Rentafriend is a poorly done website with a dream: rent out "friends" for $10 an hour. Maybe it's more companionship than friendship, but it's paid-for company and it's friendly.
Not that friendly though. Rentafriend insists it's not a dating site or escort service. In fact, anyone caught seeking more is removed from the site. Despite its scrupulous ethics, this Japanese-born idea may not take flight in the US and UK. A writer at the Guardian rented his very own friend for an afternoon. Only he quickly learned the 27-year-old actor was a paid-friend virgin. It's hardly surprising, though, when you consider this discrepancy: 200,000 people are signed up to be rental friends, while only 2,000 are registered friend seekers.
Could anything be more awkward? At least if you pay for sex, you don't have to figure out what you're going to do!
