Male menopause - fact or fiction?

Apparently, I'm a one man focus group for three of my female friends/colleagues. I periodically get a meeting request for lunch with the subject line reading "Is the Doctor in?". They get a guys perspective on things, and I get lunch on them…not a bad deal.

So, I just got back from this lunch and I'm not sure "the doctor" had the right prescription…so I'm going to throw it out to all of you.

    The Setup:

The three ladies in question - great friends and colleagues….very smart….all attractive…fun people. One is married, one lives with her long-time boyfriend and the other is single and actively dates.

    The Topic:

Male menopause - Fact or fiction. Not just a bad day….but they've noticed a wretched mood that lasts for days.

The two attached ladies are firm believers that it exists…the single one is on the fence, but has seen shades of it in guys she's dated. All have noticed that their beaus have displayed moodiness on a semi-cyclical basis and want to know why….is it a hormonal thing? Is it a tidal thing? A full moon?

I'm not buying it and I've got a theory….so I start asking questions to rule things out…..I ask about jobs, finances, family….even how their favorite sports teams are doing. Nothing out of the ordinary seems to arise from the responses, so I rule these out. Which gets to my theory…..it's sex related.

Never want to know details (because I know the husband and bf and they are very cool guys - don't want to get them in trouble), but I ask - how's the sex life in general? Both of the attached ladies say good….frequency isn't an issue (because I know I get cranky if I haven't gotten any in awhile) and they tend to "mix it up". Not what I expected to hear, so I asked whether BJ's were "in that mix"? Single girl said it's always in the mix, one of the attached said yes, but it's been awhile, and the third said not really, but they had sex very regularly.

I latched onto the last answer - even though sex was a regular occurrence, infrequent BJ's are something that can frustrate a guy….hell, most guys I know. Can't explain why….just is. She accepted the advice and stated she'll test the theory (and that guy owes me a beer).

BUT - it doesn't help the other two much and I'm at a bit of loss. So I'm asking you people…any thoughts on whether male menopause exists and what could cause it?
