9 attractive qualities women look for in a guy

    Getty ImagesGetty Images

My friends and I have spent many a long night brainstorming that magic formula of characteristics that drives the ladies wild. It is impossible to know just what the mixture is supposed to be, but is there one characteristic that can work alone to make a guy really attractive?

Here are the nine characteristics we've come up with:

    Sense of Humor

Everyone says how important sense of humor is, and I have learned to look for it in women. I am lucky enough to be able to make women laugh, but I'm still super single.

    Trustworthy

Trust is the holy grail of a relationship. It takes years to build it, and it is so delicate. There are few things that take so long to attain that can be destroyed so quickly. So a lot of us may finally settle on a very trustworthy person when we finally find that.

    Kindness

This seems like a no-brainer, but I've seen plenty of girls stay with guys who don't treat them well. So, I'm thinking that most women look for a nice guy, but the fact of the matter is that mean guys seem to get girlfriends too-and at a better rate than nice guys.

    Yachthttp://blog.expandexcellence.com/2006/12/12/expand-excellence-interviews-with-cream-o …Money

I admit it: I sometimes envision myself marrying rich and sitting there doing nothing. I could lie out on my wife's yacht and host lavish parties and hear about how crazy the Roaring 20's were, when my wife's friends were my age. Money is definitely high on a lot of people's list: remember when Anna Nicole Smith married that really old rich guy? I doubt it was because she thought he was hot, funny, or great in the sack.

    Super Hot

As much as we hate to admit it, the first thing we notice about someone else is how good or bad they look. But one of the first lessons we learn in the dating world is as beautiful as someone is on the outside, they could be ugly on the inside.

    Confident

Confidence is based on a lot of these characteristics. You are confident if you are talented, super hot, intelligent, or wealthy most likely. But confidence also enables you to treat people better, so you are kind and trustworthy as well. Because confidence includes so many of these other characteristic, it may just be the one major thing women look for in a man.

    Talented & Passionate

When someone possesses a special skill, such as visual art or guitar virtuosity, they get tons of girls. People like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Brady can go out with anyone they want because they are skilled. Heck, I'd go out with them. Usually skill occurs in tandem with passion, another attractive quality. When someone is really good at something, but not "hot," it makes sense that they can still attract a lot of women. It's less annoying to see someone like this in a relationship than it is to see a rich mean guy in a relationship.

    Intelligent

I am intimidated by women who are more intelligent than I am (which explains why I'm intimidated by about 97% of the female population). For a lot of people, intelligence is sexy. When someone is stupid, it's frustrating and boring, which is enough to drive someone away.

    Convenient

One can argue that convenience is a huge driver for a relationship. Does he live near you, is he "ready" to be in a relationship, does he want to have kids or not? Everything matches up correctly. Sure, he may not be the best-looking guy or have a lot of money, but it's just what you need and it's been a long, difficult search.

If we put these characteristics on a pie chart, what would get the biggest piece of the pie with you? Again, some of these characteristics occur together: intelligence and wealth, talent and passion, kindness and generosity, convenience and wealth.

How often do women care about superficial things like money? It's scary, but sometimes I fear that no matter how funny I am, if I had lots of money I could date any cute girl I wanted.

How do all of these characteristics shake out for you when choosing a boyfriend, and are there any you'd add to the list? Does confidence just take all of these characteristics into consideration?

I think this is true. Height. Girls will automatically see how tall you are and then you become a option. If they see how short you are then well.. Then hopefully you have a GREAT personality. It's true. Girls are superficial but I would think so are guys!

Wow, I'm pretty surprised at all the feedback I see here in the comments. I stumbled upon this site as a single guy who somehow can't find and attract a proper lady for the life of me. Why is that? I can't figure it out. I'm convinced that you women are all taken. Or perhaps you don't go to the bar because you think there are just scum bags there. So where do I find you? I'm 25, going to grad school, working a good job that sends me around the world (want to come with?), I've been told I'm good looking (does that matter?), I work out religiously and it shows, I'm VERY honest/ loyal/caring, family oriented, I excel at many sports, I play the guitar pretty well, i fix cars, drive stick, dress well, and just love to have fun. I'm really not vain or anything. I put a lot of effort into being an upstanding guy but it just seems to backfire. I seem to attract a lot of crazy (desperate?) women. The good girls are too busy chasing bad guys and I'm often overlooked this way. What am I doing wrong here? Am I seeing things wrong? Do I seem too perfect and might that be scaring off normal women that aren't trying to settle down? Am I a douchebag? What's the deal? Please help me, women of the internet. -Frustrated

i think that all the points listed above are very important. I'm encouraged. But as for me i also need qualities like neatness, smartness, humbleness, sexiness and all those that can not be mentiond for the seek of time.

To the authors of this article: Instead of spending many a long night brainstorming on all the possible qualities and criteria that women look for in men, why don't you try goint out into the real world and employ those same techniques. Then come back and tell all the rest of us just how succussful you were at meeting women. Here's a useful tip for you - make sure you have a wad of cash and one or two good looking guy friends along, just to increase your odds at success!!!

Led Zeppelin is not a person. Jimmy Page is a person who played guitar in the band Led Zeppelin. Van is also not the first name of Mr. Halen. Nor is Pink the first name of Mr. Floyd.

      Good article, though.

Really shocking information. These things would have never occured to me. These are pretty obvious things, I don't see why a news article was needed, but good for the author for getting it published. There is no secret formula to getting women. Those are pretty obvious factors that make a difference, but I hope most people already knew that info.

I myself go for trust, as stated it the article, it is the keystone of any successful relationship. The only other factor I would add is comfort. Why move on if you are somewhat content with the person you're with? From personal experience I have stayed with someone for the mere fact that they were already there and could stand to be around one another for a few hours here or there. The search was over and although I deserved better, I refused to go through it all again. Eventually this scenario plays out and you break up (usually). My sister has been with the same guy for 14 years. He finally proposed after seven years...there is still no date set, not even a year set. My husband on the other hand proposed after 5 months and we got married a year later. I found my prince charming.

looks are the start , how you carry yourself is next , and how you treat them and make them feel is most important , confidence comes with just being yourself not portraying someone else ,i want to say that women like a man who holds his own , respectable to all not just her .. and makes her feel appreciated and comfortable .. and definitely make them laugh ..cause whats life without smile .

Uhm Nope 3 main attraction switches that are evolutionarily HARDWIRED into women
sexual preselection:does he have many women in his life
leader of men: in his group all the men protect eachother, no matter what.
protector of loved ones: does he show that he will adequetly protect
someone that is in his immediate family, friends, and love life.

This article is kind of a nice-guy guide to keep doing what your doing and not change ur life for the better.. u dont need ot be the Most attractive male but u do need to show that u can dress well and keep well groomed, physical appearances matter very little to women and judging that a man wrote this, he doesn't know that. Women chose those people with special skills, not because of their great guitar skills, or theyre singing talents, hell a lot of people can sing and play guitar.. they are attracted to those famous people because being with them will significantly raise their quality of life and protection.. also this preselection by other women causes them to be attractive

To me, his seems like an article that a nice-guy put out.. ladies.. tell me if ur attracted to ur male best friends? well theyre attracted to you andd this is what thiss guy is doing.. i think hes just making an excuse for himself not getting laid ..you act like a rockstar, they treat you like one.

Led Zeppelin is not a person; it's a group!. See the section headed Talented and Passionate.
    • John Sabo  •  3 years 6 months ago
Jimi Hendrix is dead... so i dont think its correct to talk about him with a present tense... and Led Zeppelin is a band, not an individual. how are you a writer?
    • Robbie  •  3 years 6 months ago
Really? "Oh my God, they're SO RIGHT!" Really?

There wasn't a single sentence in this article that wasn't blindingly obvious. And of course, the incredibly obvious dating article finds its way to the "featured stories" section of the homepage.

That's it. I'm done with Yahoo.

Let me get this straight... Didn't you say that you are single? I guess we now know why.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  3 years 6 months ago
This was like reading a teenage movie script. I really hope Yahoo didn't do independent research for this.
