    Does he still want you?

photo credit: Getty Imagesphoto credit: Getty ImagesIt's something we all wonder. No matter how heated the break-up, most of us spend at least a little time thinking about our exes and wondering if somehow, some way, some day we'll get back together. Maybe it's because we needed a little time apart to put all the good stuff in perspective, or maybe it's because once we've fished the seas again, we realize that, no, there aren't really all that many prized species in there after all. In any case, wouldn't you like to know whether he's moved on or stuck on you? Here, some ways that can help you figure it out.

    1. Decode His Out-of-the-Blue E-Mail
The two of you break up, you vow never to speak again to the lout. And you don't, until your inbox pings, his name shows up, and the subject line reads, "hey." A peace offering or a sneaky way for him to weasel his way back into your life? From what he writes, it'll seem like he's just trying to be friends (a recap of how it's going, an allusion to the woman he's dating). Not so fast. If he throws in a few mini-brags about himself (something good at work, great vacation he has coming up), he may be trying to promote the notion that he wasn't so bad after all (a new gal sees something in him, right?). He may be testing the waters to see if you're game.

    2. Gauge His Emotions
You run into him at a bar, a coffee shop, a mutual friend's birthday bash. Most likely, he'll try to play it cool - pretend like he's good, you're good, everything's good. Chances are, the less he talks, the more he pines. If he's able to spend some time talking without showing extreme ranges of emotions (uh, anger) or silence, then he's probably found himself in a better place.

    3. Translate His Conversation
Guys have been practicing the art of wooing women all their lives. And they know-or at least they should know-that women don't respond all that well to pick-up lines and pretentious attitudes. Guys know that one of their most effective tactics is to ask a lot of questions. So when the two of you reconnect (via run-in, coffee date, e-mail), see if he switches back to pursuit mode: if there's lots of questions and lots of conversation, there may also be lots of hope that what attracted you to him in the first place will attract you again.

    4. Assume Yes
You may think that guys take break-ups easy-that they run out, throw down beers with the guys, and move on. But the truth is that men hold onto their feelings about their exes for a long time, probably because few of them let it out in the way women do: by talking to their friends, their mom, and their friends' moms. (Kidding!). I can tell you that one of the most common relationship questions we receive at Men's Health is from guys asking how to get their women back; they realized after a few months that they indeed let the best one, the right one, the essential one get away. And they might even be ready to admit they now know who handles break-ups better.

And if he really wants you back, then here's some required reading for him on how to be the perfect guy for you.

Why does it always have to be the guy that's made an example of? What's up with that?

If he does not blow his lunch or attack you with deadly weapons you may still have a chance with him even if you were a total B when you were dating.

To Cookie: If you think like that, you must have never loved the person...ever.

Let me ask the men a question who have commented on this subject. In my situation why would he do things to hurt me over and over and promise to change every time and then finally decide to change and propose to me and buy me an engagement ring and promise me that we would be together for the rest of our lives and then cause an argument to leave me no other reason but to make him move out and I haven't heard from him since. I still feel like he used me for this past year until it was time for him to get his driver's license back and he has to depend on his mother to buy him a car so what it boils down to he was always going to put his mother first because he needs her in order to get his inheritance when she dies so he has kiss her butt. So why tell me one thing and do another??????????????????????

gan, your a man and you say make the move. how long do you give it to when you do that? exspeical when he's tells you your never going to get back together.wait a months without trying to talk to him because talking as got me no were and my leeters back. now and hes going out all the time and he trowed up in my face about how many he was doing. that was uncalled for. but i just keep in the back of my mind that maybe just maybe hell change his mind. that he will miss me again and want to work things out. we were together 6 yrs and we did have a good relationship untill we moved close to his family. and it true you cant fight family. no matter how old you are they still nit pick untill it wears you down. and i know they are a big part. just from a guys point i would like to know. Does he miss me , think about me, you the little things. no matter who or what he's doing?

Why is it that when you start to find someone else, the "Ex" always comes back right then???

This article only counts if she isnt with someone else. The guy may want to go back, but if she is with someone else she will want nothing to do with the ex romantically.

what a great article. I have just mutual ended a 9 year relationship. and the little quirks you wrote about are all to familiar. and also it's good to know he has feelings too. Really deluded. Really.

First, don't "decode" anything. If a person isn't upfront and direct, they're not worth the time. There should be no need to decode anything.

Second, why did you break up in the first place? Why would things be any different even if he did want you back? If you need time apart, why did you break up instead?

This article really feeds into the hopes of women who cannot get over a man that really is over them. Even if he's hurting, it doesn't mean he wants you back. Don't be looking for "signs" in everything thing he does. It will only end in heartache - for you!

after having ended a 2 year tight relationship, and still having strong feelings for the other person,
the reason i have withheld from trying to get back together with her is pride most likely, not as seen by her, but as seen by my family and friends, and hers. .. it is my assumption...it can be B.S. but does anyone understand what I am saying??

Yeah just let go and find the person thats right for you. I was like this when I was young and couldn't let go. But now I realize I want someone who makes me happy as well as the other way around!!!!

maybe they can't get over it because they love them still and don't know how to work at it.
