lol! I'm I being too picky ;~)

      This article is HORRIBLE!!!
    • A Yahoo! User  •  2 years 0 months ago
I hate when a guy will only talk about sports. I understand some of them up to a point, but when they start rattling on with all the terms and plays and stats of every single player I get totally lost. I've only had a few decent sports conversations, and that was after my guy friend spent an entire football game explaining it to me. I like when a guy will take the time out to try and include you in the "guy stuff" and not just expect you to automatically understand what blitzing is.

Most of the people who commented negatively just haven't met these type of women they do exist by the way me being one. Im comfortable talking about anything once I know you well. Take for example my husband. We do just about everything together. We talk about everything. Yeah it may seem weird but we don't mind or care what other people say. The problem is, is just simply believing and you keep trying until you find one.

Why is it every story that is written about "relationships" always sounds like a bunch of crap...

      Here is the quick version.

      Real women date assholes.
Real men don't date because real women are dating assholes.
Everyone else are either still dating assholes or are assholes.

      There.

what a piece of crap article! Yahoo you call that news?

There is also a mystery virus killing Banannas.

I love to listen to BBC News late at night and on Sundays.

I cant get enough of History,Discovery,National Geo, and Crime/Medical information. Not that I will remember all of the stats, but I actually like the news, and I also had to tone down my obsession with the web site rotten.com and snopes.

Right now I am fascinated by Invecta diving watches;even though I do not dive! ARG!

I can't give Smashing Pumpkins - Drown, The Ultimate Feedback Song award, That ones remains solely with Acid Bath. The Blue which coalesces out of feedback or Dr. Seuss is Dead where the guitarist key up and tune down to feedback. as far as your article I'd say you are in the market for an intellectual, individual, yet conscientious woman. They are few and far between but they are around.
