Secrets to a Great Online Dating Photo

Exploring the new trend of the self-photograph and advancements in tech, a New York Times article shared the findings of online dating site, OK Cupid. It seems photos that get the most action (and therefore the larger dating pool) have one thing in common: a smile.

While it seems obvious that a smiling face might draw in more potential mates, the other characteristics of profile pics were interesting in that "of course, that makes perfect sense, even though I've never thought about it" kind of way.

A Prescription for Hotter Sex (That's Not Viagra)?

Women responded more often to pictures in which the man is looking off camera, not into it. Men were more likely to respond to pictures in which the woman is at home (and looking a little come-hither) rather than out with friends or on a trip. But for both sexes, pictures in which the subjects are smiling uniformly trounced the stone-faced ones.

Perhaps a straightforward stare from a man could be perceived as aggressive and a woman surrounded by friends and/or on a great adventure could seem fulfilled -- therefore negating the need for a mate. On a very primal level, it makes sense.

Also -- fun fact, those who look like they took the photo themselves get more winks.

Luckily technology is catching up to this online trend and you no longer have to hire a professional photographer to get a great shot. Your iPhone or laptop camera can help you take control of the image you put out there to perfect strangers.

I might even argue you're more relaxed and comfortable when taking your own picture. Therefore creating an image that is more authentically you. Which is always appealing -- online, or off.

I disagree with the statement "you no longer have to hire a professional photographer to get a great shot" -- there is a HUGE difference between pro photos and selfies. Maybe it's not NECESSARY but it's worth considering the investment when you consider the consequences here --- accurately but flatteringly portraying yourself for a potential mate!

A nice smile, wear clothes which are flattering to your body.
It's a good idea to have more than one photo (one semi dressed up/casual and the other dressed down (swimsuit, top/shorts, fitted jogging clothes...etc)

AVOID family/friends photos,(odds are one them will be considered more attractive than you)LOL! Avoid photos taken in a bathroom (especially in front of a mirror with a cell phone!, photos that clearly show you're out on a date (someone's shoulder or a hand is in the shot especially if there is a wedding ring/engagement ring),Aerial headshots where the camera is aimed down with you looking up towards the celing.
It comes off as though you're trying to hide your body undereneath your head, avoid photos taken from too far away from the camera, no photos taken in a junky room, NO GOOFY FACE shots (what's cute to you may not be seen as cute to others), No glamour shots, no hands on the hips, pointing fingers, or photos which ONLY contain feet, hands, lips, or eyes.

First of all post a full body photo that has been taken recently, don't just post your face and head. People need to see if you are fat or skinny or in shape. Nothing worse than agreeing to meet someone and finding out they are fat or out of shape. Second do not post pictures of you with friends or or former partners.
