Can Sex Make You More Beautiful?

Put more sex in your life: It slows aging. A Scottish study found that thrice-weekly action stripped at least four years off participants' faces, and getting busy even boosts immunity and reduces heart disease. There are beauty bonuses, too - sex perks up your appearance instantaneously. Just remember to do it safely.

WRITE OFF WRINKLES Stress hormones and antistress hormones are like a seesaw in your body, and sex - specifically orgasm - gives that seesaw a giant push in the right direction thanks to a trifecta of hormones: beta-endorphin, an opiate and painkiller; prolactin, a relaxation inducer; and oxytocin, which makes you want to cuddle. Endorphins and growth hormones flood the body after orgasm, healing damage from the sun, smoking, and cortisol, which destroy collagen and create wrinkles. In a fun few minutes, sex wipes out the inflammatory molecules that age skin.

SOFTEN SKIN Think of how you look right after sex: dewy cheeks, pink lips, and shining eyes. The bright-eyed look lasts for days, as does sex's other skin-friendly side effect: When you sweat, natural oils, like linoleic acid - a moisturizer also found in safflower and olive oil - are released, lubricating cells and hydrating skin.

LOOK ALIVE Sleep is free cosmetic medicine, and sex is an amazing sleep inducer. Those feel-good chemicals linger after orgasm, helping you fall asleep more quickly. Post-sex sleep is restorative, so you'll wake up refreshed, with reduced under-eye circles and puffiness. Adding sex to your bedtime routine can also help resolve sleep issues.

FEEL THE BURN Even without a climax, sex and kissing work wonders: heart rate and circulation increase, and blood floods your organs and skin. Deep breathing controls stress and sends oxygen throughout your system. Sex burns about as many calories as the same amount of time spent weight training or walking; even a measly smooch stimulates 30 facial muscles. You burn eight to 12 calories per minute of kissing (more than you burn in a minute of walking). That exercise improves everything from cholesterol levels to mood - without your going anywhere near a Spin class.

FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT Orgasm is key to attaining sex's benefits. If you don't have one, you release fewer good-for-you hormones. Single or celibate? Masturbate or exercise - a half hour of vigorous walking, jogging, or weight lifting triggers healing endorphins. A quick downward-dog stretch brings blood from your core to your head for that flushed, pink-cheeked look. Or go the makeup route. Blush is key, and so is moisturizer, mascara, and lip gloss. But nothing beats the real thing.

I noticed that the mornings after my husand and I had had really good sex, the next day, as I walked down the halls at work, men would look at me, which they usually didn't do.

I know I always thought a woman having sex with me looked a hell of a lot better than one who wasn't.

It's quite a paradox for men. Low testosterone contributes to decreased libido, right? Well, lack of sex also decreases testosterone levels! So the less we have the less we want it. Perhaps its to spare us from knowing what we are missing :)

Sex also increases oxytocin, which has anti-aging properties. With testosterone decreasing with age it is likely that there is a relationship here as well to wrinkles, etc.

There's only so many downward dogs you can do. Too bad it's nearly impossible to find a non-chody sex partner.

I'm living proof of this. Lovemaking was always my favorite past time. And, I indulged myself to my husband's delight. For years I never gained an ounce, had high energy, and was always mistaken for 10 yrs. younger than my true age. I was as smoking hot at 39 as I'd been at 25. And, I never liked exercise or sports. Sex was my workout. But, about 7 years ago, my husband and I started having money problems and problems with our teenage son. The frequent sexual activity all but dried up - and so did I. Now, I'm 30 lbs. heavier (without a major diet change), my energy level and self esteem have hit rock bottom, my hair turned gray fast, I'm no longer comfortable in my own skin, and people around me seem to think I'm older than I am. I don't feel like myself. But, the minute I remember how I felt then or I wake from a hot dream - I always feel like me again. And, I swear that's the only time I look in the mirror and think I look less haggard and not so old.

Thank goodness another reason to have sex

SEX does not add more beauty to someone. SEX only can make a person feel really good! It does not matter how many times you screw a person, they are going to LOOK the same in the end, maybe just messed up hair, etc; if anything SEX can make you look very messy!

That's so true. My co worker is testimony of that. One day she came in the office and I said to her you look so nice and pretty today and she told me that she and her husband were putting it on every night for the past weeks. Lol

I love this! My husband will often ask me, "how did you get so pretty?" and I always answer "by having sex all the time". My gut instinct was correct!

Part of me says "YAY another reason to have sex..."

The rest of me is laughing because all of the things they mention are also health benefits of...guess what...REDUCING STRESS. Sex, like excercise, and finding your happy place when you're upset releases tension.

I'm 32 and the other night I went out for dinner and the waitress said I need to see your id. I said thank you, she said I have to ask for id if you are under 30, I said thank you again. My hubby and I have sex of some sort everynight and have for most of the 13 years together. Both of us are mistaken for being 24-25 all the time, it really makes a difference.

No I dont believe this. I think its you yourself that makes you beautiful
    • Stacey  •  1 year 9 months ago
Oh this is so true!!!! My hubby and I go at it every chance we get and we're always getting complimented on how young we look.

I agree. Sex should be done at least three times a day, except on days where both partners have a heavy workout schedule; then it's 2 times..;)
