A Doctor's Take on Female Ejaculation

Dr. Kate is an OB/GYN at one of the largest teaching hospitals in New York City and she answers your medical questions on EMandLO.com every few weeks. To ask her your own question, click here.

    Dear Dr. Kate,

I have just recently started dating someone who ejaculates each time she has an orgasm. I've always wanted to experience it, and I think it's totally hot. However, she ejaculates such a high volume that I am now wondering if it is actually urine. Sometimes she gets really wet around the outer edge of her vagina, she will drip and things get very slick. Sometimes I see a larger discharge from that same area, which comes from the side of her vagina and is clear and has a unique viscosity. My perception is this is part of her ejaculate. Seconds later, however, she really sprays and it looks like it's coming from her urethra (I think). It kind of smells like urine too. My questions, then, are: How do I tell the difference between urine and ejaculate? If it does turn out to be urine, how do I talk to my partner about this? I don't want to make her self conscious but I'm not sure I'm down with her peeing on me each and every time.

    - All Wet

    Dear A.W.,

It can be really hard to distinguish vaginal fluid (totally normal in all women when they're aroused) from ejaculate (less common, but still normal) from urine (which happens to the best of us from time to time). The thicker, clear, mucus-like secretions (around her vaginal opening) are most likely from her vagina, and are a sign that she's really aroused (good for you, as her partner, for doing your share!). The more watery liquid that's transparent or milky is most likely ejaculate. But remember, unlike vaginal fluids which are secreted from the vagina, ejaculate emanates from the urethra, just like urine - so you can expect trace amounts of pee in ejaculate, or more if her bladder is full.

Therefore, the best way to reduce the chance of passing urine with sex or orgasm (whether female ejaculation occurs or not) is to empty the bladder right before sex. If your girlfriend regularly pees before sex-the best way to prevent bladder infections, incidentally-then it's unlikely that the spraying fluid is urine. But if she's not hitting the bathroom before bed, you can try making the suggestion to reduce the chance of accidental leakage.

Tread lightly, however-you don't want her to feel self-conscious about her body or her enjoyment.

Wow! Great information! I am a squirter and was wondering if any of that fluid was urine. I will start emptying my bladder before so there will be less fluid. This information has really helped me! Thanks for asking and answering. : D

      "ejaculate emanates from the urethra"

What organ produces the ejaculate? I know which organs create semen, but which organ creates the female ejaculate?

How do you get yourself to squirt?! I did it once and haven't done it since. Is it something that just happens or something you can teach yourself, or both?

there is a substatial amount of urine in the ejaculate. even if you release your bladder before intercourse, you will still have some urine if you squirt! ; )

Squirters are fine, but just let the guy know beforehand so in the middle of sex he doesn't suddenly say "WTF!!" If you tell him before sex, he'll be excited and do what he can to make it happen.

To REALLY "come together" is like no other experience on earth, enjoy this attribute of you're one of the women who can do this & be aware of the fact that up to 70-80% of the women are unable to do this, who cares if its slippery, that simply ADDS to the sensations which are already approaching (or have reached) overload anyway (orgasm)

I wish my wife ejaculates at such high volume thats totally delicious I love the taste and the smell of it, is there something she could do to produce more vaginal fluid or ejaculate more.

I squirt, however, I can usually only achieve that with the use of a bullet toy on my clit. The hubby likes to be inside when I use it, so that he feels everything when it is about to go off!! I have only ever been with one man that could make me squirt without a toy!!

Dumbie, I don't think that's known for sure. There's tissue surrounding the urethra that's called the urethral sponge. It develops from the same tissue that would become the prostate in men. Most likely the fluid is produced in/by the urethral sponge.
Angie, there are books (and even a video) on how to ejaculate. You can do an Amazon search. Unfortunately I'm not familiar enough to recommend a specific one.

I would think most people would be able to distinguish urine from other fluids by the smell. My ex-wife was a squirter (usually while she was on top) and it would run onto my stomach and down the sides onto the bed. Totally hot, except she was a fat, b---- and I'm glad to be rid of her. Ok, I'm done. (my new and improved wife is hotter AND much nicer)

Focus on general enjoyment and if you get a Squirt, that's great. If not, just enjoy!

lol, i learned how shortly before i started dating my fiance. he loves it! i prefer not to because a) it's super messy and b) sometimes it can be really painful with my health condition. however, there are times that he's "almost" begged me to do it. i always make sure my bladder is empty before the fun even starts so it's not an issue. when it doesn't hurt it's fun and it makes him happy. i guess he just likes being a dirty boy :P

I figured out how to do it on my own and told my boyfriend. He got really excited and wanted to see, but I haven't been able to do it in front of him :(
