    Meryl Streep's Relationships Wisdom

    by Ariane Marder, Glamour
Meryl Streep is a gifted actress, stunning at 63 and wise to boot. What more could you ask for? How about some sage insight on one of life's stickier subjects: love and relationships. Yes, please!

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph newspaper, the multi-Oscar Winner broke it down, saying that when it comes to relationships, women commit way more time and energy into making it work than men.

She succinctly put it this way: "Women have their antennae up more. It is all self-preservation, they want the relationship to work." She goes on to say, ''Women make a religion of relationships. They study how to make them work, while men do not, as a generalization.''

I couldn't agree more. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I've spent hours helping a girlfriend craft the perfect text message--worded exactly right so it doesn't appear bitchy or needy (maybe it's a writer thing?) Then, when--and if--he texts back, we take apart every turn of phrase and desperately try (and most often fail) to read between the lines. There's just no way that guys spend as much time obsessing over every single word. They say what they mean, and tend to take it all in stride. What is it with us (or me)?

If I didn't spend the amount of energy and head space that I do on relationships--both real and faux--I might be able to cook like Julia Child or even play guitar like Jack White (though probably not). But, in the end, relationships are important to me. If I love someone, I do everything I can to see it succeed.

Do you think Meryl Streep is onto something? Do you think you invest more time and energy into relationships than men do? Can you think of any examples?
