While you were trying to make heads or tails of the bizarre Oscar
ceremony last night, China was one-upping Hollywood with something even
weirder: a mass koala wedding ceremony.
Three koala couples were joined in marsupial matrimony in Chimelong Safari Park in Guangzhou, China. One lucky Chinese koala named Jimmy was married to a mail-order bride from Australia named Killarney. After the wedding, the newlyweds shared a wedding feast of (you guessed it) eucalyptus.
It turns out animal weddings are not so uncommon. In England, one registrar told the Daily Mail
that owners would pay upwards of “$40,000 on ceremonies including
chauffeur-driven cars, nibbles and even professional photographers.” A
recent dog wedding in New York broke the Guinness Book of World Record
for the most expensive animal wedding ever at $250,000.
And it gets worse. Koalas are not monogamous—the males will try and mate with as many females as possible. So even if you spend $250,000 on a wedding for your furry friend, it could end in heartbreak.
